Skimping on Public Safety

Gee, we've been pointing out for over a year that Patrol is shorthanded like nobody's business. Now we see the Tribune found some more places Shortshanks has been "saving" money:
  • Almost 70 percent of the city's elevators weren't inspected in the past year, despite laws that require annual inspections. Some city elevators have not been looked at since 2001.

Perhaps of greater concern is that after an elevator fails an inspection, the city doesn't have a record of whether it was brought back up to code, according to the latest data obtained by the Tribune.
Of course, as soon as safety shortfalls like this are exposed, Daley promises instant reform:
  • Mayor Richard Daley promised Thursday to dramatically increase the use of outside specialists to conduct elevator inspections after a Tribune story revealed that 70 percent of elevators in Chicago hadn't been looked at in the last year.

By law, the city is required to inspect each of its 20,000 elevators every year, but a handful haven't been looked at since 2001, according to the Tribune report.
Ah yes, a "private" contractor (or outside specialist), probably appointed by some "emergency" powers the allow the contract to be awarded without a bid process that then bypasses various safeguards.

So which nephew suddenly got hired by Otis Elevators?

Yup. Check the elevator at 019. Went there to shoot last week and the elevator's inspection tag is several YEARS old. Shocking, isn't it.

It's official.......

Shortshanks is clinically insane.

He is obsessive/compulsive.

He is one scary dude.

He is hoarding money for the Olympics and refuses to see the reality of the world around him.

Gee, I guess since elevators are non-revenue producing, Shortshanks doesn't really give a crap about 'em.

You can be sure though, that gas pumps get inspected regularly, to make sure no one is stiffing the Daley Crime Family out of their City gas tax.

Hmmmmm ? Now that all the parking in the city has been "sold" and the parking meters are coming down in lieu of those parking 'vending' machines, I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that Shortshanks isn't putting them on the elevators. That would be one way that he'd start the elevator inspectors inspecting again.

Oops, I guess I shouldn't give him any ideas !

Don't worry. The Secret Service will come in and tell us what the problem is. Then Daley will surely know which one of his friends should have the contract because they are a minority Irish owned business.

It's all legit. Don't worry.

What do you do with an elected official who lets the roads fall into third world levels of disrepair, fails to plow the streets of snow in the winter and fails to maintain things like bridges and elevators?

Elect him again. Because he's a democrat.

OT - I was walking in the neighborhood and the local CPS had its flag removed from the flag pole and the 2 engineers /maintenance men were adding hooks for a new smaller flag -a Chicago 2016 flag. Later I saw the US flag was up without the other one. I am wondering it had to cost a pretty penny to supply the CPS system with these flags and why would they have them if the winning city hasn't been announced. Mpney well spent again - morons

You know, there's an alternative to City elevator inspections - no elevator inspections.

But, you say, what would keep us safe in our elevators, then?

Answer: we hav a well-developed system for punishing those who don't maintain their property - the tort system. People sue. And insurance companies, who handle the vast bulk of such cases, have a stron incentive to ensure that those they sue maintain their elevators.

Dump the elevator inpectors entirely, I say. It's one place the City can save a llittle dough. It's not something the gov't needs to do.

If our city is going to survive, we need to rethink all of these functions city gov't takes on.

Don't worry! The money will be found when the Olympic city is picked in October and Chicago is not the pick. A lot of money will be freed up and we will get a contract.

Elevator in 015 has NEVER had an inspection. But I really don't want it to get one. I take it up and down about 20x a day and am hoping to win the ghetto lottery someday when I step in from the 2nd and it's still on the 1st floor... :)

We're only charged with enforcing laws, why should our buildings be up to code??

OT =
The listed info is from the Illinois Training and Standards Board website.
It is from the December 2008 board meeting minutes.
Interesting that the State Training Board ONLY APPROVED THE CPD to have two (2) classes of recruits for each of the following years: 2009 / 2010 / 2011.

That means that Daley is only going to hire about 100 recuits each of the next three years. 50 recruits in each class.

BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT COURSES PLANNED FOR
THE NEXT THREE CALENDAR YEARS
CY09 CY10 CY11
2 2 2 Chicago Police Academy
3 3 3 Cook County Sheriff’s Police Academy
2 2 2 Cook Cty Sheriff’s Police Acad. Transfer Course
1 4 4 Illinois State Police Academy
5 5 5 Police Training Institute
2 2 2 Southwestern Police Academy
2 2 2 Suburban Law Enforcement Academy
15 18 18 Totals

The above numbers represent the number of Basic Law Enforcement classes approved by the Board that each academy can offer in a calendar year.

With 25+ years on the CFD, i think its time to start voting for the person Mayor...boss) who will bring the bacon home.I received better contracts under Washington and Sawyer! With Shortshanks, he would make us wait 3-4 years for a contract, only for it to expire 2 months later, after he was re-elected, then we would "starve" for the next 4 years! This is what happenes when someone has been holding the same office for to many years! For the younger guys, make a change in 2011. For me, I will be another retiree leaving this tax hog, the worse/corrupted and infested city in the country.

Alot of taxpayer money was and still is being wasted on lawsuits such as: Illegal contract giveaways, illegal hirings, illegal promotions...etc.

Good luck to the younger guys/woman on the CPD/CFD.
This contract currently being negotiated ( or i should say the contract not being negotiated) probably will be the most important one you will see in your career. Hang in there!

weis get on the air talks about, moving people around to cover areas, and that he isn;t involved in contract talks, but morale is good. the new programs are showing daley's charts on how much the city is under funded, and , he wants non union worker to take 16 days off with no pay and expects the unions to work out a similar deal.
i would like to see the aldermen give back their last 2 raises, i thin k weis and daley shoud also give back 2 months on salary and the need for 50 aldermen cut back to 30, also how about burkes body guards, the unions should bring these items to the table, and if daley want to discuss contract to the news so should we.
