Fake Calls; Bogus Calls

Does this sound familiar?
  • Chicago's 311 non-emergency system was designed to take the strain off 911 while speeding response to city service requests.

But City Council Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Allen (38th) says the award-winning system is doing just the opposite: It's slowing down the process because half of the calls turn out to be bogus, and workers waste time generating paperwork used to measure the productivity of city crews.

Sounds kind of like the 911 system, the bogus call hierarchy we end up wasting thousands of hours on daily, and even kind of the like the new rating system with generating paperwork.

On the bright side, supposedly we're down to 6,000 potholes, 5,000 of which are in front of our houses. It's amazing the progress Streets & San have made and we have yet to see a single asphalt truck on our blocks.

"...workers waste time generating paperwork..."

ah, but isn't this precisely the fundamental role of bureaucracy?

I recommend that 311 get a Rapid Response Team, that can quickly check the validity of complaints.

Their only responsibility would be to physically go out and check the request for validity and rate it as verified, not verified or invalid. Only then would you start processing the paperwork.

Pothole requests should remain as a separately functioning program.

No anonymous requests should be taken. Something about putting a name or identity on something makes people less likely to lie.

A simple database should be maintained on the callers/complainers regarding the history and validity of their complaints to identify the chronic bogus callers.

How about not allowing those expired cellphones not to work. Most of these calls come from disconnected cellphones. Punish those who call in the nonsense. The verbal argument, or baby's daddy acting up call where they throw in the guys got a gun to get police there faster.

Last night there were about 10-15 bangers and their girlfriends hanging out in a park by my apartment, drinking and being incredibly loud. I called 311 to make a noise complaint, thinking it did not warrant a call to 911. However, the 311 operator told me just to call 911, which I reluctantly did. Sounds like a misallocation of resources to me.

I don't want to sound like a company guy, but I would not want to get rid of 311 so quick!!! I did not know how important they are both to the working police and the REAL light duty. I was down not as light duty- and saw that they process a ton of paper work for the beat cars. If we got rid of them, the beat car would be so swamped it could and would not function. As for the light duty, yes their are people there with REAL medical issues- I.E. cancer, seriuos injuries, MS and the like. It is nesscesary for them they either got injured working for the PD or while on the PD. The mayor one said this is not a 500 company, if you started to throw your sick and injuried out into the streets the company would fold in a day. There are the medical abusers, and alot of them. On this one, they need to look before you leap.

You know where the pot hold fillers got all that paperwork from ? The Police Department and Tom Byrne. It is just like the nonsense that goes on everyday with the endless paperwork to justify some inside position.

Doesn't help that 95% of the Aldercreatures Fob off their votes complaints by telling them to call 9-1-1 for everything under the damn sun...

while walking my foot beat I asked a pothole crew who was filling holes on an east-west street to do a north-south street that they were just about to cross paths with and they said they can only do the hole on their list. This was two weeks ago. The street is still not done.

311 is to file a report over the phone----911 is for police to respond to the scene

If you have a bona fide reason for calling, don't bve reluctant

How about locking up the mopes who make the calls about "20 males trying to break into my door and they all have guns".

So the mopes think they can get the po-po to the scene faster by saying "they have a gun".

Jokes on them! I don't even step on the gas on those calls. I just let the car cruise there. Fuck 'em!

12:01 PM you do not understand the system--anytime you need the police to physical check something out you call 911--like in your case, a noise disturbance. The dispatchers then prioritize the calls--I believe a noise complaint is a priority 4 call anything in progress is a priority 1 call--all domestics are priority 1 calls--so you have to call 911 for noise complaints.

Few things:

Dept. of Trans handles pot hole repair not streets and sanitation.

The lake front path is the worst it has been since I have been here in Chicago (six years). There are now many stretches where it appears that a repair was underway but the Park District just stopped after the demo work leaving the path barely ridable. On the plus side they did find $2 million in the budget for a soccer field for rich kids in Lincoln Park.

Fake Calls...Bogus Calls?!?!?!

People at CAPS meetings have been saying if you want the Po-leece there for anything just tell 'em it's a man with a gun.

We get dozens of calls a night like that on Zone 10.
