No Duh

  • The not-in-my-back-yard syndrome associated with power plants and waste dumps may also apply to red-light cameras in Illinois.

A new Tribune/WGN-TV poll finds most voters favor the traffic control devices--in concept. But they don't want the cameras in their own neighborhoods.

The statewide survey also found broad skepticism about a common refrain echoed by municipal officials: Promoting safety is the paramount goal of camera installations.
Safety? It's been a revenue generator from day one. That's why they're looking at so-called "Stop Sign Cameras" as the next big revenue generator. You can generate million in revenue and not have to pay some copper to sit on a sign or play the intersection along with all the attendant costs (insurance, court, paper tickets, etc.)

We imagine some ambitious politico might win some votes campaigning against the cameras and advocating for more police officers.

Sorry, O.T., when is that goof Lt., in 025, going to be dumped for giving the go ahead on that Elgin fiasco? To any downtown people that might be monitoring this, please get your heads out of your asses and move him somewhere else, before he leads another fuckup and more cops will have to take suspension days.

it is a rule violation for an officer to "sit" on a stop sign but ok for a "camera" to basically sit on an intersection--- how pathetic and petty this city has become, more, more, more at a time when folks are really hurting--- missions all designed to generate revenue--- no wonder people are not as supportive of the police as they have been in the past----

Next will be the "Chicago Chip" embedded in City Stickers and it will transmit the owners info instantly to Parking Boxes which will double as receivers. If you don't pay up within, say 3 minutes, it will kick out a parking ticket and mail it to you.

Or maybe the info chip can be embedded in license plates. No where to hide then, That ought to solve shortshanks' budget gap.

That Parking Meter debacle will prove to be the single worst move of shortshanks miserable career as mayor. I see formerly jammed commercial areas with parking strips now half empty of cars during the day. People are going elsewhere. There is a paradigm shift going on as to where people park and shop and it is caused by none other than Richard M. Daley.

The stuttering prick will prove that it is possible to kill the golden goose. I used to throw money in the meters while in my private car, no more. I haven't been ticketed yet either.

How many red-light camera citations have been non-suited because the violator were the bodyguards for Alderman Burke?

note: His city vehicle bears license plates issued to the police department and citations issued to public safety vehicles are automatically non-suited.

I am ambivalent about using cameras or other non-human means of enforcing traffic laws. But in the end, I have come to the conclusion that for the most part routine enforcement traffic laws is almost entirely about revenue. Maybe it is best if police are not involved in it. It will give them more time to deal with the thugs out there. At least one would hope so.

How about what they have in other cities, computerized traffic systems which move everything in the fastest and safest mode possible. NO, there is no money to be made there, the city would loose money because of all the gasoline taxes that people would save.

Chicago might loose it's status as the most stessful fucked up city in the U.S.

First! The City put's the Parking Meter's into the hands of a private company who can not enforce or cite the law because they are not the Police or City-employed.

The City is now letting a private company operate and enforce the collection's on Redlights as well without even a chance to rebuttle or argue and plead your case.

Now your just GUILTY without a trial regardless if the light's are working properly or not.

The City will never let you know if they are having Redlight problems because it would cost them and the private company money and giving you a chance to dispute it in a court of law is not an option!

So just payup and shut the f..kup is what they want us to do!!

As much as I hate the cameras, I would be ok with them if they simply put the count down timer on the traffic lights. It's funny how many ppl freakout as soon as the light turns yellow simply because there is a camera there. But at other intersections, where there is a count down time, people usually start to slow down accordingly.

Also, do we need them on every corner? Really???

9/08/2009 12:54:00 AM

Let's hope you are no Oliver Stone. Stone is a left wing nut job that rewrites history as he sees fit.

That's part of the problem today. People hear and see versions of today's and yesterdays history as presented by media outlets with their own agenda. It may be political, it may be for profit, but it is an agenda. NOBODY presents "just the facts". Maybe they feel that the public is too stupid to make the right call. Maybe they just like manipulating things. It's probably all about the money. Make no mistake. It always comes down to money.

People, especially the young, are constantly being manipulated by what they are and are not told. This is the lesson that should be taught first.

@@@@@
According to an article I read about a month ago in the ST, Chicago has the shortest yellow lights of any place in the state. It helps them nab a disproportionate # of suburbanites who are expecting 5-6 seconds instead of 3.

Takes us out of the equation. Nobody beefing about the gun they had in the car or the bag of dope in their pocket. And they bring in money. So what!

Parkers are all about REVENUE.

Movers written by Beat officers and taken to Traffic Court usually are settled for costs only. REVENUE to Daley?? Very little

RED LIGHT cameras?? 85 outta every 100 directly to the City. Forget to pay on a timely manner?? Fine doubles so 185 directly to Daley.

THOSE ARE THE FACTS...AND THE FACTS ARE UNDISPUTALE.

Irving Park Road and Pulaski is shortened, I have timed it and the yellow light is non-existent. While we're at it, since the red light cameras are all over the north side of Chicago, I'd love to see them all over the south side too, no reason the scumbags shouldn't get nicked $100 for speeding their homeboys to County after the drive-by gone bad.

Many communities that installed red light cameras have removed them.

Reason:the cameras did their jobs by reducing violations, but after folks complied with the law the towns were not making the money they wanted.

The cameras have a monthly service fee and when ticket revenue goes down, its not profitable.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR$.

Several of the near north suburbs, such as Park Ridge and Skokie tow no DL, no ins, hit and run and DUI offenses and have a $500 bond that must be paid to the village before Jose and Hose B can get their car out of the pound. And they have to pay the tow also.

I'm sure the tow companies get stuck with a percentage of the POS cars, but at least the shithead has to buy another car.

Sure it's about the revenue, but I strongly believe we need them. My daughter went off to college four years ago. On her way, at Foster and Central, she got t-boned by an idiot who was talking on her phone, speeding (because she wanted to "beat the red light") and went through a red light.

My daughter was in a coma. Because of the grace of God Almighty, my daughter did not die. But to this day and for the rest of her life, she will have neck, shoulder and back pain.

MUTCD specifies a federal absolute maximum yellow light phase of 3.0s. The problem is, the ITE (institute of traffic engineers) has a formula dictating proper phase timing. The formula takes into account 85th percentile speed (because we all know speed limits as a mathematical constant are bullshit in IL where everything is underposted), intersection width, and other factors such as signal visibility, etc. Therefore, a wider, more confusing intersection (North and Kostner) should have a longer phase than say, the one in front of St. Juliana's on Touhy. The problem is, they are all the SAME. I made a 20 minute presentation to this effect in front of a hearing officer a few years ago, using all the federal traffic laws/engineering info I could get my hands on, and found MANY things wrong with all of the intersections I studied, while comparable intersections in the suburbs were better designed and signaled. It was my conclusion that the city is making money and sacrificing safety in the process. So not only is it not about safety, but people are at risk for the SOLE PURPOSE of them getting revenue.

As far as I'm concerned, as a citizen, I would destroy any of these units if given the chance. if I saw anyone vandalizing one, I would gladly pretend I didn't see them (or go and help). I would hope you guys would do the same.

There comes a time when you just have to give up on the "good intentions of government" and see things for what they really are. It looks like a lot of the sheep are waking up. Let's hope it keeps happening. Even if we got rid of all the corruption today, we'd still have 10+ years of rebuilding to do. That is, if we don't end up like Detroit first, which is basically the point of no return.

Oh well. Time to move?

you want revenue & safety?

how about ticketing every driver that uses a right turn lane to zip around the traffic at intersections.

and how about ticketing every driver that uses the alleged "rush hour" lanes (ie, the parking lane where there is no parking from either 7 - 9 am or 4 - 6 pm)?

millions of dollars are sitting out there, and frankly, these jokers do nothing but make traffic worse by creating bottlenecks and preventing people from using right turn lanes to, y'know, turn right.
