Fundraiser for an injured P.O. in the 012-Dist on 30-Oct-2009, FOP-Hall, come one come all, need your support.

P.O. injured on 13-Sept-2008, Buffalo-Grove Bank-Robbery gone bad ends chase here in Chicago on 18th & Racine Ave, resulting in P.O. getting t-boned and ejected from his squad with multiple sever head and other injuries throughout his body.

13-Sept-2009, a year later is now off the city payroll and still scheduled to have a fourth surgery, and has yet to receive disability pending a hearing in late October or early November?!

Tickets are $20-dollars and can be purchased in the 012-Dist. See P.O. Bob Erklin, or 2nd Watch.

Hope to see you there.

On a somewhat related note, there was a truly beautiful memorial in the Sun Times obituary today for Officer Nate Taylor by someone named Big Jimmy. It was a touching tribute by someone who evidently watched him grow up.

Officer Taylor must have been a wonderful human being.

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation was the organization that raised money for headstones for fallen officers. You should direct your question to them.

Funds raised went directly to pay to place markers on graves of Chicago police officers killed in the line of duty. The remainder of the funds were donated to the CPD Memorial Foundation. We are a registered 501c charitable organization and if anyone would like to contribute, they can go to our website at www.PDCPD.org. Thanks for your support.

An FYI, the money that was raised for the headstones applies strictly to the headstones and not to overall band expenses. These people give many hours of their own time for our department and for other charitable events. At least we can do is support them the way they have always shown their support for all of us. And No, I am not a member of the band, just an observant P.O. who has seen them give of themselves for the good of the department and not expect anything in return. This fundraiser would be a perfect way for all of us to repay them for what they do for us.

If you would like to contribute directly to the band you can go to our website and make a donation via paypal.com, you can also buy tickets there. If you don't want to use paypal, you can send a check to us via the mail, also listed on the website. Or if you don't like either option, give me a call and I will come to you.
To answer the question about the money for the headstones, it was used to purchase over 60 headstones and pay for them to be placed on the graves of the officers who were killed in the line of duty and their headstones were either destroyed or they never had one. Headstones were sent all over the United States and the band traveled to several of these locations to perform at the unveiling of the headstones. Some of the places included Niles, Michigan; Campbellsville, Kentucky and several local cemetaries. There were a few graves of deceased officers that could not be located at all for various reasons, mainly poor record keeping. These memorial markers were placed in the atrium of the Academy and are still there to this day. Hope that helps answer any questions.
Please come to the party and have and celebrate with us.
Thanks,
Bill Schield

Do you know that the department is creating a ribbon for the people in pipes and drums? Seriously, they are. Look into it. What about all of the other social groups that give countless donations to the memorial and to police families? Wasn’t this group created because someone got pissed off that was in the Emerald Society and left to start this group? I’ve been to events where both of these groups show each other up and we are at a fu*king memorial ceremony which makes me disgusted and question why they are there in the first place. Looks like some boss is affiliated with the group doesn’t have enough ribbons on their chest and they need to get another one. Before you go off, I understand they play at police funerals and other events, but they get carried code 049 to do it so they aren’t burning time to go. Every police funeral I’ve attended, I wasn’t working and took my own time (as with other countless officers) to attend and was never carried code 049. If they want an award, give them a honorable mention each year they are in the club, not a ribbon.

I could care less that you don’t publish this, but creating a ribbon for one special group isn’t too bright and will piss off and alienate the other groups that work hard for the memorial. I’m not from the Emerald Society either.

Hey 1:26 crying about ribbons and code 049:

1. Publish your name and stop hiding behind anonymous sissy ass posts.
2. Learn the english language then you will have an additonal skill besides complaining.
3. Pipes and Drums, both Emerald Society and Chicago both put many more hours of practice and preparation behind all of those
events, so code 049 is the least the department can do to ensure a fallen officer is given a proper and ceremonious burial.
4. Pipes and Drums of the CPD play many benefits and fundraisers for NOTHING, giving of their own time and talents to help others.
5. Finally, you big oaf, if you should tragically choke to death on your third whopper tomorrow while on duty, we will be at your funeral and your family will really think you died a hero, instead of the ZERO that you really are.

Ouch! I say SCC, thanks for all you do to put out info on various fundraisers, and providing us with updates on the health and welfare of sick and injured P.O.s. Too bad people have to hijack such a thread for their own political or other self-sering purposes. If the Pipes and Drums do get a medal, which I will believe when I see, then hey, guy....no one's stopping you from joining. You too can spend thousands on an instrument and the gear and all your spare time away from your family or spouse trying to learn a very demanding and difficult instrument. You too can piss off neighbors when practising, and pay for your own private lessons in order to not embarass yourself at the most sacred duty you could ever perform. If these guys didn't get 049, do you think many could attend, considering they're all working police? Try getting time due from a district. You too can send several nights a week playing for nothing at benefits and fundraisers for our own. Oh, and by the way, last I heard, we can all earn a medal by doing something above and beyond the call. Go make an arrest. Stay off the medical. Jeeze. What a whiner.

And how about all the other stuff we in the Emerald Society pipes and drums of the the Chicago Police Dept do thats not carried code 049? like the countless benefits, parades, fund raisers and practice every thursday night ON OUR OWN TIME. or do you think we just show up for Funerals?
which I know both bands "hate" doing, not "hate" as in the time and effort, but in "hate" as we lost another fine officer doing his job.and seeing the faces of his friends and family as they see the bands honoring their loved ones.

I agree there should be only one band and the bad blood was started by old timers who still carry that torch today. but one day they'll be gone and we will be one band..
until then good tidings to my brothers in the CPD band..congrats

SO ANYONE THAT IS, WAS, OR WILL BE IN THE BAND WILL GET A RIBBON? OR WILL IT BE ONLY THE CLOUT "HEAVY" ONES. THE BAND HAS BEEN BEAT DOWN AND NOT BY THE OTHER BAND! BUT, BEAT DOWN BY SOME IT'S MEMBERS. I THINK THE RIBBON IS A BAD IDEA. I DO HOWEVER FEEL THAT A PIPE BAND COMPOSED OF ONLY COPS IS GREAT. THERE SOME BIG EGOS IN THE THAT BAND.

I was in the band, and I will say that it is a very big commitment. We had to spend alot of money on our uniforms and bag pipes go for about a "G", not to mention monthly dues. We also had to practice on our own time. Code 049 or time due it did not bother me. The Band is a great bunch of people. They do try to do the very best. Like with any organization there are different personalities. Finding that common ground can be a mother. If you want to join the band keep in mind it is a commitment and the money well you can always make more, the time due well you can earn that back too. Being there for a fallen officer or some cops wedding or anything that will support our fellow officer is really priceless. Don't let the rumors or anything else make your decision. This department needs to stick together and not be ripped apart. Well I think I have said enough. I have thought about rejoining the band myself. I just need to make the commitment and really stick to it.

Creating an award for only members of the department that are only from Irish descent sets a bad precedence and bad policy period. Think about it.

If the two individuals want to hack this out, you can always meet at the gym over at homan and work things out. Those two need to man up and meet. It is too bad that a few ruin a good thing, I hope that the change in the new band work and they last another 50 years. I wish you guys the very best.

First off, whoever started this rumor about the PDCPD getting any award, I'd love to know where you get your information. This is the first anyone has heard anything about this.
Second, the PDCPD is NOT an ethnic organization, whether it be Irish, Scottish, or whatever. I've been with the band for over 8 years and I don't have a lick of Irish in me. Over the years, we've had black and hispanic band members who have served with distinction. So please get your facts straight.

First off, thank you to all of you who support both the Pipes and Drums and The Emerald Society. We all truly love what we do and we do it because of a Code, but it is NOT a Code 49. It is the code of honor and rememberance. Never letting the names of our fallen be forgotten. Time has a way of making us lose our memories. Memories of Kilroy and Hauser, or Camp or Wilson, Sexton and Stoffragen or Valadez. Our Code is one of brotherhood and family, and making sure that we are there when the family of a fallen hero needs us. Both bands thrive off this code. And no Code 49 will ever be more important than that. If you would like to try it out for awhile and see just exactly what I am talking about feel free to come by the Academy on any Tuesday or Thursday. Come to practice and see what it takes to do what we do. Both organizations would love to have some new blood in them. Because that is how we make sure the new ones don't let the memories of the past fade away. We welcome all new and former members to come and be a part of our organizations.
I had a conversation with Pat McNulty (a founding member of The Emerald Society Pipes and Drums) just prior to his retirement. He likes to call us "The Protestant" band. Anyway, he asked how the band was doing and I told him things were going well and that we were still having a good time. He turned to me and said, "Kid, that's what it's all about. Having fun and making sure we never forget." I have almost 20 years on the job and he still calls me kid, lol. Anyhow, He's right. That is what it is all about. So when you hear the pipes coming down the street, whether it be The Emerald Society - CPD or The Pipes and Drums of the CPD, remember. Remember those who have gone before us. Remember those who gave their lives so others could sleep peaceably in their beds at night. Say a prayer for their families and shed a tear as "Balmoral" or "Mist Covered Mountains" rings through the air. Remember, and never forget.

God Bless you Pat, enjoy your much deserved retirement.

Lyrics to "When the Pipers Play" as sung by Isla St. Clare (youtube it, it's awesome)

I hear the voice,
I hear the war
I hear the sound on a distant shore
I feel the spirit of yesterday
I touch the past,
When the Piper’s play.

The pipes get played,
For you and me
They kept on saying we’ll soon be free
And your soul will never fade away
You live forever,
When the piper’s play

The piobrach hears its deadly cry
That some will live
And some will die
And though they fought so far away
I feel their presence
When the pipers play

The pipes kept playing for you and me
They kept on saying we’ll soon be free
And your soul will never fade away
You live forever,
When the piper’s play

It speaks of love I have lost
Its speaks of my eternal cost
It speaks the price of peace to pay
Of lives remembered,
When the Pipers play
We will remember when the pipers play

[Pipes Playing]
