Also we were posted where the suburb cops were gathered. I have to say that of the few I met and talked to, they were a class act. These guys were also armed a shitload more than us and had ammo to last a week. They put up with much of the same political and clout bullshit as us, and it was nice seeing the strong show of force.

I read a story on the ABC news webpage and the last line said " a Spokesman from the FIRE DEPARTMENT reported no problems" during the rally. Whew! We all know the Fire Department has their finger on the pulse of the city, and if a spokesman said "no problems" then I was a fool to stay home, away from the "celebration" when I could have joined in the peaceful love fest! Now don't go shattering my image of peace, love and understanding by letting those cynical racist Polices say anything different happened last night. If anything had happened, and I know it didn't because 2 reliable sources, the FIRE Department and the MEDIA say it didn't, the news media would have thoroughly covered it, with the same fair mindedness and interest in the common welfare that they have shown to the world during the campaign. So there!
The media will say that white people are racist but the crowd was 20-1 white to black. And the media only panned in on the few blacks at the rally to give the illusion the crowd was mostly Afro American....nice job media.

Last night was a little taste of what it was like when we had a lot more coppers on the street. Everywhere I turned there was a squad car. Man it felt good to see the many cars responding to the calls. For you young guys, that was what it was like before the city decided that we (and the citizens we are supposed to protect) don't count for much. But as usual and in no change in my 24 years, the street police got it done. It could have been much worse, but I think we would have handled it.

Why Chicago Is Not Burning Today…
Chicago, IL—Barack Obama and Richard M. Daley gambled with the lives of Chicagoans by inviting an unprecedented one million people to celebrate at an event where only 60,000 could be accomadated.
Thankfully less than a quarter of the invitees actually showed up for the event. It became a much smaller and manageable crowd for the men and women of the Chicago Police Department to handle. It was simple mathematics of a substantially less overwhelmed police department and luck aided by a very speedy vote count with the results that pleased the attendees that ruled the night.
There were however a substantial number of reports of gunshots having been fired; one police car I know about had its windows shot out. The classy Drake Hotel on Michigan Avenue also had some windows shot out.
Still my hat goes off to the greatest law enforcement agency anywhere for their courage and efforts Last night.
A great job by CPD and our suburban brothers last night, you shined through with professionalism!

The 30 and 20 sector of 008 and LeClaire Crts had it's New Years Eve moments, but for the most part, it was pretty tame, from about 2230 to 0030 it blew upa bit with shots fired and some rowdy crowds, but they passed out early last night I guess...easy money for the RDO people.

Here is Chicago's dirty little secret. In the 015 District last nite immediately after the election results, SHOTS FIRED EVERYWHERE! Everybody poured out of their houses like it was a 10-1. Complete rioting for 2+ hours. A car flipped over at 200 N Central, reports of more at Lawler/Division, street signs tore down, traffic signals tore down, city light poles tore down, any signage tore down, and every bottle and bricks that can be found were thrown at the police. Dispatchers were freaking but got out the officers calling for help. We were issued mini fire extinquishers of OC spray and they were used! Anytime through out the night when you drove by you heard somthing like this: "Obama" "Its our country now" "take off the white hoodie" "America is black now" "Now we run it" "You work for me now" over and over again, it was quite comical. Lots of property destroyed. Everybody had thier helmets on and gas masks with OC in one hand and a baton in the other. The early cars handed over their cars to midnights like it was a nascar race. You jumped out grabbed your shit and they jumped in and sped away. We taped most windows early on. Most cars were 3 or 4 deep. A lot of help from the outside units. Gas teams called to every major intersection. All in all it was chaos but we stuck together and moved together from corner to corner. It was impossible to take anybody into custody because the bricks and bottles came out of nowhere, as usual. Lots of police vehicles damaged either windows or dents. Young guys wanted some action and they got it. Be safe.

All I want to say is a the 007th distrcit Commander was one top notch guy. HE came over to the staging area over in 007 and personally came up to almost every officer on scene and thanked them. Also bs'd with most of the guys on scene over there for 30-45min. The guy was very appreciative.
I have had dealings in 007 and evrytime S$%^ hits the fan over there he is one of the first guys on the scene with his feet on the ground. He also understands the amount of BS in 007 and is very very rarely calling on cars to "clear the corners" and "move these people out" and "lock these people up for BS" like you here so many bosses in these s$%^head distrcts doing when they ride around thinking they are the police. Uh, boss the corners are like this everday and they are gonna stay that way whether you move them for 5min or not. Great that he understands that.
Don't really know him or where he's been or how he's made it through the ranks, but from the way he has treated myslef and my collegues he's top notch in my book. Hopefully the guysand gals in 007 get the same treatment from him. As someone who is extremely interested in the future of the Chicago Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial, let me state for record that very few politicians in this City care about veterans. You mentioned Ald. Balcer? The only time he sees fit to come out to a funeral of a servicemen is when the soldier is from Bridgeport or the immediate area near his office.
Trust me, as one who attends MANY military funerals of KIAs throughout Chicago and Chicagoland suburbs, very few politicians give their time to our fallen. Trust me, I know who has and has not?
Now I ve been called a "war mongering asshat" on SCC more than I can count. We, as military veterans, pray for peace, because we are the ones who have to bear the price of war. That being said, I will fight to my death to uphold liberty and prevent Militant Islam from destroying our Nation.
This "war mongering asshat" is all about veterans. The City should make the sacrifice to erect a memorial to it's fallen. The State of Illinois should be taking better care of it's disabled veterans. Have you ever been to a VA hospital? Golden opportunity-Veteran's Day...I assure you, it will open your eyes...
I am saddened by the fact that so few combat veterans this day and age cannot make a commitment to a veterans organization. I'm not even saying mine...I am saying any veterans organization out there. The older generations are dying and we must continue to keep the veterans organizations going!

007 was dead for the most part. Nothing going on at all. Was just another friday night out there. Just some gunfire all over the district and a Homocide, but that is pretty much a friday night there in the summer.
The suburban guys are armmed to the teeth and had tons of gear and ammo. They were in shock about what we had. The even commented on the gas team or strike force team over there in the vans. Can only asume gas team as beat tag said gas. They said those guys barely had any gear or weapons at all. They said their small depeartmenet has more stuff that that van did on a daily basis and this van was to be "loaded" for the night. Our department should be ashamed of the way they equip us.
Also would like to comment on how many P.O.'s were on foot posts on the corners in 007 in their personal vehicles. This was absolutely appallling. WTF is wrong with this department? God forbid it gets nuts. The bosses who directed them to go there in their personal cars I am sure would never drive theirs there. We all kow they have take home car anyway. Stuff like this should be in the paper. Not "celebratoy gunfire" WTF! Clebratory gunfire? I thought guns were illegal in the city. News makes it sound like it's ok to shoot.
Hope the suburban guys enjoyed their tour through Englewood. Wlecome to what we deal with every fri and Sat night and all through the summer. These guys had brand new Suv's and cars, kevlar helmets M4's and shotguns and here we are with our officers standing on the corner in their personal vehicles. UNFUNIBELIEVEABLE. So, can we now and forever put an end to the notion that racism is the cause of crime, high school drop out rates, poverty, out of wedlock birth rates and so on. The rantings of Jesse Jackson, Rev. As an ordinary citizen I'd like to thank all of the cops that worked late last night and kept the peace. It was quite an evening. I know that not all of you agreed with the (occasionally unruly) people celebrating in the streets but you worked for them and for all of us whether or not you found joy in the proceedings. This is something that you do everyday and you get much less acknowledgment than you deserve. Thank you.
I hope that we can weed out some of the management problems in the department and get you guys a contract.

Can anyone confirm this? Tuesday night at about 19.30 hrs. a 10-1 was called in the subway at Gran/Halsted/Milwaukee. Responding units arrive and at street level pass 2 female P.O.s standing on the corner.
After the 10-1 is settled the responding units go back up to street level. One of the asist units asks the 2 female P.O.s if they had heard the 10-1. They say yes. When asked why they didn't go down to the train station their response was, they could not leave their post.
If true, they should be fired now. If true, what office were they from. If true, was this post created to to give them some it?

I was part of the Grant Park detail last night, having to bring my Tact Team there. I must say, the higher-ups in this department are COMPLETELY clueless, and they will be the ones who get the praise that because of their "expertise", nothing major happened at Grant Park or in the neighborhoods. But I will tell you this. I was VERY proud to be a Chicago Police Officer! All the Officers conducted themselves quite professionally, and I was very impressed with the camaraderie that was shown amongst our fellow Officers. This is the way we need to treat each other. In this day and age, it sometimes seems all we have is each other. Put away the petty bullshit and continue to be there for each other. We know the morons at the controls are useless, but NEVER stop looking out for each other.
Glad all went home safe!!!

Not everyone behaved themselves when celebrating U.S. President-elect Barack Obama’s historic win Tuesday night.
Some fired gunshots, a felon accused cops of arresting him "because a black man won for president" and a teenager standing with throngs of passionate revelers used the opportunity to slap a police officer, Cook County prosecutors said.
Although no incidents occurred in Grant Park, there were several accounts of crimes in the wake of Obama's victory.
"White bitches. F--- McCain. You white police can’t do nothing," 19-year-old Celita Hart taunted officers as she stood with a throng of Obama supporters in the 6900 block of South Western Avenue, Assistant State’s Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said in a court Wednesday.
At some point, authorities said, Hart left the crowd, which had been chanting "Obama, Obama," walked up to a squad car, and smacked a male officer in the face.
Hart was one of a half-dozen charged in Election Night-related arrests. A slew of others facing weapon and reckless discharge violations appeared in central bond court.
None of the incidents occurred in Grant Park, where Obama addressed a giddy crowd of 240,000 late Tuesday.
West Sider Narada Thomas, 23, told police he shot a .22-caliber revolver in the air to "celebrate Obama becoming president," Scaduto said. And 37-year-old Andre Murph, of Aurora, shot a 9mm into the ground several times in the 700 block of West 60th Place to express his joy, Scaduto said.
"It was an exciting night," Murph’s attorney James E. Thompson shrugged before Judge Israel Desierto.
While Kenneth Smith, a 24-year-old felon, never stated why he fired three rounds at his residence, in the 6700 block of South Ada Street, he complained that officers only arrested him because a black man won for president, Scaduto said.
Peer pressure seemed to get the better of 54-year-old Joseph Morgan, who allegedly was caught holding a .22-caliber gun in the air on his back porch in the 5700 block of South Lowe Avenue.
His excuse, according to prosecutors?
"Everybody else is shooting their guns, I figured, ‘Why not?’

Just a few quick observations from a KMA guy. The suburban guys in 007 were great and looking to engage our fine ghetto citizens. The suburban guys were well equipped with M4, lots of ammo, kevlar helmets, body armor, new cars, flex cuffs, riot batons and on and on. The way we were equipped was completely sad and very telling on how we are thought of by our brass and citizens of Chicago. There is NO reason why we can't be equally equipped. I would argure that we need to be equipped as well due to the higher risk of injury that what a typical suburban copper might encounter. Clearly, we are not serious about officer safety nor about crime fighting. sadly we are all just window dressing to give nn appearance of a real law enforcement agency. Lastly be very careful about dong police work in this environment is it not the time nor the place Im afraid.

Your policy covers your vehicle as transportation only to and from your normally assigned place of work such as your district, unit and court.
If your personal vehicle got destroyed at a location you were temp assigned to because it was a potential hot spot or an area that a riot may occure. Your Insurance Company would not have been liable to cover the damages.
Read your policy! It is the City's responsibility to provide tranportation to and from a field assignment in these situations, NOT YOURS!!!
You should never use your personal vehicle in this way again. Did nay of the Suburban guys drive their own vehicles in? HELL NO!!!

Working my rdo that night was pure boredom in my northside district. But monitoring zone 10, Lupe and Lyna and the other dispatchers once again showed they are the "Masters of disasters". The media didn't notice but we "The Team" (no thanks to me) got it done. I should think the Supe would want to get out in front on this and say "Thanks." I for one say "Great Job Officers!"

I will not presume to answer for SCC but here are a few scraps of info. According to my notes, Hutchinson Field was "opened" early, at around 6:15 PM instead of the stated 8:30 PM. I assume that means the Secret Service/gate security got busy according to plan, screening and admitting ticketed supporters.
They were also letting people into the unsecured Butler Field/Petrillo bandshell area around that time. The emphasis throughout was to move, move, move people off of Michigan Avenue and off the bridges and into Grant Park where there was room for them.
At one point there was a crowd surge forward in that area and mounted Chicago officers were called to the spot to control things. It sounded like everything was contained easily.
TV last night did show a snip of a couple of dozen people running through the park to "get a good spot;" I didn't see them carrying anything, so this may have been taken in Hutchinson Field after they were admitted.
A few people did try to get in from the Lake Shore Drive side and were stopped by Chicago Police, who were even calling in license numbers on unmarked police vehicles (unfamiliar to them, from other agencies)to make sure everything was what it appeared to be.
I don't think anyone just pushed the Secret Service aside and walked in...(grin)

In a wide-ranging speech Tuesday, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis questioned the success of the war on drugs strategy and suggested looking at more creative ways to address the nation's narcotics problem.
"Is it really working?" said Weis, speaking at a City Club of Chicago luncheon.
Weis pointed out that efforts to reduce the supply of cocaine have been ineffective, citing that the cost of a kilogram of cocaine has remained about the same for the last few decades.He also outlined his department's efforts to address the surge in violence in many of Chicago's neighborhoods, reiterating much of what he said last week when he appeared before the City Council.
Weis said he plans to combat the increase in crime by targeting gangs that cause the most violence.
Ultimately, the priority to reduce violence trumps the department's need to combat drugs, he said.
"Life has become extraordinarily cheap in some neighborhoods," Weis said. "If a gang is dealing drugs and not killing anyone . . . that's not on our priority list."
He also raised the possibility of realigning city district beats for the first time since 1978.
"[Since then], communities have changed," said Weis. "It's time we take a hard look at how we deploy our resources."
Weis said that as superintendent, one his biggest challenges is communicating with his officers because of the sheer size of the department.

hey 7:05, read the order. The guidance and leadership was smart enough to let the D/Cs call the shots in their districts since they're supposed to know where the trouble would be. The district personnel handled it outstandingly, as was designed, and the assistance from other units within the department and the outside agencies all augmented the spots where trouble was expected.
There was a very hot period that lasted less than an hour in most districts, up to three in some, but anyone who was around for any of the six Bulls’ nights will tell you this was nothing compared to that and we looked better as a department than we have in years.
Congrats to all that were assigned that night, CPD and the outside agencies that helped out.
My wife went to Hutchinson field for the event, and she told me she and her girlfriend were definitely NOT searched prior to being allowed entry.
I was at the ticketed entrance on congress with my radio on car to car and the Lt. says one shot near 130 and Torrence..When I checked the news on internet and I couldnt find mention of it..Any 004 guys care to chime in??.....And by the way media, thanks for nothing and GFY...
For those of you who think Obama is ready to be president and will do a good job.

The only saving grace about politics is:

Russia is already playing games. Hours after Obama was decided as president elect, russian president says they are going to deploy missles in a region close to the poland border, in response to the U.S. having a missle defense system (Russain pres. did not say if they were armed with nuclear warheads or not). This is not a veiled threat, this is adversaries of ours in our world giving us a push and watching how we respond. I hope Obama can stand up the right way to these aggressors and others and not empower them into a second cold war.

I asked a young co-worker who attended the ticketed area of the obama rally if he had to open his coat for a search. And he said no, that they were just told to keep their coats on. And that bags weren't searched.
