School Waste

  • The day before the Chicago Public Schools are supposed to begin, there was a shocking sight at one Northwest Side school.

Dozens of desks were strewn about the ground after being tossed out of the building. Dumpsters in the parking lot behind the school were filled with books.

The scene surprised a lot of parents, given that school starts Tuesday. So CBS 2 [...] went to Palmer Elementary School, 5051 N. Kenneth Ave., to find out just what was going on.
We've reported on this a number of times about various high schools. Rooms stacked with books, supplies, even (then) top-of-the-line computers still packed in boxes, unused, gathering dust. We were challenged on a number of occasions, but as our sources were school officers in easily identifiable high schools, we respected their wishes for anonymity.

Palmer Elementary is just the tip of a giant iceberg. Talk to any custodian or building engineer who may be as fed up as many taxpayers are. Maybe a real reporter can "grease the skids" as it were. They'll tell you where the waste is hidden away. It's not just bloated administration.

If any (qualified) ah-hem... Investigative Reporter merely contacts a cooperative member in most public grammar schools, they'd easily verify that...
Every school gets money or alleged 'supplies' literally thrown at them at taxpayers expense. The work on the principle that if you don't accept the full amount you will be discounted the following year(s) by the amount not requested or dividends unused.
So, they merely accept the items, most of which are piled up in closets or storage areas and go unused. When they need to make room for more unnecessary, unused 'supplies' they toss out (or take home, since there's no accountability) the old and bring in the new.
I'm sure you don't need to be a Dick Tracy to find an anonymous school employee to disclose and verify this long accepted practice/abuse.

I'd like to know what CPS staffer is getting the kick back from Texas Instruments. The REQUIRED TI calculator for my daughter's freshman alegbra class at one of the college prep high schools (she got in on her own merits) costs $169 at Office Depot!!!

There are five(5) ground up, new schools and 19 renovated schools. The Gov wants to give every Public School student a lap Top computer. There are free back packs, paper and pencils for the students. Someone will learn something and the drop out rate will go below 50% this year.

What's next? The Robert Vanecko Mentorig Corp? I'm sure the mayor's grasping, greedy, slimey nephew won't let 30 million slip through his sticky fingers.

Not true for all CPS schools. This funding that they "use or lose" is federal funding which is soley based on how many low income students attend the school. So on the northside, the few public schools that you can actually send you kids to, get next to nothing and have to rely of PTA fundraisers to help keep the school going.
However, you are 100% correct on the "use or lose" money....they must spend it all or they won't get it all the next year. So basically, money is being thrown at crappy schools and the CPS schools that are actually doing well get nothing because the parents have jobs and pay their bills. Just an FYI- on a police officer's salary alone...no second income....you would have to have at least 8 dependents to qualify for federal low income funds. So these North side CPS parents are not rich unlike the members of the BOE may believe!

Why should anyone be surprised. I worked with a contractor that got paid for some IT work at several Chicago Public Schools. Things that were noticed and no one said a word:

Guys in the network closet (where the switches and routers are) making 50 a hour, basically sitting on their ass.

During the negotiations with IBM for new computers I questioned why would we make the schools pay 3k per desktop when that was not needed. I got a evil voodoo look from my boss. One school bought over 300 of these monsters.

As we unpacked the boxes at the downtown office on Clark Street, a manager came up to us angry, I for sure thought he would bitch and whine about the cost of the computers. He wanted to know why his department was not getting the new flat screen monitors and he would gladly pay for the "upgrade". I shit you not.

Last but not least, we forced teachers at this one high school to sign a waiver that if their laptops got stolen while on CPS property (stop laughing) they were on the hook for the entire cost.

Last story. At at school on the west side, while we were bringing in the $3,000 computers, a older black man was cleaning the hallways, picking up some dusty ass books. I then bent down to help making comments as to where is his trash bin, he replied "these are the new books".

True story and I attempted to bring this to many people, no one would listen. CPS is a known haven for fiscal mismanagement no matter who is in charge.

..to hit each other with or forget on the bus...

Do I seem supremely unimpressed by what I see on the street every day? Fucking "poor" people with dollar signs printed in gold all over their jackets, $200 shoes, cell phones, gold chains, $100 hairdos, airbrushed custom nail art -- but no brain. Watch them play with the "push button to get green light" thing -- finger it, poke at it -- without ever actually pushing it. Then all nineteen of them go wandering off at an angle into the heavy traffic on North Avenue or someplace and everyone has to hit the brakes while they keep talking shit and laughing, walking backwards and yelling at each other.

Yeah. A laptop will help.

It wouldn't be very anonymous. The school engineers are the one's the principals use to flush equiptment. If they want to keep their jobs they have to play by the principals rules. They're much like us. They go along with the program and look forward to the 1st, 16th and retirement.
