- Freelance photographer Mike Anzaldi was on his way to lunch in Chinatown on Tuesday when he happened upon a scene of several men holding an alleged purse-snatcher. Chicago police soon arrived and arrested the man, who was later charged with misdemeanor theft and battery.
There's a slide show, too. We can't embed it but here's a link. The offender gets in a few good bites on clothing and a hand before being clocked.
And as noted by a few wags here and at the BreakingNews site, if this had been the police fighting this jagoff, it's be front page news for days, the cops would be at Call Back and the offender would have thirty different bottom feeders knocking at his door looking for a contingency fee.

I always thought Jesse was a con man , opportunist who took advantage of his own people's gullability. If you do something like that off duty the brass would say you should have just called 911, it was not an immediate threat of life. And then J-Fed will send you to the Federal Courts and you can have lunch and dinner every day with Billy Cozzi(which would be an honor.)

The failure to bring the Games here has nothing to do with Chicago's crime rate, corruption, Daley, the Obamas or the opinion of John Kass. Great job to the citizens who captured this strong arm robber. But if a cop was doing these "moves" to hold on to the offender, a lot of people would be up in arms and saying "police brutality". Chicago cops are not supermen and superwomen. They don't have super powers that make it easier for them to chase, grab and arrest people. They have to do the same moves that the three men in the photo used. But every week there are people in the media and people that the media interview would be quick to say that it shouldn't take three people to take down one man. But clearly it does. She was offered medical assistance but refused. Then thry were going to try to put a hold on him but couldn't even get that without the dicks talking to her so they had o other option but to charge him with theft and battery then hope for an upgrade at his court date, which we all no won't happen because the offender and vicim, either both or at least one of them won't show. This is why I'm all for holding their proerty until charges are approved or their court day. You know damn well all she wanted was her stuff back and screw the hard work these officers did to try to get robbery approved. And they did try hard. One of them, E.J was a tact officer for years and knows his shit. But they exhausted every option they had and finally had to go with the misdemeanor charges. I've been in situations like that when you have the offender in custody and the victim doesn't want to put in the effort to see that he/she gets what's coming to them.
The last time this happened I grabbed the offender and when all the paper work was done I handed the victim his copies and gave him the court date to which he stated, " Court? Oh, I can't go to court. I can't take the time off from work." When I told him that if he doesn't show, the case would be thrown out. Mr. Victim didn't care. On the court date Mr. Victim was a no show so the shithead got a pass from the judge and threw the case out.
Kudos to the citizens apprehending this asshole. Job well done! All future vigilantes should carry a baseball bat and wear a mask. Either that or right to carry for law abiding citzens.

Why officers on this department continue to bend rules to satisfy their own sense of moral justice is beyond me. If the victim won't sign complaints that a crime occurred then the presumption is that the offender obtained her property legally.
Expect both the offender and victim to complain and sue the officers involved.
The people who live in this city are disgusting.
The photog that just kept shooting while the action was in-progress is a reminder of the famous incident in Saigon in the early 1960's. As a protest of the (then growing) Viet Nam War, a Buddhist monk doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire. All the while the media watched, filmed and did nothing to stop it.
They've come a long way...maybe not.
Something that wasn't mentioned about the photographer's play by play on the news, was how he defended each action of the "good semaritans". He filled in the blanks defending eveything they did and how each action was justified. Even making sure to downplay the number of strikers the "bad guy" took and how he "had no idea why he was bleeding".
If that had been to police officers fighting with the "bad guy", I somehow think that his description of events would have been much different. Any strikes or holds would have been describe as "unecessary brutality". "The big bad policeman didn't have to do what they did", etc.. etc.. etc...
It's just funny how things change when the "average joe" puts themselves in our shoes... all of the sudden it's all legit for them.

Listen to the audio commentary. The narrator is very descreptive in saying how the bystanders only hit the bad guy enough to subdue him and he repeats this like 5 times. I could only imagine what his commentary would be if it was a PO. It wouldve been a vicious beating of an honor student on his way home from after school study group.
Well if thats true that the victim wanted her stuff back without signing complaints easy solution. You inventory all of it as evidence. That way she gets it back weeks later.

I don't understand most of the comments on this page. Everyone who says "the cops aren't allowed to do this" seems to me to be confused. You are *different* from civilians. You are trained. You have restraints on you. You have mace or something similar. You have a coordinated response. You should not *need* to flail around like a bunch of civilians.

You have restraints on you. You have mace or something similar. You have a coordinated response. You should not *need* to flail around like a bunch of civilians.
Am I missing something? Sometimes the cops need to kick ass, but it seems like the job is better and safer if the training, restraints, mace, and coordination are used.

I posted the question about why training, coordination etc. doesn't help the cops in these situations. What I got back was a bunch of either bitchy sarcasm, or whining. That was disappointing. I was hoping that someone here could actually give an answer. Instead, I was condescended to.
All I can say is, if you hate the job that much, get a different one. If you don't think you know techniques, and have the ability to drop some asshole thief easier than a bunch of civilians, what do you think you're bringing to the table? Regardless of the understaffing, lack of a contract, incompetent leadership etc., if you are just me, but with a gun and a billy club, maybe THAT is a problem.
And future victim? Yeah, if the board here is representative of the CPD in general. Let's hope there are still cops who are putting in more than minimal effort.

so, i read the entry and ran down the comment section. "bitch, pussy, whore, dork, coward, loser, dickhead, asshole, hippocrite (which is nothing...hypocrite maybe?), jagoff, glory hound, piece of shit and liberal media scum." sure i missed some too.

one last thing...someone compared this chinatown incident with the pulitzer prize photo that malcolm browne shot in 1963 of a monk protesting the persecution of buddhists by the south vietnamese government. (sorry fella, but it wasn't a war protest) this poster claims that browne should have stopped the suicide, and that i should have intervened.
while i appreciate my image being compared to a pulitzer winner, i think you're off. the two are similar in a not-at-all sort of way.

Det.'s aren't sitting around waiting for the phone to ring hoping you've got work for them. Those case reports you made get assigned and are followed up. Hunting down the unlisted witnesses and checking out their stories part of their job.
Having the witnesses and victims wait around for an hour or two is nothing considering we want to lock the guy up for years. We have less than 48 hours to straighten out any mess, whether it is from the police, offender, victim, asa, etc. Det's don't have magic pixie dust.
