Ah, France

  • Preliminary: At least 445 cars were torched over the night of New Year's Eve in France, a 20 percent rise on last year, but there were relatively few clashes with police, the Interior Ministry and police said on Thursday.

Car burnings are regular occurrences in France but the registering the New Year's Eve total has become something of a tradition since they achieved symbolic status in the violent rioting that shook many of the country's poor suburbs in 2005.

With riots in Athens heightening worries that the economic crisis might spark a resurgence of the violence seen in the run-down "banlieues" then, 35,000 police were mobilised on New Year's Eve, some 7,000 more than last year.

  • Updated: The French press reported that the Interior Ministry released a final "verified" count of 1,147 vehicles burned in France over New Year's Eve. The number is up 30.64% from last year's total, 878.
It's sort of like "Devil's Night" in Detroit but instead of burning abandoned buildings, they torch cars. Those Frenchies, so continental and sophisticated.

I've never been to France, though I've always wanted to visit.

But as a child I always loved "Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown".

You know, when Snoopy was hanging around the tavern in the idyllic French countryside drinking root beer & relishing his adventures with the Red Barron!

Too bad those picturesque countrysides are just Muslim slums at this point.

Good grief!

Ah socialism at its best. Invite every one and their momma with open arms. Give them free medical and housing and when they see their dream unatainable they torch the cars. I can't see why people were talking bad about Bridgette Bardo (sp) when talking about the subject. I guess they want the US to do the heavy lifting again( WW1, WW1 and viet-nam)

WTTW will be running a never-before-seen episode from the show's first season featuring a young state Senator and law professor from Hyde Park named Barack Obama, who's gone on to bigger and better things since then. Obama was on the show to recommend Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop." Get your popcorn ready!

Nothing to do with the French, it's the same Arab immigrants who were rioting a while back, it's now a "tradition" for them.......the way in which it is a French problem is they don't have the balls to ship them all Barack where they O came from.....LOL....

Europe is at a boiling point on many issues.

Unemployment is at record highs in many countries, there is an underlying resentment of being ruled from Brussels and being part of the EU, there is a resurgence of nationalism throughout Europe, illegal aliens flooding the EU are being openly attacked and many Europeans feel that they are losing their cultural identity and are openly hostile to any form of multi-culturalism.

Expect the troubles in Athens to spread throughout Europe in 2009.

While I despise the French and everything that they stand for (particularly their lack of hygiene and waif-like, excessively hairy women) I would, with open arms, invite those French New Year's revelers to come to Chicago if they promised to torch every last fuckin' pool car that currently occupies our pathetic fleet. I would even organize a fundraiser to help defray the costs of their airfare, lodging and meals.

20% rise in arson incidents but few clashes with police? Where were our French counterparts in blue, exactly?

They're always ahead of the curve in France. Within a year we'll be watching TV shows like "The French Arsonist" or "Car-B-Que Francais" and loving it. Think of the 'spin-offs' "Americas Funniest Torch Jobs" "Flame, or No Flame" "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader-With Matches" "Hollywood Walk of Flame". Come on people let's get some title's out there for the studios to use.

Sounds to me as if they are having contract problems too. Let's see, massive extra Police out, 30% increase in the targeted crime, yet few clashes with Po Po. Yup, less work for less pay.

We're all going to get caught with our pants down in Chicago; just you watch. Daley keeps shmoozn the public and giving them all a false sense of security and most Chicago residents keep buying into his smoke and mirror bullshit. Unless the Chicago resident is a city worker or friend or family member of a city worker then they know the truth.

The pole camera's are a joke, the 3,000+ officers were short (soon to be 3,800 short by the end of 2009) is no laughing matter. Faulty equipments, unsecure stations, broken down unsafe squad cars, the long list goes on and on. Everybody with a brain should have an emergency plan put together with themselves and their families. Have cash on hand, batteries, canned food, weapons, a set meating place, etc. It's not if it's going to happen but when.

All of us recall the horror of September 11, 2001, where we were and what we were doing.

We were driving into St. Remy de Provence in the South of France. With the seven hour time difference, it was late afternoon on that day of infamy.

Villagers appeared stunned. Many were sobbing. It was only then that we learned of the attack on the World Trade Center.

Please don't try to stereotype an entire nation. The people of St. Remy were most sympathetic and showed love for America.

While I only know a few common French phrases, the gendarmes in Paris and our counterparts from other European cities were very cordial and helpful on all visits. Advice on hotels, restaurants, free passes on river cruises and to the sights, etc. I gave out a few CPS shoulder patches and hot sheets.

I am not a Francophile. Occasionally, you'd come upon assholes. However, what I term "the asshole factor" (the A-F) is much higher in many U.S. cities (including Chicago) than those of Western Europe. Cut the French some slack.

In my travels, the lowest A-F? Australia, hands down. And do those Aussies know how to have a good time!

Bon soir.

The rioters burning cars are not French, but Moslem. This is not a New Year's holiday phenomenon -- they riot and burn as they see the need to.

This is a race war, described by French writer Jean Raspail in the 1973 novel, Camp Of The Saints, in which he rightly predicted that the French "would lack the moral fibre to shoot the invaders."

Raspail says today --

"I am convinced that the fate of France is sealed, because 'My house is their house,' (Mitterand) inside 'Europe whose roots are as much Muslim as Christian,' (Chirac) and because the situation is moving irreversibly towards the final swing in 2050 which will see French stock amounting to only half the population of the country, the remainder comprising Africans, Moors and Asians of all sorts from the inexhaustible reserve of the Third World, predominantly Islamic, understood to be fundamentalist Jihadists, this dance is only the beginning."

"France is not the only concern. All of Europe marches to its death. The warnings are precise...yet they are systematically buried and the National Institute for Demographic Studies [INED] pushes disinformation.

"The almost sepulchral silence of the media, governments and community institutions on the demographic crash of the European Union is one of the more striking phenomena of our time.

"When there is a birth in my family or in the homes of my friends, I cannot look at this baby of our (race) without reflecting upon that which (awaits him due to) the negligent governments and what he must confront in his manhood...those of French stock, bludgeoned by the throbbing tom-tom of human rights, of the 'welcome to the outsider,' of the 'sharing' dear to our bishops, etc., framed by a whole repressive arsenal of laws known as 'anti-racist,' conditioned from early childhood with cultural and behavioral 'crossbreeding,' with the requirements of 'plural France'and with all the by-products of old Christian charity, will no longer have any other (choice)... but to merge without kids into the new mold French 'citizen' of 2050."

I travelled to France and the sterotypes posted here about the French are incorrect. I've also travelled to Quebec Canada as well visiting Montreal and Quebec City.

The French people that I encountered were very helpful and friendly. They were, for the most part, very well groomed. Lest someone forgot about Paris' connection to fashion. I didn't see too many Parisians dressed in blue jeans and sneakers.

The tours from Paris to Normandy were overwhelmingly geared toward American tourists. I had the priviledge of seeing the beaches where our brave soldier's landed during WWII and the American Cemetary.

One thing is for certain. Many Parisians like the third worlders invading their country as much as we like the illegals occupying ours. How many of us disagree with our government on this issue?

Gotta chime in here, as the family came from France. The German speaking part, but still France.

RELAX PEOPLE.

The French do not hate us any more or any less than anyone else hates us, and I include the population of California. Any big city in France if more pro-Americain than Berkley or San Fran.

Furthermore, we are not cowards. Really. My great-uncle went to La Belle Patrie with Pershing back in 1918 and he did not save France. The French pretty much did that themselves. Did we save the French in WW2? Oui, but they helped and the only reason they lost in 1940 was they were bled out in 1914-1918. Same thing with Vietnam, we didn't take over from them, maybe we should have learned from them. (no disrespect to President Eisenhower or Kennedy, but LBJ and McNamara can burn in hell)

Off the soap-box. (Yes, we French use soap just as much as the average Ami) The problems in France stem from unfettered emigration from the colonies. Lots of Moroccans and Algierans served in the French army during WW2 and the loss of empire, and ended up living in the country they served where they didn't really assimilate. And their grandchildren are assholes. Multi-generation project rats like we have here. And the new arrivals are making things worse.

I've been to France a couple of times and never had grief from French people or older North Africans. C'est le guerre.

I know as police officers we take great joy in bitching about everything, but lets at least have an idea what we're bitching about.

Oh, and Kateykakes, don't hate me because I'm French, love me because I am a man. No, really. Those thumbnail pictures are great.
