Uniform Craziness
The order is out and the criticism has begun:
- No Cargo pants, BDUs or gym shoes?
- Ties, Crown Caps and 80/20's required.
A number of people have weighed in with criticism of the order. A segment of the readership thinks everyone should stop bitching and go with the order. Another group wants to show up as they want and dare the Department to send them home.
A point of order - they aren't going to send you home. Sorry, but it ain't happening. It will be noted somewhere that you showed up out of uniform and some memo will be generated delineating disciplinary action to be taken. Our guess is everyone will get a day and any grievance will be denied as the Department is well within it's rights to require a uniform. That's why it's called a "uniform."
That being said, whoever decided this is an idiot, a moron and probably a house-mouse who never worked an "event" like Billiken, the Marathon, a Bulls riot, an Air & Water Show, or the 96 Convention.
Old timers point out that they did all this and more in the 60s and 70s in Grant Park, Humbolt Park, Marquette Park and a dozen more locations with less equipment, fewer vehicles, and without any FOP protections. Good for you - we appreciate your service. However, progress is a good thing and having more and better equipment is even better. How about being uniformly comfortable and functional? More pockets for a long tour could be a good thing. Turtlenecks as opposed to neckties (clip-on or velcro), can be a safety concern. Riot helmets, while hopefully not needed, should be close at hand just in case, not in a bus, trunk or anywhere but at youe side. Gear bags are not going to cut it Tuesday. Opinions?

WTF? I hope this order isn't true. I just spent a bunch of money on cargo pants and a new hat. The department is pissing me off. The cargo pants were a great addition to the department. I carried a bunch of shit in there that I used quite regularly. Whoever wrote this order needs their head examined.
if it is to make us "appear" better on tv it is dumb. most of my family members and friends make fun of the officers that wear the goofy hats and ties. it doesn't make you look more professional. this isn't a fucking office job. wearing cargo pants, black vest covers and any fucking kind of shoes we want makes us look more like the police.

If Obama becomes president, can his influence help Chicago Police Headquarters? I've been there for a couple of years and I always wondered why I feel unbalanced when I walk around the place. Then I realized, the building is sinking. Yes, the building is sinking. You can feel it when you walk and you can see the floor and bottom moldings separating by 3+ inches. I think I need to go back to the district. I have this sinking feeling a floor is about to collapse.
I noticed on the last transfer order (K.G. - 023) was not on the order. K.G. why did you not bid to a unit with an alternative schedule? Give up the foot post and at least go on tact in 023. I forgot - we do not want you. At least have some balls and give up your foot post!

I assume the reasoning for ordering us to be donned in almost dress blues, is they do not want us to look as if we are preparing for a riot. The mayor doesn't want to give the media the ammo to bring up 1968.
And he doesn't want to frighten the world watching by letting tv cameras film CPD wearing their everyday field gear uniform, plus helmet.
They don't want the Olympic Committee to think that CPD goes to work dressed in field gear every day. Midget wants the Olympic Committee to think that CPD dresses pretty like that every day, because we can, because there is no crime problem in Chicago.
As frigging stupid as it sounds, this frigging mayor wants to pretend that nobody knows that after we eat our cereal, we put on a bullet proof vest just to go to work. You know, just in case a Chicago citizen or non-citizen wants to kill us today.
Every police officer in America would agree, that CPD should be dressed in our field and riot gear on Tuesday to send a clear and concise message to EVERYBODY that we will not tolerate unlawful activity on election day and that we are prepared to do so, if necessary. I've always been a proponent of "pick your battles" and there never was a better opportunity than this to stick together. We cannot strike, but on this issue, we can stick together. If everyone was to stick together and end up on the "list", how could they possibly suspend everyone on that list? This is an officer safety issue and I will put money down that it ends up in a lawsuit with the officers on the winning end. The city would have no choice but to back down and give in. You may initially get that 1 day suspension but will be more than compensated in the end. Besides, when the sh*t hits the fan, you will be prepared.

Now get this scenario, things start going bad and bottles are flying, people are starting to challenge the police.We are to break our line or leave the post to go get our equipment. We have to put on our equipment and then return, how long do you think that will take? SO they will want us to do it in shifts, one team goes the others stays then the reverse, lessening our presence at any given point. This is nonsense at it's finest, whomever came up with this policy has no tactical knowledge of troop deployment or movement. This policy promotes image over tactics and will get people hurt, we wouldn't want our police to look too intimidating would we? Nobody better lose a day because they lost their hat and shield because of this ridiculous policy and anyone who gets injured because of this policy should file a suite against the city for sending the troops in harms way unequipped with a proper uniform. As mush as I dislike the plastic helmets, they will stop thrown objects but we should be wearing Kevlar Brain buckets that actually stop bullets. The Kevlar can be obtained free from government surplus stockpiles and many departments have gotten lots of good useful stuff free from the government, but not us. It's just too intimidating and they don't want to anger the rev's. I hope I get hurt at this little party. I'm seriously tired of dealing with this incompetence and this just may be my ticket out. I'm sure there's a good civil lawyer out there that would like to make a few million from the suite I'm going to file.

Hey, simple simon, look at the big picture.... I just replaced my APPROVED cargo pants and baseball cap a few weeks ago, thinking I was good for at least the next couple years.... so 2 days before the barakolipse now I have to go back to the store and buy all new pants and tie? No, I can't wear my old ones-- sold them. See, the Dept put out a new order a few years back authorizing all of the stuff I just bought, so its not that I'm complaining about having to wear a uniform, its that I HAVE 2 FREAKING DAYS TO REPLACE my uniform. If the city wants to change things, fine.... I should be grandfathered.... what a crock of shit. Way to stand together asshat!

Work in a unit never was told what uniform to wear. Only told the tenative hours and location.So I guess I will be wearing what I feel will make my 12 hours easier for me.

Word from HQ meeting the other day is that the city and police upper peep's say that if it gets out of control just let them riot...I mean rally. The city does not want to look like a police state. "find cover" is the term used.
The smoke signals of our scout warriors tell us there has been a change in plans. We must leave Little Bighorn for Grant Park on the large lake. It will be there that we will meet General Custer and the 7th Cavalry.
I don't have a pair of 80/20's anymore and am not going to buy a new pair just so that they will be ruined at the celebration.

I've been told by my brother that there will be about 120 ISP Troopers assigned to this event as well. They have been told that black helmets with face shields will be work. Gas Masks will be on their side and riot batons in their hands. M-4's will remain in squads unless needed and called for.
Personally I don't think those 1970's powder blue, bowling ball looking CHiP's helmets are going to intimidate anyone. They'll definitely incapacitate the crowds due to uncontrollable laughing though so I guess it wouldn't hurt to bring them along.

Daley is an evil genius. Since the PD is shorthanded and crime is skyrocketing, he cant really make us take an unpaid furlough day like other departments without taking a lot of heat. However, a suspension day accomplishes the same thing financially and without the negative press. By issuing a last minute order it ensures a decent % of the officers will not be in compliance. And if the rally takes a turn for the worse you can bet there will be plenty of hats missing in action as they are not really battle ready (lost shield = additional suspension day). Another walsh (envelope to daley), the floors are a "short pour" plain English there was not enough concrete set dwn it was shorted to pay off daley! The desks have drawers that open, unless they have a wedge under it, the doors in winter are way off aloowing cold air to blow in, the parking lot is sinking, they must keep the janitors with squeeges when it rains to push water away from building otherwise it would flood first floor! Grow up!!! You can't stamp your feet, and hold your breath til mommy says, "OK OK you can wear your bears jersey for the 7th straight day". Remember we took this job to wear a uniform, not be the "fashion police". Most of us old timers have been through many a battle in those 80/20's. They held up just fine, tears and all.
If you are given an order to wear a uniform WEAR IT. We are the police, we are use to taking ORDERS right???? Every time we put the uniform on we are proud to wear it, no matter what form or functionality it has or may not have. We all survived battling it out in the jets, the westside and the southside wearing our 80/20's, why should this be any different??? ADAPT, IMPROVISE AND OVERCOME!!!!
Many of our brother's and sister's in blue have been murdered in that uniform. They wore it proudly. If it was good enough for them, it is good enough for me.
This isn't your mommy's CPD cry baby, this is THE CPD. Take your orders and follow them. You want to be "unique" to "buck the system" then you are in the wrong job. Right or wrong about this decision of uniforms, it is the decision that was made. Suck it up and do it. You are no longer unique, you are no longer "special", you aren't going to get a gold star on the fridge like your mommy gave you because you did a great job in art class or t-ball. Your identity is just one in several thousand, wear the uniform that all CPD will be wearing, sans the gas teams, HBT/SWAT and whomever else. (by the way, good luck to the gas teams and HBT/SWAT). They know what time it is, and when you see them roll up, thank your lucky stars and get out of their way, them boys know how to do their job.
I can safely say that alot of you were not in any bulls riots, the WTO, the war protests etc... The last thing you worried about was your uniform. Some of us changed on the fly right on the street when need be. Yup even us broads changed infront of our male partners. Duty before anything else, safety is paramount. At times we were in our BDU's already. Gas masks on our legs and ready to rock and roll, and we did.
I can see you whiney ass college kids bitching and moaning at home. Oh man, i have to wear the "prescribed" uniform of the day. I want more pockets, i want to look great in my cargo's, they have more room in them. SO WHAT!!!! Do you know how ridiculous you sound? (And yes we both have a college education, and where hired when you were still playing with your tonka truck).
The most important thing out there is not your uniform, it is where your head is at, and hopefully it isnt up your ass like it is right now with bitching about uniform pants.
Carry your extra gear in a go bag, or a backpack so you can get to it and mobile in a hurry. You know a backpack like you carried around in COLLEGE!!! Stay with your team and with your partner's. Oh i almost forgot who i was talking to, the one's who are bitching about pants, i doubt if they are worried about their partner's, just how they look and how comfy their ball sacks will be, and how many extra things you can carry to look like the real police.
Take some of the advice from the other old timers on this blog, and just go out and do the job you were trained for and are PAID for, contract or no contract. Tonight and the days to follow just might be the most interesting of your career.
This reminds me of the Clint Eastwood movie "Heartbreak Ridge", all the whiney ass pussy's trying to buck the system, not take order's and be "unique". What did dear old Sgt.Gunny Highway do?? He prescribed a different TSHIRT uniform of the day to show them they were in the MILITARY and do as they are told. You wear and do as you are told. Not what you feel like doing.
