Joe, you were a good friend, and a hell of a cop. Too bad your promising career was cut down much too short by a madman, along with a little fear shown by your FBI comrades at the time you were wounded. You're in a better place now, Joe. Rest easy, Brother... your famiy is in good hands. You're in heaven now, and free from all your ails. Take care, I will never forget you.

Rest in Peace Brother Joe, you earned your place in the Kingdom of the Lord. Your Brother and Sister Detectives in Area 2 will never forget you, or what our incompetent Headquarters bosses, and the F.B.I. neglected to do on that tragic day. What happened to you is the most WRONG thing I've seen on this Department in over 25 yrs; IN-EXCUSABLE...
Your killer will rot in Hell for eternity for what he did to you. Too bad it's not the old days of the Real Police, he'd have been Greased permenantly at the scene.

Now let me spew some venom. Although I am now retired I still keep pretty close contact with the job through my son. It will gall me to no end if this Jody fool has the nerve to offer an eulogy at Joe Airhart's honors funeral. Weis, Brust, Daly, Klimas should not be allowed to even attend St. Judes let alone attend the funeral. They and their asshole cohorts from the Fucking Bunch of Idiots (FBI) where the ones who would not Lenny B and the boys into the apartment to kill that rat bastard bank robber and rescue Joe. How these phony want to be police can look themselves in the mirror is beyond me.

Joe - You fought the good fight, and we all respect your courage and tenacity that you showed with that fight.

The Good Lord, and you, both must have decided that you were too tired to continue this fight, and NOBODY would ever blame you. What a good fight it was Joe, what a brave man, officer, and inspiration you were.

Nobody will forget you, nobody from the CPD or the FBI. The wounds run deep, it has been a bad year for us Joe, we do not trust the FBI, we miss our dear departed brothers, and we pray for ALL of you.

Your passing has given us, the members of the CPD, something to remember and that is nobody will ever forget you, and hopefully, nobody will ever let what happened to you at the hand of the Feds, EVER, EVER happen again to one of us.

It is called a thin blue line for many reasons – and not all of them are negative.

You rest in peace brother, your family stays strong, and your memory will always be carried on.

Two armed FBI agents were there when Joe got shot and they FLED like the piece of shit cowards they are.

They retreated a safe distance and called for backup. They WERE the fucking backup! They were there! They had the guy outnumbered and outgunned. And they RAN. Their first impulse when our guy got shot was to RUN.

A short time after Det. Airhart got shot there was a retirement party for a Sgt. who worked as liaison with other agencies, secret service, FBI etc.

Maurer was up front at the lectern talking to the guests. He said a few words about the retiree, scanned the tables and acknowledged some secret service agents in attendance.

Maurer again scanned the tables and asked if their were any FBI agents there. He paused, pretended not to see any and said "Well, I guess they are all out practicing how to run away from gunfights."

Great applause and red faces at the table of FBI agents sitting right there followed. Maurer was great like that.

Never trust a Fed!

Detective Joseph Airhart Jr.
E.O.W.
November 4, 2008
Det. Joseph Airhart Jr. was gravely wounded seven years ago as he tried to arrest a bank robbery suspect inside a south loop apartment building.

Airhart was a 19 year veteran at the time assigned to the FBI's fugitive task force in 2001 when he was shot in the head while leading a team of FBI agents into an apartment to arrest Daniel Salley.

Salley held Det. Airhart hostage for more than two hours after he was shot. He spent nearly two months in a coma at Northwestern Hospital.

Salley was sentenced in 2006 to life in prison plus 132 years in Airhart's death. Salley was convicted of 15 felony charges, including two counts of attempted murder, after a jury rejected his claim that he was the victim of a government conspiracy.

Joseph Airhart Jr. 53, passed away November 4, 2008 at 12:50 p.m. at Trinity Hospital. Det. Airhart will be waked at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave. on Monday, November 10th from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

On November 5th, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation presented a check in the amount of $50,000.00 to the Airhart Family

Please keep Det. Airhart and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I was one of the many officers detailed to Northwestern Hospital after Det. Airhart was shot. I will not forget those many days and nights there as this good man struggled to stay alive.

His struggle is now over. May the good Lord welcome him into Paradise and grant him eternal rest.

As for the FBI, initially they were part of the detail and then after about 3 or 4 weeks they became too "busy" to remain on it. Just as well! It was better that we watched out after our own. Just plain old disgusting how they left Joe on Wabash for those two hours.

What another sad loss for us.

God bless you, detective.

His mother is a great woman. She has Jody's cell on her speed-dial, and isn't afraid to say what we've all been saying to his face. She doesn't take any crap from him or his FBI coward partners, and makes sure they footed all of his bills. She continues to stand up for CPD, our rights, and our safety as officers. God Bless Detective Airhart's soul.

We all owe it to him and his family to be present in OUR full dress uniform in honor of departed brother.

I was not there, but have spoken to some who were, and I know the boys of Chicago Police Department, even in the worst slow down in this department’s history, would NEVER have left our brother out there to die for so long.

The FBI including J-FED owe Detective Airhart, his family, and the CPD an apology for their unforgiveable cowardness.

To retreat and run over the body of fallen comrade is inexcusable. Especially when he was the only one with the balls enough to try to rouse SALLY into opening up the door by delivering the package while his back up waited down the hall. To wait for FBI's HRT to respond when CPD's HBT was ready to go almost immediately and then get some reporter to talk this psycho down, is just incomprehensible.

You were a true hero and should never be forgotten.

And as far as FEDS go, the FBI truly believes they are the best of the best. We put more handcuffs on REAL bad guys in five years, than they do their whole careers.

Other Federal agencies also hate the FBI, I'm sure a couple of other FEDS read this blog and can confirm, but probably won't respond because the g-men might illegally track their i. p. address. F'm they need to hear the truth sometimes. Maybe they'll re-join the good fight and start focusing on REAL bad guys and leave us to be the REAL POLICE we used to be. And when I say REAL POLICE, I don't mean the few a@#holes who were out robbing and stealing for themselves.

The real good guys are still out here but our hands are tied.

Remember to be there because it’s the least we can do for our fallen brother. That’s what we do for OUR fallen brothers, others(and YOU know who YOU are) could learn from our showing.
