Dear God, we don't ask for decency in Chicago or Illinois politics. We don't even ask for intelligence. But is it wrong to ask for something less than slapstick?

I hope so.
To everyone who wrote hoping for the collapse of the Sun-Times, these Higgins drawings and the 2016 Olympics Rick Telander article are two reasons we need healthy major newspapers in this City.
For as much as we don't like the sometimes brutal and unsympathetic articles regarding police, we need the type of coverage of political leaders that only the newspapers seem capable of handling well.
The mere fact that Daley hates the print journalists should be a clue to us all that they are necessary and we should support both the Sun-Times and Tribune as best we can, even if we sometimes get infuriated at their coverage of certain events and individuals.
Finally, it seems they are catching on to what has been written on this blog for a long time, that the Daley Crime Family has been riding roughshod over all aspects of this city treating it as if it is their own bank account.
Let's hope Patrick Fitzgerald has Richard M. Daley et al squarely in his sights. I will kiss my wife and take her dancing on the day Daley gets indicted. Oh what a happy day that will be! To be alive to see stuttering prick in the camera's glare on indictment day!

On 01 Mar 09, the city managed to staff all five watches of VSEP at no cost for salaries.
[for all you civilians out there, this is the deal where police officers work their day-off for straight time, doing security on the CTA buses and trains. You know, the dorkey looking red/white and blue squad cars]
After no one got paid for this day when the check arrived in April, I inquired and was told that due to a new computer system, no one got paid. Assurances were made that the day would be on next months check. Not great, but not the end of the world, guess it happens.
Fast forward to the next month, you guessed it, no pay.
Called the FOP, they claim it is being addressed.
I remember the day I worked as being a cold March day, on which we wrote three ANOVs and some contact cards.
My partner and I
raised cash for the city, that off set the cost of having us work, while preventing "crime and disorder".
She was planning to use the check towards paying for a birthday outing with her kid.
I was, as usual, going to throw mine towards the ever present tuition bill.
Gee J-FED, you don't need a survey to figure out why morale is in the toilet. The department has made an art form of figuring out new ways to piss the working police off.
Hey here's an idea. Since the department is taking inside people that are "unnecessary" and putting them back out on the street, maybe the Public Transit Section timekeeper, should visit the 003rd district and fill one of those openings.

Why wont the Mayor and Aldermen cut their pay. Let them turn back the hands of time and reduce their pay for the better part of the city. Why are they asking the men and women of Chicago to take a cut. Most of us working in Chicago are the back bone of this city. Picking up garbage and cleaning the streets is what we do everyday. The Mayor and Aldermen work part time and collect some of the highest salaries in the country. Why do we need so many Aldermen? Lets cut them in half until times here in Chicago get better. Lay offs should start with the Aldermen!

That only works, to unseat the incumbent, in a one on one contest.
With more than one challenging candidate, it just means that your votes will be split, ie., the very same way Washington managed to get elected the first time.
What it takes to unseat an incumbent is for a single challenging candidate to get close to all of the votes not cast for the incumbent.
And that's the rub, getting as many voters as possible, who recognize that the incumbents are the ones that we need to get rid of, to all vote for a single challenging candidate in any given contested office.
Since most citizens hold the opinion that it matters who they specifically vote for more than it matters who they are voting against, all the incumbents have to do is ensure that there are two or more challenging candidates in every election.
And, since the vast majority of city voters consider voting for any party other than the dems as tantamount to heresy, the only shot we have at ousting the incumbents is in the democratic party primaries.
Hence the dems routine practice of putting up multiple shill candidates whenever any seriously threatening single candidate appears on the scene.
There's a voting strategy that's been posted on the Reader's blog comments every so often, one that could work to knock out the incumbents in their own primary, but it, too requires that the voters care enough about ousting incumbent idiots to use it when they vote. And it's nature is one that runs counter to most citizens natural conception of how, and for whom, they choose to cast their votes.
So, if the primary goal is to oust incumbents, regardless of who specifically is replacing them, then the counter intuitive voting method described on the Reader's CloutCity blog's comments can achieve that goal, if enough citizens apply the voting method.
If, however, the primary goal is to elect desirable challenging candidates to replace the currently undesirable crop of incumbents, than it will require sufficiently desirable candidates and tons of do-ray-me to promote said candidates, both tough nuts to crack, though not as tough these days of our collective discontent as in days gone by.
That's why I've suggested the formation of a Blue Party Ticket, drawn from the rank ad file of the CPD and CFD.
It's now worth a shot more than it has been at any other time in our city's history.
The IOC knows what's going on in Chicago, they can see all the trouble afoot.

What's ridiculous is that the Mayor states the City has a 350 million rainy day fund tucked away YET, he asks city workers to take up to 20 days off UNPAID when that won't put a significant dent in his shortfall.
What I want to know is WHAT QUALIFIES as a rainy day? The fact that the economy has tanked and we are taxed and fee'd up the wazzu is a RAINY DAY.
Apparently the Mayor is saying that City workers, their economic condition, their families, food on their table, their children's education and receiving the salaries that they were hired for is not important enough to use the "Rainy Day" fund!
