Line in the Sand?

  • Three hold-out unions with 450 layoffs hanging in the balance—Teamster 726, Laborers 1001 and AFSMCE Council 31—are standing in the way of a two-year deal on cost-cutting concessions to save the jobs of 1,504 city of Chicago employees targeted for layoffs.

    Mayor Daley refused today to say what he would do if the unions don't get on board by the July 15 deadline.

    But Daley hinted strongly that layoffs would be confined to those three union locals.

It used to be that a contract meant a contract. But nowadays, Daley is forcing the unions to reopen the talks and take a beating in the re-negotiations. And if a contract is no longer binding on all parties, what's to stop the runaway train that results?

We're going to hope these unions stick to their guns and force Daley's hand. They have a trump card we don't - the ability to strike. And everyone will see how city services are affected. It may well be that too many of these jobs are actually layers of waste. It may also be that years, even decades of fiscal mismanagement are coming home to roost and voters might finally wake up to the fact that Shortshanks and his merry band of thieves have been plundering for far too long.

If the city was really in a bind thats one thing, but, fuck this lying asshole. He has a shit-load of city money that he thinks is his to do with what he wants. The unions are making a big mistake by not ordering every member to walk off the job now. The king is promising these fools everything under the sun when (if) he gets the olympics.

I keep saying, attorneys for these unions need to force Daley and the city to open its financial books.

Prove to the employees and the citizens that there is no money.

We all know that he's got a gazillion bucks in tifs.

I still do not understand how he can stand there and talk about layoffs and out of the other side of his mouth push for the Olympics.

Is there no one that has the balls to call him out on this?

Daley just lies and lies and lies about the cities money and the media buys it. On one hand he says we have nothing then he tells the olympic committee that we have the money. He hides money for his special projects and lets his friends and family waste it on bad deals. He says the olympics won't cost anymore than expected, but millinium park, O'hare, the garage etc. etc. all went way over budget. All of daley's deals are fucked up and no one calls him on it. Daley is the KING OF CORRUPTION!!!

I hope these unions hold their ground. A contract is a contract and should not be broken for any reason. The mayor is bullying all of us and it needs to stop. I don't want to see anyone lose their job but the reality it that if unions give in now who knows what Daley will ask from them next year? This is not a one time thing.

The city has violated these contracts for two years so far and plan on violating it next year too. That's why they need the unions blessing. When does it stop?

Remember, it's more than salaries at stake here, it is also pension contributions that will be shrunk, by the worker earning less and by the city having to match that contribution....oh and that workers pension is going to be less than he was hired and contracted to receive.

Why do city workers get shafted and have their contracts shit on but sheister companies that have multimillion dollar contracts with the city get to raise their fees ridiculously. Case in point, the body removal company, the parking meter company, I could go on but why bother.

The mayor is just a bully to city workers. He said we were clockwatchers. How stupid of him.

Unions DO NOT BE MOVED BY HIS LIES. Something bigger is at stake. Make the city open their books.

How much do fireworks cost every week? Why couldn't Daley cut that?
How much does the Taste cost the city? Why not cut that.
How much do all the tests in millinium park cost all summer?
How much do the fire works at Navy Pier costs each night?
How much do city attorneys costs to continue to settle on bs rather than win a case for the good of the city and set a precedent to keep people from trying to win the ghetto lottery?
How much does the mayors vacation trips cost us?
How much money do we lose on all the city services that have been sold off to private companies?

Because the city government has got themselves in a hole, rather than cut any of this waste or retain our revenue services the city feels it's okay to force city workers to pay for his mess and refund our own pensions that his nephew stole. I hope the unions don't fold. I really do.

Surprise, surprise, not every civilian is a clout person. That is like saying every sworn is a clout person. Civilians still support families and perform necessary work with the department. The mayor changed the incentive package. He wants more than simple furlough days and included sick days. This amounts to a pay cut of 10% plus reduced medical benefits. This is a major hit for every civilian. Even future raises are gone. I can only imagine what he will do with the sworn contract.

AFSCME members have a no strike clause in their contract. Also, 80% of the membership voted regarding whether or not to accept the city's final offer, which includes 46 unpaid days over a span of 2 years. It turns out that 78% voted against accepting that deal just to "save" jobs until, maybe, this November. There's no guarantee of no layoffs over the two years. It's not worth losing so much for so little.

I HATE TO SAY THIS buy the City has the upper hand no matter what due to the lack of "other" employment these workers have.

What if the City lets the strike go for a couple of months, most city employees live from check to check.

THE ONLY possible scenario is if ALL unions in the city walk off the job, including POLICE & FIRE. The only problem is "WE" can't strike and "WE" really could have the city by the balls.

NO ONE "PUT DOWN" THE FIRE STRIKE IN 1982.

The fire fighters had the balls to strike, but then started sabotaging and damaging the firehouses and equipment and harassed the fire bosses and non-striking firemen who remained on duty.

That prompted then-Mayor Jane Byrne to defend the fire houses with PO's 24-7 and send us on fire runs to protect the working firemen. It caused a rift between us and them, but also made us heroes in Mayor Byrnes eyes, something not seen before or since. All the other Mayors, especially the Stuttering Prick, treat us like doormats, chauffeurs and butlers.

BUT AGAIN, WE DID NOT "PUT DOWN" THE FIRE STRIKE.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? Our 'mission' never changes. We are to kneel down to The Mayor and any other elected official, scurry around like lab rats for HIS amusement and do it all in the face of his sheer contempt toward us AND do it without a contract...

THEN we are to ignore all of his organized crime connections, illegal backroom deals, scandalous corruption, nepotism, favoritism, entitlement, lying, cheating, stealing and downright contemptible rudeness and bend over and beg, "Thank you sir, may I have another?".

Oh, and we must be subservient and beholden to his brilliant choices of "leaders" overseeing the Police Department:

1) An indicted, corrupt, Federal wire wearing criminal alderman who 'runs us' as the head of the city council's Police and Fire Committee;

2) A Superintendent who prior to being hired, had NEVER worked as a Police Officer in his life and whose many decisions have proved that;

3) An Ass. Supt whose condo was being used to secret a known gang member, illegal narcotics and illegal guns "without her knowledge" and became the target of a Police search warrant;

4) An UNSWORN civilian Mayoral puppet, (MIKE MASTERS - MIKE MASTERS - MIKE MASTERS), who has ILLEGALLY carried a concealed weapon and impersonated a Police Officer and thwarted all attempts to answer to these allegations by IAD;

5) Crump-Hales, speaks for itself;

6) Mealer, speaks for itself;

7) Walsh, speaks for itself;

8) Brown, speaks for itself;

etc etc etc

What? Are you new to this Department and City that you don't know the rules?

With the city sitting on 1 BILLION in T.I.F. money, 1.8 BILLION for the Skyway, 1.1 BILLION for the parking meters it is hard sell to tell their members to take days off w/o pay. Plus the city got to keep the 150 million from the failed sale of Midway. That’s over 4 BILLION dollars if you want to keep track. The other unions have the right to strike. If the teamsters all took their furlo days now the garbage would stack up and the public would go nuts.

It is time for these guys to force the city to open up all of the financial books. An independent auditor like the GBO or IG could be the trick. Remember our arbitrator forced the city to open the book on health care. The retiree’s cost went down about $53 a month and they got rebate checks for the over charges. The arbitrator set the cost of our health care at a percentage which the city considered a huge loss. That arbitrator has never been picked for any other work here by the city other than the grievances stemming from the contract he settled. He will never hear anther case here in this city.

Just imagine if ever city expenditure was gone over with a fine tooth comb. Everyone just go a water bill in the mail that went up an average of $12 from 6months ago. Consider the Vanecko lease deal was a major factor in that raise. That’s a Daley Family Tax. The B of Ed. is a sink hole, Toddler is the most inept politician there is, and Quinn wants to raise the state income tax 66%. Enough is enough! These guys should not picket City Hall they should picket shortshanks house!

A neighbor of mine works for Midway airport. He is a maintenence guy. He works for the city and is union. According to him there is a "no-strike" clause in their contract. According to him, if they strike, Daley can fire them all and hire all new personnel. Why in the name of Pete would a union that is not bound by federal mandate prohibiting strikes let a clause like that into the contract!?! It makes no sense. I would assume that all city related unions have a similar "no-strike" clause. Think about this hypothetical...
Firemen go on strike, Daley fires them all because they are in breech of contract and federal law. How does he replace that work force in a timely fashion as to not endanger the public? Can't be done. Now, the janitors at Midway go on strike, Daley fires them all in breech of contract. You can hire almost anyone and replace the entire workforce almost instantly, probably with all his neice's and nephew's. We are screwed!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Apparently you haven't been on the job long enough.
The arbitrator DID NOT SET THE COST OF HEALTH CARE AT A PERCENTAGE.

That was a contract negotiation that the FOP lost a number of years ago.
Back then, (and I don't remember the year - late 90's) Daley started to negotiate with the civilian unions first and started with AFSCME. AFSCME negotiated a percentage of their salary would go toward health care.
Before that all city employees were paying a flat rate each pay period.
Once AFSCME voted to approve that contract the rest of the unions followed suit.
The FOP and Local 2 were the last to "unions" to settle their contracts.
I was vehemently opposed to that portion of the contract knowing that every time we got a raise the health care premium would go up.
Well, lo and behold here we are.
Everytime we get a raise = the health care deduction goes up!

Also that it contributed to the murder of PO Francis. Here's a link to the article:

Daley will not prove that there isn't any money unless you go to 'Interest Arbitration' again and have the arbitrator order him to open the books and prove it.

When everybody stops doing shit, and takes several days sick leave, maybe somebody will get the message.

I only have six years on, and still work, but that should be a headline on the blog. Outstanding!

In 1980 the FFs went on strike for a contract [collective bargaining] and started this now statewide procedure. We didn't go back to work until the city agreed to not fire or major discipline anyone. A contractual agreement.
Daley will not prove that there isn't any money unless you go to 'Interest Arbitration' again and have the arbitrator order him to open the books and prove it.
I know. I was there too. AND, we had a great and respected leader, Frank Muscare.
Get together guys and gals. The CFD and more city enployees than you might think are with you.

Amen. No givebacks from FOP. None. Not ever.

Arbitration!

Fuck Daley! Fuck him now, fuck him tomorrow, fuck him always!

Anyone else see Avis Lavelle on television this morning defending her parking meter company? She stated that they are helping financially for this, that and the other AND the Mayor's "rainy day" fund. What in the fuck is that? If this isn't time for a "rainy day" fund what in the hell is?

Can government have a savings account? Aren't they supposed to use the taxpayers money in real time? Because if he has any extra, I want mine back. I have tuition and bills to pay!

O.k. thePAYBACK MACHINE is about to wack the most ARROGANT CLOUT BABY ON THE NORTHSIDE.A few months ago a former DEPUTIES IGNORANT SON(J.B.) in a very slow dist,024tried to blow off a serious incident involving very at risk senior citizens, being abused by their own daughter.Par for the course it was below him to do actually have to do policework.The LITTLE IRISH PRINCE then dumped it off on the responding C.F.D. units.When the shit hit the fan the "LITTLE PRINCE" ripped into the nurses,doctors etc,and his bosses tried to make it go away.Well loudmouth, "MR MY ASSHOLE COUSIN IS SO TIGHT WITH THE MAYOR".

I am the person who makes the choices for the K-9 UNIT

and knew you back in AUSTIN when you played police, for the standard bosses kids requisite 6 months in the ghetto,and I guess YOU HAVEN'T CHANGED and guess who's sister was a nurse? Oh yeah by the way, I guess you'll have to go back to working your 4 hr days with "a bunch of retards" in 024.P.S. stop having a bunch of old red faced hacks calling me to get their guy JIMMY in,anyone over 12 should not have an "IMMY" on the end of their name.

WOW!!! I hope some boss with rank actually reads this and takes appropriate action against this "person who calls the shots". We have enough vindictave people out here in this Department. I wonder why morale is in the basement.

Lighten up, Francis.

If the laborers union goes out on strike, this City will be up to its ears in garbage and disease within two weeks. And if they do it right, they will sabotage the garbage trucks before going out on strike, which will prevent Dickhead from hiring scabs to take over. Two weeks worth of rotting garbage pilling up in alleys will get the voters attention real fast...

See those garbage trucks?
They collect garbage from each and every home on their route.

MAKE HIM OPEN THE BOOKS!

The citizens deserve an account of where their money is going!

OPEN THE BOOKS!

Let's get some independent accountants to check the books out. If it cannot be done, then it should be voted upon. The taxpayers should demand it. It's their money. OUR money.

I know that guy in 024 J.B.and you nailed it right on the head!He is without a doubt one of the laziest,ARROGANT DO NOTHINGS,I've ever met.I've known him since 018 and laugh when he starts telling his "WESTSIDE WAR STORIES'.Since day one his day consists of doing whatever he's wanted to do,and LETTING SOMEBODY ELSE DO THE REST.To this day he has his 2 personnels(1 1/2 hrs a piece) his lunch (2hrs) and his nap or computer time,which leaves him with about 15 minutes to actually do what the rest of the "retards" without a DEPUTY DADDY have to do.P.S. Even his COUSIN TOMMY HATES HIM and would agree to everything said.The only way I'd want him on a canine team is to fit a collar around his neck,he is a text book example of what is wrong with the dept.
