This is ridiculous. We just traveled 15 miles through the City. Guess how many plows we saw? Guess how many salt trucks? We'll give you a hint:

One of the newspapers noted "slip-and-fall" visits to the emergency rooms were something like three times usual averages. Our own Medical Section has noted a marked increase in injuries related to icing. How much is Daley willing to lose in missed work time, lawsuit payouts and lost sales tax revenue when everyone decides to do their Christmas shopping somewhere they can actually drive to in less than an hour? It's three-and-a-half hours from downtown to O'Hare and the city doesn't even do the expressways anymore. Surface streets are worse.

I saw lots of trucks over on 106th east of torrence, in the city lot.
I actually saw a truck, but it wasn't plowing or salting, then I saw another one, plowing but that was it in a 3 hour drive throughout the south east and west side.
Some little worm from Streets and San was just on TV wringing his hands and whining about "budgetary constraints." You'd think we didn't pay taxes here.
They shoot fireworks off all summer, and "Animal Control" drives around passing out dogs instead of helping bite victims (they have repeatedly had trucks at the Norwood Park train station) but they can't afford to plow.

I had a 1 hour commute home today. It usually takes me 20 minuets to get home in rush hour traffic. I never saw any, nada, zip, zilch, zero, snow trucks. Oh wait, I lied, I did see one. A local hospital hired a salt/plow truck to clear the CITY streets around the hospital so that the ambulances could get to it. Un-frickin-believeable!

Michael Bilandic's demise was his attitude towards inadequate snow removal under his regime. Daley has the same attitude and is putting thousands of pedestrians and motorists at risk. This is about safety and if you have to spend the money for safety you do it. He can't be nickel and diming us for his Olympics, which is exactly what he is doing. I hope the voters remember this (and all the fraud) when it comes to election time.

Saw not a single plow, and I was out shoveling snow on NW Hwy for over an hour. Usually you see a few of them go by in even 20 minutes. No wait..I take that back. I did see one. It was Park Ridge's. They pay out the ass like we do in taxes, only they get something for their money.

Hello from North and Harlem. Not one snow plow. Stopped at the grocery store and told the two young check-out girls, in 1979, Mayor Bilandic lost an election for just this reason. Seems to me you can be as inept or corrupt as can be, so long as the snow gets plowed and the garbage get picked up. We Chicagoans have such a low expectancy, and now the City can't even make that threshold.

There were 8 snow plows seen in the area of 14th and Indiana salting and plowing every street, sidewalk and alley.

8:07 PM -- Channel 9's Julie Unruh was just sent out to drive from Addison and Western to O'Hare Airport -- what she described as "the worst assignment of her life" took her over two hours. She said that she only saw three or four plows or salt trucks anywhere during the entire agonizing trip, and that everything, both city streets and expressways, was extremely slippery.
...and this is with only about 3.1" at Midway and 4.3" at O'Hare.

In Edgebrook we used to have a privare contractor McGinty Bros plow our streets and alleys. If they had told us ahead of time that the city was no longer going to plow we could have hired someone. I don't blame anyone but the alderman Dougherty for not keeping his ward informed.

it is time for the City Council to demand the testing of Daley's sanity. This man is not mentally right. He spends millions blowing off fireworks all spring, summer, and fall, but can't plow and salt the streets of Chicago properly to assure the safety of the taxpayers as much as possible. He can't hire police officers, not even to replace the attrition rate of the department, so citizens and fellow police officers can be safer from crime. I saw a city forestry, tree trimming truck, in the hood today. It was rolling after the snow had started falling. I didn't see any down trees anywhere.
Who needs plows when we have the trees being taken care of. I guess without year round attention the trees won't bloom come spring. I'm guessing we will see the plows on patrol in July and August.

My commute was from downtown to Norwood Park, normally 30-40 minutes, tonight 2.5 hours from 4:00-6:30 PM. I, like most of you, during that time saw not a single Chicago plow or truck. I did see one plow but it was IDOT's on the Kennedy. 10:00PM now, I still haven't seen one, and I live on a snow route.

I have been told that the plan is to play that the City is broke and create additional fees for trash pick up $300.00 a year, Snow removal $300.oo a year, street cleaning $100.00 a year.
Parking permits will soon be city wide. They have already sent out the letters to those who own pick up trucks, this will be free for the first year, $10.00 for the second year and $25.00 after that, then who knows. Next year you will be requied to have a parking permit for every vehicle just like your city sticker. And if you think the permits will be free you are wrong.
Fees for printing your city paycheck and the electronic deposit are also being concidered, $5.00 each payday. I don't have to tell you it won't be 5 bucks for very long!
These line items are already in committee and all are expected to pass by the 1st of march.

A 1% City INCOME TAX, I have word that this a deal has already been made on this one. 1% now but expect 3% by 2012.

I happened to be in the Loop during the afternoon and evening, and the streets were an absolute joke. I didn't see a single snow plow until about 1900hrs, and then only three of them between then and 2230hrs. Driving down State St was treacherous. What the hell kind of city is this? The third largest city in the United States can't handle a basic service like snow removal? How can Chicago be expected to handle an operation as massive as the Olympics?

Today was a MUST to be out and about for a dr. appt. for the sick graqndchild! a 4 mile drive was an eternity and not one city snow plowing/salt spreading truck in view, NOT ONE!!
The city lost a lot of $$ from us this yr. I know we don't matter in the scheme of things, a few thou in hotels, same in restaurants, but we spent all of our christmas $$ in town before. Crime is CRAZY there!!! Not your fault (esp. when your bosses are all criminals too!) but the city just sucks anymore.
Drove frpm uic to Oak Lawn at 2pm, no plow observed. Oaklawn to Mt Greenwood 4Pm, No Plow observed . Dan Ryan back to Taylor street 4:30 to 6:30 Pm, one plow seen on lasalle off dan Ryan. 1 &43st and 1 at 35th Dan Ryan,.
Wow, we sure do cry about a lot of shit. I personally don't mind.
1. Now when I shovel my spots in front of the house the plow doesn't come by and screw up the job.
2. My snowthrower clears the crap with ease because it isn't slushy from the salt.
Just give me a refund on my taxes and Daley can shove his plows.

I went to the medical section today to get off the medical. As I was leaving I slipped and fell on my ass just as I stepped off the curb to get to my car. I stayed down for two reasons. 1 because I haven't fallen down since I was 7 years old. 2 I was checking to see if anything hurt. To my regret, nothing did so I shook it off and went home. Now I'm home and my ankle is a little stiff. Fuckit. Too late.

f this. i live in downers grove and took 290 home from downtown today from work during rush hour.......4 hours and 41 min.. i have traveled in years past from my office downtown and never had that long of a travel... its not just the city, i hear rumblings that the state is taking the same course of not plowing all day but all at once...more bang for the buck...send all trucks out at once for 4 hours instead of 8 or 12 while the snow is falling...just wait till the snow is done falling and all of my hair is gone...41 years of working downtown have i ever been stuck that long....well..maybe one year we had a big storm..but that was the exception!!
Yes, I remember the commercial in the early 80's. Little Janey Byrne standing in the street as the snow fell, blaming Bilandic for a lousy job. It worked! Too bad this wasn't an election year for mayor. Daley would have the streets spotless.
I suggest Gurnee Mills. Large parking lot and they plow it! Everything is indoors and with the economy the way it is, every freakin store had huge sales going. My wife was in heaven! The best part was we saved money and non of what we spent goes to Lord ShortShanks!!!

Speaking of which, the GPS people were up in 024 about 2 weeks ago. Seems like they are having a bit of a problem with the system because they were out in force working on each car that had already been fitted. Talked to one of the techs who told me it now looks like the system won't be online until June 2009.
No plows + no salt on streets = no work from me. Hit medical instead. Fuck them. My commitment to the city is in the same dumper as their commitment to citizens.

Complain when you vote for someone else as Mayor. 78% of the citizenry didn't even bother to show up to vote for mayor last time. Only a 22% turnout. Out of that, 80% voted for Daley.

Just wait until that 20 min drive to the station takes you over 2 hrs! Then when you finally get in, they greet you with a time due slip!!!
Went to bed at 2300, woke up at 0500 for work street is plowed and salted. Driveway clear too, snow removal company must have come out overnight. I reside on the corner and actually both streets were plowed. Also live in the city.
The powers that be, called us in too late.
The streets started getting wet at 11am, we should've started salted around 2pm to prep for rush hour.
I just needed to make one or two passes on my route and it wouldve been clear.
Instead.
We were playing catch up the whole day. By the time rush hour started we were already screwed.
No joke, I could plow my entire route with in 30 mintues. It took me an hour n half to go ONE way.
I never worked so hard to get so little accomplished.
Ive been plowing downtown for a long time and never saw traffic so horrible.
The SNOW was NOTHING last night, Ive seen it 10 times worse and the we dropped the ball. I saw double-buses jack-knifed, abandoned cars, light poles and traffic signals down.
The best were our supervisors on the radio. . . lol.

I really wanted to know WHICH streets they were talking about.
Not just that, the big bosses were going on the air telling all the guys to put down a LIGHT spread of salt ... lol... joke.
I was BLASTING my street and getting NOTHING done.
I can go only as fast as traffic. The salt needs to bounce across the pavement to prevent freezing and melt existing snow. When Im crawling along at 5mph, it doesnt help.
I do want to thank the POLICE downtown for acting like a linebacker for me ... lol. He or She came up my side and shagged some scum bag cabbies that just would not get out of my way. I proceeded to follow him for about 3 miles

We didnt start getting anything done until about 8pm, they switched us out around 11-12p-ish. As a CDL holder we can only work around 16 hours in a row.
SORRY people, we live in the neighborhoods too, most off us try to do a good job and make the streets safe.

Dipshit, we're talking main streets also. An engine in 008 took approximately 4 minutes to get 1 mile. It should take them less than 2. But hey, if you just want to plow in front of your own house and have the City plow nothing, good for you; Hope you need emergency services in a bad snowstorm and there is nothing plowed. They'll be there in, I'd say, about an hour. GFY

Over two hours in traffic yesterday.Drove north through Jefferson Park,Edgebrook and Wildwood and back. Radio reported ALL of the cities salt trucks were out in full force. I did not see ONE. NOT ONE. That story is complete BULLSHIT!

Came home from a bowling league at about 2300; Irving Park was in better shape than I-90. In fact, Irving was completely clear- no snow at all in the street. It took them eight hours after the snow started to fall, but they finally caught up. By then, hardly anybody was driving around.
Hopefully all the people that spent 3-4-5 hours getting home remember this in 2011 when they vote. Of course, you know in 2010 he'll have the streets totally clear every time we even get flurries.
At least crime stats will go down due to this. Coppers will be too busy writing accident reports, crimes will go unreported.

I call BS on the reports of all the snowplows also. I traveled from far south side to downtown yesterday at 1330, approx 20 miles and did not see ANY plows. My trip took 2 hours! Then on my return at approx 11pm I again did not see any plows,and it appeared as if Dan Ryan hadn't even been plowed yet. That trip took me an hour. Unbelievable.

They dropped the ball big time for this 2-4" snowfall storm. Even Idot who is usually on top of things, dropped the ball too. It took me close to 3hrs to get to work when it normally takes me 1/2 hour. It was insane and I almost ran out of gas. Wouldn't that have been a kick in the dick.

Yeah, it's just winter - but we used to be able to deal with it. We didn't piss away money all summer on fireworks and useless fencing and useless grooves and useless banners and double the street lighting needed; you should have seen the "Mayor Daley's Children's Program" box lunches I saw picked at and discarded in a northwest side park. Oh, the waste. Pushing food at the obese children of well-off people...giving them backpacks with City seals printed on them which they similarly discard...
Now there has to be a special session of the City Council to pass a new tax or sell something off to raise money every time a blip comes up on the weather radar.

Regarding a city income tax, I'm surprised it hasn't been imposed yet.
Most of the other large cities have it on everyone who works in that city, no matter where they live.
Look for a boost to the state income tax also, 3% is among the lowest amount of all the states that have it. 4 or 5% is the norm.
It sucks, but it is coming.

My sources in Streets and San tell me they did not even call a snow program until 2P.M. and that was for 50%, at 3P.M. some brain figured they better make it 100% program as every street in the city was snow covered.One problem was they called in guys who work on midnights to come in, one guy I know said they called him at 2P.M., but it took him 2 hours to get to where his truck was at. By the time they load with salt and head to their route, GEE it's FUCKING RUSH HOUR!!!

What Daley is showing us in his public safety ineptitude vis-a-vis snow plowing is that he is untouchable and master of the universe because he's got the gang-bangers getting out the vote for him and voting for him in tandem with all the people in Chicago with patronage jobs.
He's at a point where he doesn't give a flying fuck what we think about him because he's got the math to assure re-election and if he can't get the votes, he'll steal them.
