More Tahoe Problems

Interesting design error:
  • Anyone notice the serious design flaw in the new Tahoes concerning the cage? The gap on each side of the cage partition is wide enough for a whole ARM to fit thru and grab the driver or passenger in the front seat! And what did they do to correct this gap? The installed FLIMSY plastic secured with VELCRO- that's right- VELCRO!

FLOP was notified and didn't seem very interested. I know of officers who have sent a to-from to FOP notifying them of the safety issue.

In the meantime, boys and girls, be careful if you choose to transport anyone in the rear of your new Tahoe. Always handcuff anyone in your backseat, but we all know that some skinny crack-heads can get those cuffs in front of themselves. I swear, the gap is large enough for 2 skinny arms to poke thru and harm or annoy the POs in the front.

We should all be writing To-froms regarding this serious safety issue.
Watch yourselves while transporting or detaining subjects. Why they couldn't weld something a bit more permanent, we'll probably never know.

Why didn't the WEISel just order Ford Crown Vics in the first place?

Under scrutiny, his sole excuse was the "Chicago winters". The proffered justification for purchasing a fleet of 2-wheel drive Tahoes with the "roll over" hazard is nothing more than superfluous drivel.

In addition, a comparative cost analysis of the two vehicles should prove quite interesting.

Please reconsider Tahoes as police vehicles. They do not serve the purpose of a large municipal police department in any better way than a car does. J-Fed, if you miss Tahoes, then please go back to the FBI. Let us handle real crime the way only we can.

On one hand it is nice we got new vehicles finally. The Tahoe's do drive better than the Crown Vics and do have better handling believe it or not. They also have better pick up. The height advantage in the Tahoe's is good too. However, maneuver ability in the Tahoe's is a lot more difficult considering how large the Tahoes are. The Tahoe I have for my beat has around 1500 miles on it and it appears the trans is already starting to slip. Also the first day we had the Tahoe the sound box for the sirens stopped working.

I have driven in them twice, I like the room, very easy to get out if you got to chase someone, drives good....bad points is it's hard to see (2 sets of cages and further back) when you got to drive in reverse for long distance down those narrow alleys or streets, so I forsee lots of fender benders...and if you drive 99 in them, the location of the roof lights are in a tough spot, you have to slightly reach back to get them going and you can't see them.

Its was nice of Jody to ask "his" officers what they thought would be the better choice of police vehicles. Typical Fed thinking that they know better than the lowly patrol officer. "No no no little police man. I'm with the (insert three lettter governemt agency of choice) and I know what's best for you and your little department. Now be a good little toy soldier and bring me my grande half-caff cinnamon soy mocha latte." Jody, please do us ALL a favor and read the writing on the station walls, that is the District stations away from your "think tank" suck holes at HQ, and leave. If the vote of a "few officers" as you put it wasn't enough for you to get the hint, did you not hear the chanting of a few THOUSAND last week!!! I vote for the crown vic...its a great squad car, provided its not beat down with zillions of miles. If the crown vic is properly maintained, it can give excellent service up to 100k, and then go on to run up 400k miles as a cab. Todays holsters and radios are so hard on car seats, maybe kevlar seat covers will be the next police package option.

I hope you don't have a 4WD vehicle Mr. Expert. If you do, why don't you read the owners manual? And if you have read it, dont assume all 4WD vehicles are just like yours.

You only have to worry about burning up the diffs if you have a xfer case that always locks the two driveshafts together in 4WD....Look at the xfer cases that were available in the Jeep Cherokees as an example, the 231 vs. the 242.

I see wagon guys, revolver carrying old guys, still using old good for shit leather holsters with a single fastener and their revolver sticking out to the side for any asshole to grab.

Wagon guys who handle more prisoners than any beat car, with their weapons in easy to grab holsters still leading prisoners into a crowd of shitheads down in the receiving bullpen at 26th and California.

A tragedy just waiting to happen. Fucking old guys just won't spend a few bucks on a decent holster no matter what.

Anyone have a count of how many officers in the past 25 years were killed due to shit holsters? I know of four. And the shit holsters are still being used. Cheap coppers and cheap department that won't mandate security holsters to save lives.

Be careful around those revolvers sticking out to the side.
