Sports Time

  • There is not a lot left for the Bears to evaluate entering tonight's preseason finale at Soldier Field against the Cleveland Browns with most of the starters scheduled to play a series, maybe two.

But don't try telling the players on a real or perceived bubble that little is at stake. Jobs, goals and dreams are on the line -- and knowing that general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith will have something to consider before final cuts for what might be two or three open spots, tops, on the 53-man roster. Players reported to training camp five weeks ago, and this marks their final opportunity to make a statement -- good or bad -- with 22 cuts due by 5 p.m. Saturday.

  • What's at stake: Certainly not a playoff spot, but this game does have serious city implications. If the Cubs win, not only will this season's series end tied 3-3, but the all-time official series will be 36-36. Obviously, if the Sox win, they will have a 37-35 advantage and give their fans winter bragging rights.
Not bad for a Thursday.

Sorry OT

Im watching the channel 9 news at noon. They are talking about employees. Its a given fact as I just heard on TV, that a happpy motivated employee will show a better output/performance. Less sick time. An attitude of I want to do good. Unlike this department that does nothing to set you up to be successful.

Ive never worked for a more idiotic company that actually goes backwards like the city of Chicago does. Anybody that tries to do anthing on this job needs to be psyched for total stupidity!

CPS unveils $30M anti-violence plan
September 3, 2009 12:19 PM | 12 Comments
Chicago Public Schools officials say they'll spend about $30 million to target about 1,200 high school students most at risk of committing violence or falling victim to it under a new safety and security plan outlined today.

The students will be selected using risk factors like grades, attendance and serious misconduct in school, District CEO Ron Huberman told the Tribune editorial board. Based on those factors, district officials predict that 200 students have a more than 20 percent chance of being shot and another 1,000 face a 7.5 percent to 20 percent chance of the same fate.

Huberman said that by assigning full-time mentors to and getting jobs for the most at-risk students, the district can intervene before kids are enmeshed in violent behavior.

On an unrelated topic, we lost a good detective today from Area 2:
Maverick Porter died. He had open heart surgery last week. A good man who always "kept it real."
You'll be missed, old friend.

The last game this year between the Sox and Cubs is finally done. As it looks, neither team will be going to the playoffs. But, for me, it's not about that. It's now about winners and losers. And today, the winners won. Sox win! And take the series lead. HA!!!!

With much love (and a lotta hate)Soufsyder.

O.T. Does anyone know when the next round of promotions for exempts is? We certainly need more gold braids, now. Crime is up, my application is in, and the major events are coming to Chicago in the near future. More than that, just 3 short years I can retire with a very good income. COME ON JODY, PLEASE MAKE MORE EXEMPTS. THE CITY CAN WELL AFFORD TO PAY ALL OF US A GOLD BRAID PENSIONS.

I live in Lakeview, and just now there was a guy in our alley screaming for 30 min "Stop talking shit about me, bitch!" and "I'm going to break your window, bitch!" and banging on the fence, dumpsters, etc. Officers showed up pretty darn quick, and, by the end, there were 3 cars and a wagon.

I was really impressed by the professionalism of the officers under SUCH provocation. They kept their cool. It couldn't have been easy, because he was completely uncooperative, and called them some horrible names.

Several times he invited the policewoman to "Shoot THAT, bitch!" I wouldn't have blamed her if she'd taken him up on it.

But, now, it's peaceful again, thanks to the fantastic officers that were in my alley a few minutes ago, dealing with that lunatic. We appreciate the dangerous and difficult work you all do to keep us safe.

watching the cubs and sox play against each other is, at this point, like watching the "cripple fight" scene from south park where timmy and jimmy, the two handicapped kids were fighting in the parking lot. i am a die hard cubs fan, but, they are really starting to try my patience. i am sorry for comparing the handicapped to the cubs and sox...i shouldn't insult the handicapped like that. before some of the goofs that read this site feel that i'm being nasty, this is just a funny comparison to a couple of failing chicago sports teams and a couple of FICTIONAL cartoon characters. it is not meant to demean any handicapped person or their situation. TIMMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!!!!

The last time Jay Cutler had winning season was in high school.

I revise my original prediction of 10-6. The Bears will go 7-9. The only way Cutler might do better is if he starts for Lane Tech.

bears go 12 and 4 this season--- the cubs suck and the sox are not that far behind them--- GO BLACKHAWKS, they better score some goals because that sieve huet will be giving up plenty of goals--- is the future of the franchise kane or toews--- more kane jerseys in the stands but my money is on toews---- the golden jet could probably still lace them up once a week and give them 20 shifts a game, just keep plenty of martini's chilled on the bench-----
