TASER Tragedy Fallout

  • The man was naked, teetering on a building ledge and jabbing at police with an 8-foot-long fluorescent light bulb as a crowd gathered below.

Lt. Michael Pigott responded by ordering an officer to fire a stun gun at the man, who froze and plunged headfirst to his death in a scene captured on amateur video and replayed frequently on the Internet.

The officer was remorseful and distraught. He apologized and sought the family's forgiveness. Then he went to his unit's headquarters Thursday morning, his 46th birthday, and fatally shot himself just hours before the family laid the victim to rest.

A horrible outcome to what was pretty much a no-win situation. If the subject fell before police took action, cops would be blamed. If the police backed off and the subject hurt himself or others, cops would be blamed. If the cops put hands on the subject and anyone got hurt, cops would be blamed. Beanbags, TASERs, OC, any of the supposedly "less-that-lethal" options don't really work when a subject is 10 feet in the air waving broken glass around. And waiting him out isn't a realistic option when dealing with an emotionally disturbed person.

But pushing the Lieutenant over the edge by stripping him of police power and looking into criminal charges for what was essentially him looking out for his guys and possibly failing to appreciate the damage a fall could do is a failure of the disciplinary system. Obviously, the subject didn't deserve to die. But the Lieutenant didn't deserve to feel he had only one way out of a single questionable judgment call.

What a sad story.. My prayers to the officer and to the LT.

It's hard enough dealing with the evils of mankind day in and day out.. but this police administration is Satan himself. It's a damned if you do.. damned if you don't situation.. Whatever the outcome, you will have to live with the consequences.

I personally know how this department fucks over good POs. I asked for help in a situation and this department basically slapped me in the face. I use to bring in multiple heads a day, parkers, movers, ANOVs, anything and everything, and after taking it up the ass from this department I'm now signing off with a big "FUCK YOU".

WE ARE ALL HUMAN, START TREATING US LIKE ONE!

"You have a guy who made a mistake where there's no allegation of malice or ill will," he said. "And what happened after he made a mistake? He was named in the paper, shamed in the paper, suspended, and there was a strong story line that he could be criminal suspect."

This is so heartbreaking, life/death decisions that only on pure hindsight, officers are put to immediate public trial/judgement...i pray for the beautiful soul of this officer and for his family, for all officers in these trying times.

Again, NO leadership backing the street officer, only expensive hired ball-less 'managers' finding heads for the guillotine...WHAT A BLOODY YEAR FOR THE POLICE, may God have mercy on all those who wish/seek ill will for our BROTHERHOOD OF BLUE.

We don't even have any less than lethal alternatives here for the bulk of patrol officers. I have racked up numerous IOD's in the past years fighting with various scum who don't want to be arrested.

It is getting very old, I have written report after report asking for or suggesting ways of equipping officers to deal with assailants so they don't have to go to the emergency room.

Nothing so far. In years of talking to bosses, writing reports, sending reports through channels the response from the Chicago Police Department has been the same.

Nothing.

I wrote several reports asking for leg irons on wagons after helping a tact officer subdue a screaming 17 year old girl who ignored all verbal commands and kicked the tact officer in the teeth. The response from my District Commander: leg shackles were kept in the station lockup, if I wanted them I could go to the station and sign out a pair when needed. Lots of good that does when one is in a fight.

Then the department was embarrassed by a couple of highly publicized escapes from squadrols and all of the top boss's attempts to hang the blame on the wagon officers failed.

Overnight we had leg shackles on the wagons and lard ass jerkoff inspectors trying to catch wagon men with prisoners inside their wagons without leg shackles. Typical CPD knee jerk reaction.

That was a few years ago and I see few wagon men putting leg shackles on their prisoners in spite of leg shackles now being readily available. After another escape or a tragedy we will go back to good for shit Big Bird stopping wagons and inspecting prisoners inside for shackles.

We have no tasers and nothing other than OC spray and batons and the gun. I am now well into my 50's and have accumulated 4 IOD's this year from wrestling with people only to watch them skate in court.

No more. No fucking more.

We in patrol can't even get tasers and many Sgt's refuse to take them out in spite of standing orders to do so. No matter, they are only around to give you a hard time, never to help.

Jody Weis is a fucking no-good liar mother fucker and has done none of what he promised PO's during his horseshit meetings.

I will make arrests only if overwhelming numbers of PO's are present and I will write traffic tickets only if associated with a traffic accident. I make no traffic stops and no self initiated arrests. The pay is the same and I am tired of waiting for any change for the better to ever come to the CPD.

The very next change for the better on this department for me will be me leaving it. Until that day they get jack shit out of me.

It's not mitigation to say they weren't taking their medication---which sounds like it was the naked guy's situation here. I think their decision to not take the medication they're prescribed for their issues, makes them even more culpable. Take your meds. RIP, Lt., you didn't deserve this.

Off Topic:

SSC- When and if you get a chance, can you post a link to, or even reprint, the judge's ruling in the Mike Mette case. I'm specifically referring to the passage I recall reading where the judge acknowledged that Mette had walked away and that he'd been struck several times before responding. The debate about this case is getting new life, and it would help, I think, if people's memories were accurately refreshed about the facts of the case that were before the prosecutor and judge. Given that information, the remarkably inappropriate behavior of the prosecutor and the judge should be made quite clear.

Thanks...

Each and every politician, attorney, judge and especially all NYPD law enforcement involved in causing this Lt.'s death should first be shot with a ball of their own shit and then hung, leaving their stinking shithead corpse to be eaten and shit out by the rats they deserve to die with.

And, a big FUCK YOU to the worthless scumbag shithead who caused all this shit in the first place... rot in hell you worthless pscycho fuck!

This could happen to any of US out here!

There is no telling what scenario we will encounter next.

I had to taze a guy for the CFD who was 6'2 250lbs bleeding profusely from a stab wound that the Chief on the scen deemed could be fatal.

I wasn't ordered but I felt it necessary as did the other 20 fireman and P.O's there as this guys was wrecking the whole house in his underwear and hopped up on something!

Dude fell into the dining room set took out eveything and not off a bridge but it was NECESSARY for his own welfare.

Could he have died? Yes! Would the departmetn have turned on me if there was a wrongful death? Probably....but the action was essential to the guys well being and safety of those there.

He wasn't a criminal (at the time) just a guy in dire need of medical attention and too "far gone" to know better!

SGT. (that was called to the scene having a taser)

SCC, I can only wonder why you would place this post in here.
I thought this was supposed to be a post offering condolences to the NYPD Lt. For the record, no one has said a word of complaint about the mental female who killed PO Francis, except for the woman's family members, no one to my knowledge has said one negative word in the print of video media concerning the fact that she was shot at least 5 times. Doubtful if anyone will, again, OTHER THAN HER FAMILY, who obviously did nothing to seriously offer assistance to this troubled woman.
There's enough race baiting in the media, SCC, without you adding to it.
Sadly, the Lt. made a poor decision in dealing with the edlerly mental on the ledge.
The NYPD only compounded this
by releasing to the media that
they had stripped the Lt. who
made the decision to have that
mental tased to be "stripped of
his gun and badge." They treated
him like a criminal, when they had
no proof of any criminal intent on his part. Imagine, a 21 year career gone in a moment, and publicly shamed by an institution that you held dear. While one would hope that most of us wouldn't resort to suicide, clearly this man was troubled
not only by his decision, but by the NYPD's decision as well.
May God have mercy on the elderly man who fell to his death, as well as the Lt. who couldn't cope with the results of what occurred that day. Let's hope all Police Depts. learned from NYPDs unnecessarily hasty and public condemnation of one of their own.

Blame it on the IAB RAT SQUAD. Mike Pigott was a highly decorated MOS who was assigned to the elite Emergency Service Unit (ESU).

Fourteen of the 23 MOS killed on 9/11 were assigned to ESU. Mike was well regarded by all and before ESU, served as a sgt. in the 73rd Pct. (Brownsville). The 7-3 is as bloody as it gets in the NYPD.

A sad story. Whatever they did probably would have had the same outcome. We have to make decisions in seconds that effect us for the rest of our lives. Then we are hung out to dry. The problem is those who judge these decisions, most times never were in a similar situation. If nothing else, I have learned to never judge anyones actions on this job. Unless it is you in the position, you have no idea what you would do. You can say you would do this or that, but when it is an actual situation you are in, you cannot and should not judge anyones actions. They did what was necessary and it is sad to see the outcome was so wrong for them.

They used non lethal methods. Too bad we don't have those as has been previously posted. One night years ago we had some idiot trying to kick out the back window and no wagons up. Thankfully one of the guys on the scene had a great idea. He took his pants belt off, hog tied the idiots ankles pulled the belt and closed the back door on the belt so stupid couldn't kick anymore. The Chicago Police Department, where you have to use anything you have to keep yourself safe. Sure as hell the department don't give a crap. So what it comes down to is wrestle and fight with the idiots, because unless you can shoot them, all you have is your fists. We have one of the largest city departments and as far as equipment we should have, hell we are lucky to have a spare tire that is not flat. But we have pod cameras. At the funeral today you looked at all the squad cars from the suburban and county agencies. They have all type of weapons and equipment available to them that you could imagine in their vehicles and trunks. But make sure the equipment in our trunk is there. The spare tire, and hopefully a lug wrench and jack.

You ignorant rat cocksucker! Do your homework before you condemn Lt. Michael Pigott.

The naked psycho, Iman Morales, age 37, was jabbing at one of Lt. Pigott's men with a fragile 8-foot
mercury flourescent light tube. It would not be the first time that a member of the NYPD was murdered in the line of duty by jagged glass, not to mention the toxic mercury.

I've been in contact with several members of the NYPD. Held in the highest regard by the troops, Pigott spent 21 years serving with distinction in the NYPD's most dangerous assignments.

The Pigott family, backed by the NYPD rank-and-file, have asked that P.C. Raymond Kelly and Assistant Chief Charles Kammerderner NOT attend Lt. Pigott's Monday funeral.

Under Kelly, IAD and Kammerderner tormented this good man after he gave the taser order to protect a fellow officer. Pigott's blood is on their hands just as much if Kelly and Kammerderner pulled the trigger. After the lieutenant's death, Kelly abruptly changed his tune after stripping Mike of his weapon and shield. Kelly now offers his "sincere condolences" to the Pigott family.
Murder by the brass!

GOOGLE CFL LIGHTBULBS, THEY ARE POTENTIAL HAZ MATS: made in China, legislation is being presented that in the near future, CFL lighting will be the only mandated lighting option available. VERY REAL THREAT TO US CONSIDERING ALL ENCLOSED BLDGS I.E. SCHOOLS, ETC!

How should I clean up a broken fluorescent bulb?
Because CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal
guidelines:
1. Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room
 Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.
 Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
 Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.
2. Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces
 Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with
metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
 Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass pieces and powder.
 Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.
 Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.
3. Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug:
 Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a
sealed plastic bag.
 Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
 If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
 Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic
bag.
4. Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding, etc.:
 If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside
the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or
bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage.
 You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken
CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not
come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
 If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off
with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for
disposal.
5. Disposal of Clean-up Materials
 Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash
pickup.
 Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.
 Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not
allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a
local recycling center.
6. Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming
 The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a
window before vacuuming.
 Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after
vacuuming is completed.

Take your doctrinaire bullshit and shove it up your ass! You neglect to consider the possibility of fatal injuries to the ESU officer on the fire escape above the psychotic Morales.

Who are you to criticize Lt. Pigott's split second decision? He may well have saved one of his men from possible serious injury, even death from the long fluorescent glass tube wielded by an emotionally disturbed person (EDP)?

Another fallen member of the NYPD was murdered by glass shards.

Suck on razor wire until you bleed out or shut the fuck up, jagoff.

NYPD:

Please keep us posted if Raymond Kelly and/or Charles Kammerderner appear at Mike Pigott's funeral tomorrow.

I understand that the Pigott family have indicated that neither hypocrite is welcome.

Before anyone dares to criticize Lt. Michael Pigott's actions, they should check out the murder of Officer Vincent Guidice in the Bronx on May 22, 1996. It occurred during a domestic disturbance in the 50th Pct.

Mike and Vinnie, rest in peace.

"May God have mercy on the elderly man who fell to his death, as well as the Lt. who couldn't cope with the results of what occurred that day. Let's hope all Police Depts. learned from NYPDs unnecessarily hasty and public condemnation of one of their own.

The nut case was 37.

Maybe that's elderly in your part of town.

It appears to be in every dept. The brass wont back you. Here is a perfect example! No one did anything wrong and tradegy strikes all, and gets worse when the brass steps in to make a bad situation worse.
