Obama Saves $50 million
- WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration wants to cut almost in half a benefits program for the families of slain police and safety officers.
The president's proposed budget calls for cutting the Public Safety Officers' Death Benefits Program from $110 million to $60 million.
The Justice Department insisted no one would lose benefits.
No one would lose any benefits if the number of officers killed in the line of duty remained stagnant or decreased. Which doesn't seem to be happening in 2009:
- The group [National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund] said killings of police officers are up 21 percent so far in 2009, compared to the same period the year before.
Change. Catch the fever.

My initial thought is "OH NO YOU'RE NOT". And then I thought about Washington DC and government bureaucrats and how they love to spend money.
Half a million dollars here and a half a million dollars there and pretty soon you're talking about some REAL money.
Millions of dollars are spent every year for office remodeling, luxury car leases, wrought iron fences, elite private club memberships, nepotism in employment, no-bid contracts, kickback schemes etc, etc, etc.
I remember a couple years ago,a district CAPS Lt was trying to cut down the amount of money spent for poorly attended CAPS meetings. At the end of the year he was chastised by the DC for not spending the money. He was told to go spend it so their budget wouldn't be lowered for the next budget year. It's such a crazy set of rules in a bureaucracy.
Anyway, maybe the Public Safety Officers' Death Benefits Program is overfunded and needs to be realigned. Fine. But NOT at the expense of the families of slain police and safety officers ! ! !

The Public Safety Officers' Death Benefits Program also helps officer's who are permanently disabled and their families. With all the read tape, it takes up to year or even longer for the benefits to get approved. I am sure they will screw some PO because the President wants to save money. Save money some where else. How about that pork belly spending you were supposed to stop.
how about obama cuts his security detail in half the next time he comes to chicago-- since he is so well loved by the masses their is no need for this waste of taxpayers money--

How timely this 50% cut is to the law enforcement community. Just as we begin to honor our fallen officers during the month of may. obama...are you listening? You sir, are an a#@hole ! line of duty deaths are up 18% from last year at this time, with a yearly total of 46. This has been a deadly year already for Law Enforcement. Most notably the incidents in Pittsburgh and Oakland. However it was the Oakland incident that outraged me as I saw the monsters supporting the murderer Lovell Mixon. May he rot in hell. Because of this, I have begun a fundraiser for the 10 fatherless children of these four slain men. I had great success at the Springfield Memorial this week selling "Support Oakland" t-shirts. I would think that the real issue for conservatives would be that there is a federal program at all for fallen officers. Wouldn't a state or local program be more in line with conservative values?

The article says no one will lose their benefit. They may make the requirements more stringent. There is no decrease in deaths and injures to P.O.’s and F.F.’s in Chicago. What are they talking about?

As you may have read, the president’s proposed 2010 federal budget lowers the estimated costs of the federal Public Safety Officers Benefit (“PSOB”) program from $110 million a year to $60 million a year.
THIS IS ONLY THEIR ESTIMATE OF WHAT THE PROGRAM WILL COST IN 2010. THE FEDERAL DEATH BENEFIT FOR OFFICERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IS NOT BEING REDUCED!!
By law, the monetary benefit that the program provides to the survivors of officers killed in the line of duty is $315,746 (for deaths on or after October 1, 2008). By law, this amount is indexed for inflation, so it is actually expected to GO UP later this year, October 1, 2009. This amount is also the benefit for officers who were not killed, but suffered catastrophic injury in the line of duty. Because these amounts are set by pre-existing law passed by Congress, the budget estimate does not affect them. These statutory amounts remain the same.
Now what happens if the president’s budget estimate is wrong, and more families than anticipated are entitled to this benefit? They will still be entitled, and Congress will appropriate additional money beyond the estimate.
NAPO has been one of the strongest supporters of the PSOB program from day one. We led the battle to establish the benefit in the first place, to increase the benefits amount, to make it tax-free, and to index it for inflation. Suffice it to say that we will always remain fully committed to ensuring the protection of the survivors of our fallen brother and sister officers. We will never, ever stand by idly in the face of threats to this or any similar program. Please contact our Washington office with any questions or concerns about this issue.
