Marathon Minor Bumps

Of course, after last year's debacle, anything was bound to be an improvement. Only 61 people hospitalized and at last report, no one dead. Tribune has full coverage. Other media links on the right.

Anyone have nice, decent stories about the Department coverage?

The response from the aid station personnel for ailing runners was tremendous. However, getting an ambulance on site for transport was a definite issue.

IT WAS NICE THAT ONLY 9161 AND 9171 GOT TO SIGN UP FOR THIS OT. THE UNION IS ADVISING 9165 OR WHATEVER FTO'S ARE TO FILE A GRIEVANCE. DETECTIVES SHOULD NOT I REPEAT NOT BE ALLOWED TO SIGN FOR ANY OT DETAILS (CHA, CTA, AIRPORTS, SPECIAL EVENTS ETC ETC) WHY? YOU ASK....THEY ALREADY MAKE D2A PAY PLUS UNLIMITED OVERTIME ----SO BACK OFF YOU GREEDY BASTARDS

I worked the marathon yesterday and I wanted to pass along a message; actually several messages; that I received while there.
THANK YOU OFFICER.
So many people expressed their gratitude that I stopped counting after about 20 thank yous.
Some thanked us for being at the marathon but most specifically thanked us for all that we do.

Since I worked the marathon I had to miss Mike's welcome home party. So now I have another message for him.
WELCOME HOME MIKE! GIVE EM' HELL!

Make Detective a career service rank and I'll be more than happy not sign up for OT with most of you idiots. But as long as Detectives are "Police Officer as Detective" with no change in seniority, I'll be grieving...and I'll win. Now please tell me again about your big one-bagger case you copped using your new binoculars..

This is true! WTF and watch the d-3 guys from daleys detail and burkes detail work all the overtime! What a waste hey boss this should be only for patrolmen as we do not need d-3 security specialists (LOL), or detectives to do these duties! Why not allow the workers d-1 to get overtime whenever we want by helping destectives do nothing like they do! Why not put all detectives in uniforms? this would really curtail the do nothings hiding out!

Too many of the runners finish the race; obviously it’s become too easy. The race should be changed to the first week in August, start at 2pm and run through various neighborhoods in 011, 015 and 025

Everyone who is not "9161" DOES NOT make earn overtime like the detectives. I'm 9174 and was not granted the opportunity to work the marathon. As a matter of fact, 9174 never gets overtime.

This was my 4th detail to the Chicago Marathon.

The 1st runner down (that got CPD assistance) was just shy of the 2 hour mark. The PO said he was down, pale and lips turning blue. Several pleas for an ambulance (squad, tell em to step it up - he is not looking good - 3 or 4 times) and the PO got on the air approximately 10 minutes later to say he had been taken to Masonic. Had this been on the West Side, they would've been rioting because of the lack of medical response.

This became the norm. PO's on the air pleading for EMS to step it up, whilst sometimes giving updates (squad, he's stopped breathing, where's EMS??).

The med teams on bikes finally were around enforce about 3 hours into the race, and they were helpful - but initially none were to be found.

The aid stations also were well stocked & prepared.

A small child attacked by a pit bull on the sidelines. THAT sounded like a nightmare on the air.

Despite the departments 139 page order there were alot of gaping holes. We were given NO information. Not even a 1 page handout, maybe to depict the race route, or where the aid stations were posted.

The dispatcher did a tremendous job, she must be voiceless today, repeatedly giving the same information over & over because no one listens to their radios...

Was it like last year? No. It was better. But - the lack of planning experience was glaring.

I mean IT IS A MARATHON YOU FUCKING IDIOTS! Thats right ... all along the route were CPD POs smoking as if it was their right to do so! I believe there is a GO against this, so why werent any white shirts enforcing this? I even at one point during a water break saw a free lance camera man zooming in on a PO taking a drag with a large group of runners behind him! I told the camera man I was a PO and these clowns were an embarrassment and I informed him how to call IPRA and beef... he asked what he needed and after a brief conversation he was getting a closeup of this clowns name plate! So maybe a few lessons will be taken from this... Know that smoking is not your god given right, and if you chose to look like a moron in doing so, be warned that you are violating GO and if you get caught you have no one to blame but yourself! But a handful of POs were doing a nice job so thank you!

As a supervisor, the eleven people assigned to my squad did an excellent job all day. The runners were appreciative and we received Thanks from several people.

On the downside...who ever owns/rented white metal barriers that were so very needed, came along before our post was opened and runners/walkers still in the street and just removed them. They left huge intersection with turning vehicles wide open. Streets and san right behind them and attempted to take cones and horses left until we stopped them.

All in all good day, no one hurt and nice overtime.

You know what? I work in a D-Unit--no clout, no nothing. Just got there. You think we get all this OT? Well, when we are going to go out and make arrests, they adjust our hours, so that we DON't get OT. And if we do, it might be an hour, not even an extra 15 minutes. And it's no ducking, either. Not that I mind...these sure ain't the good old days...you gotta roll with the punches.

Still way ahead....and know conditions are worse in patrol--knowing that might make you feel a little bit better.

And by the way, how much more does D2 end up being in relation to 9161? A mere pittance.

To the 1 post, Jody was at the marathon monitoring the police/fire related events. Boo-hoo, he couldn't watch you man play soccor, what a shame... Get your head out of your ass. The marathon was a huge deal. The whole day they were working on something with police and fire helicopters and video streaming from them. I feel this was much more important than non American football any day.

On a side note, he was walking around near the end of the day and shook many of our hands telling us we all did a great job. Quite a suprise for this blueshirt.

Whomever the F/1 female dispatcher was early, she was the best. Had to keep repeating the same shit to all the PO'S that probably worked inside. Everyone was told unlessed someone about to die, stay off the radio. Fools kept calling for an ambulance if someone was throwing up. I had about 3 people throwing up and went over and talked with them. This was around mile 25. All 3 said they were near the end and would walk to finish. PO'S talking on radio biggest problem. Great crowd saying "Thanks Officers for being out there" that's what I heard for the most part.

It is a shame that most P.O.s will not begin CPR and would rather stand around and wait for EMS. And shame on the Dept. for not regularly certifying officers in CPR. Too often we are the first responders. I hope people in my unit know CPR if I ever fall out instead of waiting for a paramedic.

My Suburban PO hubby ran the marathon and we walked and took the EL all over the city to cheer him on in certain areas.

I have a couple of comments about the Police Officers that were working the Marathon.

First, I want to talk about the female PO detailed right under the bridge at ChinaTown, near the EL. Do you know her? If so, tell her thank you.
If I had to do that job for 5 mins I would have to shoot people. (this is why I could never be a cop, I have no idea how you all posses such tolerence for the morons of this city)

People really lets call them what they are -dumbasses just walking in the road, pushing their strollers into the off ramp of the expressway, lolly gagging and walking through the Ickys. It was quite entertaining. No one was listening to her pleas for them to get off the road.I felt bad for her. I didn't get to say thank you to her. But she deserves a pat on the back for putting up with that shit.

The other Officers we came across were all very nice, professional, friendly and as usual a class act. Thank you CPD!! I was talking to some Officer in the River North area when some guy came up and started telling him how to do his job. Like giving him stupid suggestions that made zero sense.

I will just say this again, I could never do your job!! How do you put up with these idiots?

Also, congrats to the CPD runners, we saw many of them and would cheer them on along the way when they would pass us.

There is nothing - nothing worse than a tout.

Someone please print the names of CPD runners. I'm sure we can work thru a process of elimination.

With this new "pilot" program of no OT slips needed on a detail where such a large amount of people were assigned, better watch your check closely. Guarantee you won't be credited for the real hours that you worked because everyone was being dismissed at different times and you won't be credited for the lunch you didn't get either. You will be credited for 8 hours only!

I can see a lot of people filing grievances on this one !
