Police Shooting

  • Police shot and critically wounded a man in the West Side's Lawndale neighborhood Thursday night after shots were allegedly fired at officers.

About 9:30 p.m., police fired shots and struck someone in the 1900 block of South Christiana Avenue, according to Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Mark Payne.

The person, reportedly a man, was shot in his back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to fire officials.

Shots were fired by and at police at the Christiana location, and someone was wounded, police News Affairs Officer David Banks said.

Someone else was wounded in 011 Thursday morning, too. Coverage on that was scant, but appears to have been the aftermath of a robbery that an Area 5 team happened upon.

The assaults seem to be more and more brazen lately. Anyone have the stats for Police shootings?

SCC: I have no idea how many police shootings occurred for the year, but this has to be a record year.

The early 1990s were wild, but this year it seems there are two to three shootings a week. I think Shaved said there were THREE in one day.

Everybody stay safe.

The Obama administration and mayor Daley have plans to announce a 700 trillion dollar project aimed at re-educating urban youths and adults how to properly cross the street. Mayor Daley said that Chicago will be a host city to experimental off street practice intersections were CPS students and community residents can practice crossing the street. President Obama praised Chicago as leading the way in the re-education of a lost art. He also stated that the original plan to rebuild all street lights to add "hibbity jibbity" along with walk and don't walk was just to expensive. The term hibbity jibbity coined by the Obama administration refers to a pedestrians slow shuffle and lingering in traffic for no apparent reason.

July, 1934. It was my third year OTJ during the Great Depression.

We knew that John Dillinger was taking the two ladies to either the Marbro on Madison St. or the Biograph on Lincoln Avenue. Our CI, Anna Sage would be wearing a red dress.

G-Man Melvin Purvis was calling the shots. Our CPD stakeout team got stuck with the Marbro on the West Side while the G-men had all the fun at the Biograph.

Seriously, I'd give "Public Enemies" four stars. Great film.

This is why you don't trust reporters. It seems that the Washington Post got caught attempting to set up meetings with journalists, Obama cabinet members and lobbyists after a lobbyist turned over a flyer advertising this little get together.

I'm so surprised police shootings continue to go relatively unnoticed by the media. After all, if the savages will not hesitate to shoot at the police, they will not hesitate to shoot citizens. Doesn't anybody get that? Everyone should be alarmed because this behavoir is strong evidence of a growing trend.

In regards to the shooting in 010 it was also handled well, but for the car that tried to go down on lunch in the minutes after the shooting, I know the sgt pulled you aside and scolded you but if you really want to be the lazy dogs you always are at least go down on a traffic stop via the pdt.

It is called Justifiable Homicide - The medical examiner simply classifies how the person died......gunshot therefore homicide - since the definition of homicide is when one person dies as a result of the actions of another....The medical examiner does not determine whether the homicide is justifiable or not; that is the job of the police department. So, once the ME determines the cause of death to be a homicide, the police department then classifies it as a justifiable homicide because the officer was justified in using deadly force - case closed.

Don't get all upset over terminology. It is just a legal process that must be followed. Furthermore, don't get all upset over the use of the term "victim". He may have been the offender who pointed a gun at police and he may be the offener who committed a home invasion, but he is still the victim of a gunshot and thank God for that!!

In the same day that two innocent little girls are being buried because they were the victims of the INSANITY and total disregard for human life that's out there, because of the emphasis and sensationalism "for the sake of a story" at the expence of diminishing the integrity of officers that put their lives on the line and do this job everyday. The public is again questioning the actions of a decorated officer that took this job for the same reason we all did, to help in some way. What officer do you know that starts his tour each day thinking "I think I'll kill someone today?" We're not out there to twiddle our fuckin fingers, we're out there to serve and protect, and the media can put whatever spin and emphasis it wants to on the facts of what actually happened. The truth is: that officer was doing what he was sworn to do. We don't pick and choose what senario we're going to be involved in. Crimes are being committed all over this city, we do our best to DO OUR BEST. These two girls are just the latest Two. How many innocent victims have been killed at the hands of these gun wielding thugs. People better wake the fuck-up and realize that "WE ARE AT WAR" and the police are not the enemy. The media would rather sensationalize and highlight a perspective that totally underminds ALL of our best effort, than to make their focus the criminal acts of the ever-increasing number of thugs out there. WAKE UP! There are the GOOD guys and the BAD guys. Every person in this city has to choose, there's no more middle groung.

Easy Cowboy. The legal definition of a homicide is that of an unnatural death caused at the hands of another. This does not mean that it is a criminal matter, solely a death which occured at the hands of another. Hence, if you were a civilian and slayed a home invader that was about to cause great bodily harm to another you would be in the clear, likewise for the Police, while acting under the office in which a law enforcement officer is certified and sworn too, they have the right by federal standards to slay the criminal who is under the commission of a felony in which the life of another is in peril i.e. he pointed a gun at a police officer who has identified his office and given lawful orders to drop the weapon and surrender, as is the case in question. Now I don't want to make your head swin cowboy but whatever the M.E.'s office states counts for shit. The M.E. does NOT have the legal authority to determine if a death, by any means, is a criminal matter, only the real POOOlice has the power. I tell you this as a south side Detective who is in his second decade as a Dick, as well as one who has addressed this issue with the M.E. and won, on more than one occasion. So open up a brewski and let the investigation take its course, which will be a Justifiable Homicide.

There is no negative connotation within the definition itself. It is a mere statement of fact.

The above poster nailed it SO on the head.

More liberal nonsense ABC7 is dishing out, as usual. Unidentified drunken shithead (with his face blurred out?? - WTF!!) rambling on incoherently - PULEESE.

Did anybody else notice ABC7's so-called "reporter" appeared deathly afraid of his surroundings and about ready to piss himself while interviewing Pookie? It seems he forgot about balanced reporting and verifying anybody's credibility before airing their statements.

The liberal "reporters" in these situations, of course, are under intense time pressure. They need to hurry up and grab a quick soundbite (calculated to stir up some shit with the police haters and make their liberal bosses happy), and then quickly flee the hood before the savages overturn and set fire to the station's expensive ENG van and rob & beat their naive punk asses.

MEANINGLESS, INFLAMMATORY BULLSHIT BEING SPEWED BY CLUELESS, LIBERAL PUSSIES OVER OUR PUBLIC AIRWAVES. SO SAD WHAT IT'S COME TO IN THIS ONCE GREAT CITY.

I'm not sure, but could it possibly be because the killing of one person by another person is called a homicide? This one just happens to be justifiable.

I don't disagree, but allow me to add a little bit to your 3rd suggestion, since it is almost impossible to get rid of the lawsuits outright.

3.5) What if the FOP funded a small group (2-4) of lawyers who vigorously sought civil actions against people who file bogus claims against the CPD? The burden of proof in a criminal proceeding is too high to make criminal perjury charges stick (and thus be a deterrent), but as you know the burden at the Daley Center or Dirksen is much lower.

I think you might agree with me that people would play the lottery less if there was the chance of an actual downside (instead of losing = status quo).
