Homicides Down by 30

Interesting take on the various news outlets. We started by reading BreakingNews:
  • The number of homicides in Chicago decreased nearly 13 percent through June and the city saw a greater than 10 percent drop in overall crime, compared to the same time period last year, Chicago police announced today.

Chicago ended June with fewer than 200 homicides since the beginning of the year for the first time in recent memory, police said. Between 2004 and 2008, Chicago experienced its lowest five-year totals for homicides since the early 20th century, and the city is below that pace this year.
We had to read the whole article twice, but guess what was missing? Something like an actual number of killings might have helped. All BreakingNews would say is "under 200." How childish. We had to go to the Sun Times to get the actual number:
  • There were 199 homicides in the first six months of the year in the city, compared to 229 from January through June of last year.
Was that so hard? It's like pulling teeth. A few more tidbits from the press conference:
  • Weis admitted that the wet, cold spring may have contributed to the decline in crime, but he noted that Chicago has also seen several fair weather weekends. He said he doesn’t like to use weather as an excuse — good or bad.
Even though the New York Times has finally noticed that weather has a measurable effect on crime, that's not good enough for J-Fed.
  • He said police are using intelligence better and “putting our folks where they need to be.” So far this year Police have confiscated 4,031 guns — nearly one gun every hour.
And we're going to go out on a limb and say that's about a 1,000 less than previous years, 1,500 less than in some other years. We're also going to speculate that part of the reduction in crime is people aren't waiting around an hour-and-a-half to fill out a report. If it isn't reported, it never happened. We haven't noticed a let up in RAP-backlogs yet.

And missing from these reports is the number of people shot. As we related, 132 people were shot in Chicago last week. That's close to "one shot an hour" to go along with J-Fed's nearly "one gun an hour" comment. And that seems more than a little on the high side.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Their numbers games are quite amusing. Easy to fool a stupid population. And we do have the dumbest in the country.

I have to ask this question after watching another anti-police report on Channel 7. Do they still hire off duty POs to accompany them to the ghetto because they are too scared to go without armed officers??? If so, why don't we boycott them then they will never step foot in the ghetto to interview these lying dogs. (I know its a side job and guys need the money, but screw them)

Some day the media will figure out that it doesn't matter how many homicides there are, just the number of shooting incidents. The police don't decide who lives and who dies, the paramedics and doctors do. The fact is that shooting incidents are higher than last year. In spite of all the cops in 11 and 15 and the southside. The band-aid won't hold for much longer.

As I stated in another post, CNN reported that Christ Hospital (The only trauma center covering the south side of the city) has a 96% survival rate for trauma patients. Christ Hospital along with CFD paramedics are saving these bangers life, in so much that Christ is now expanding the ER!! I understand the medical oath these professionals take, but at what expense.

Last Tuesday the city was 60 Agg. Batt. firearm, ahead of 2008.
Could the paramedics and ER Docs have anything to do with the decress in DOA's?

I wonder if that will be a big comfort for the families of all the CPS students "alledgedly" shot dead on the streets.

Maybe if someone would release the number of guns confiscated at Taste, then the info would be reported. So far, that's not being released. Same with number of shootings per week. Used to be the press had access to the First Deputy sheet, which listed all shootings, stabbings, etc., and the numbers could be counted up. Now the incidents aren't being released, so they aren't reported.

if they wanna play games with the numbers, so should we.

instead of pointing out the number of total shootings are up, we should also be pushing the point that the number of homicides are down. the FOP should be all over it- "everyday the men and women of the cpd work hard and their effort is reflected in the decrease in homicides. the dedication shown by these fine men and women surely deserve to rewarded with a fair contract, and a BIG raise!"

Last time HQ sent numbers out regarding How areas how Areas are doing:
Area Two was down 18 homicides, 6 aggravated battery incidents compared to last year's. This was on last week...
It makes me want to leave my unit and go work in Area Two.
You guys in Area Two are really kicking A##. I know lots of police shootings.. Congratulations and be carefully. I think the numbers are down due to one reason only:
PO's dedication regardless of the known pressure that we are all facing.

I just hope that our supervisors recognize the fact that there are still lots of good and hard working officers out there, not only in Area Two but all over this heat city; and it's about that time we get a fair contract..

I really do hope the urders are down, as well as any other crimes, thank God, but it's not like the new numbers are anything to rave about. There's still far too much crime, savagry, and political corruption in Chicago, and for the big money all the city leadership gets paid, it's an abysmal performance by them all. This is still a way to dangerous place, a few more or less crimes doesn't mean we aren't out of control as a civilized society here in Chi-Town. Police Officers are under-paid, overworked, treated like crap by the politicians, news media, and our own H.Q. management, yet we still have improved crime statistics, a far better performance than our Teachers, and other City Departments, yet we are the ONLY ones without a decent Contract and working 2 jobs to try to give our families all they need, while the Greed Daley and Company play games with our lives and the lives of our families.
