More For Less - Again

The CTA is sinking!!! They need money Money MONEY!!!

Oh wait, it does that every year:
  • CTA service would run less frequently and the basic fare would be raised to as much as $3 next year under a dire 2010 budget proposal unveiled today.

The CTA workforce would be hit hard as well to ease a projected $300 million budget shortfall.

  • Up to 1,100 union jobs and 100 administrative position are slated for elimination if new public funding and employee concessions fail to occur, transit officials said.

"Union employees have been relatively untouched by layoffs [in recent years]," said CTA President Richard Rodriguez. "We are asking the unions to step up and be a part of the solution."

For this being such a "union" town, the union leadership sure seem in a hurry to give back all sorts of negotiated items for zero concessions by the City. We're sure the SEIU, the bus drivers, Streets, Transportation, the trades and laborers are really wondering about those endorsements and give-backs to a Machine that is gutting them.

Why does the city help fund the cta? Does that mean they should live in the city like other revenue generating departments do? No! They do not have to live in this city. What's up with that. Somebody please explain.

Here's how you fix the CTA.

When you look at a bus and the only person in it is the driver. Reduce that route by (1) bus.

Then reassess and repeat. No thank-you's nesessary.

Look, don't feel bad for SEIU Local 73. They screwed the other 400 members of their bargaining unit in IBEW by signing a secret side amendment to their contract with the city. The dispatchers at OEMC and the Airport got out voted for a contract we didn't want because the city put us in a bargaining unit with these morons. Now .....we are being forced to abide by an amendment to that contract that Local 73 signed behind our back. The city is claiming that IBEW members at OEMC and the airport are bound by this amendment. It takes away our paid holidays and our ability to request to be paid for overtime worked instead of taking comp time. SEIU KNEW this was going to happen so before you feel bad for them for getting screwed by the city..why don't you take them to task for screwing the other members of their bargaining unit?

It is the bottled water tax syndrome. There is a point beyond which diminishing returns are the result.

Bottled water is an example, total tax receipts went way down after shit for brains leaders put that 5 cent bottled water tax in place. People go elsewhere.

Raise the CTA fares too much and total receipts will go down, not up. Witness daley's head tax.

*THIS IS A TRUE STORY*

_THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER_

This one is a little different....
Two Different Versions! ................. Two Different Morals!

_
OLD VERSION_: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer
long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and
plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
*

MORAL OF THE STORY:_ Be responsible for yourself_

MODERN VERSION:_

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building
his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and
plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and
demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed
while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the
shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable
home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp
contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor
grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody
cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green.'

Acorn stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the
news stations film the group singing, 'We shall overcome.' Rev.
Jeremiah Wright then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the
grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King
that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and
both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his
fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act
retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green
bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home
is confiscated by the Government Green Czar.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits
of the ants food while the government house he is in, which just
happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he
doesn't maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the
house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who
terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.** _
MORAL OF THE STORY_:** /Be careful how you vote in 2010./*

Don`t you love America. I do.

Its amazing that the shortfall is just about the amount the city/cta spend on the "station to nowere" that we now have to spend additional millions every year just to keep it from falling apart and leaving a huge hole in the downtown area.
Of course, after the mayor and his cronies divided up the cash ( and huge cost overruns ) it seems the taxpayer is left holding the bag, again!

This city, county, state is a joke... This government is the worst. This place is run like a Dictatorship - "what government saids, it does".... People here DO NOT have a voice or say in anything. Daley and the Aldermans lay down the law and that's it and the people can't or won't do anything about it. Businesses can't even come here and set up shop because of the politics (for example, Walmart..., and Cricket - just getting here when they were in other states years ago)
* do they think people like being nickeled and dimed here and there?
* do they think gun restrictions lower gun crime?
* do they think raising all kinds of taxes and fees pull in more revenue?
Guess what?
** you give out those stats about murders being down, however, shootings are wayyyy up. You impose gun restrictions on law abiding citizens, but not on thugs and gangbangers... plaxico went to jail for 2 yrs for shooting himself, thugs here get a slap on the wrist. I can't wait for the Supreme Court to do the right thing!
** people are shopping in other states and counties to avoid the high taxes.
** aldermans are a waste of taxpayers' money - they have too much power and control
This can be a great city and state if it had NEW management. The mismanagement, waste, creative accounting, and corruption is unbelievable.

For the 10th consecutive year the CTA is painting a Dooms Day scenario in their self-created budget crisis. How about chopping some of the top salaries of CTA execs? That they have done a crappy job is obvious, if they had done a good job the CTA would not have been in this mess.

Want to sell a capital asset? Sell the goddamn CTA! Sell it to a private management firm who will run it right! And do it quickly.

Why is government not held to the same standards?!

You can only cry wolf so many times before people ignore you. If the CTA is so badly mismanaged (and, yes, that includes Huberman's brief tenure, as well), then heads should roll.

Prices, however, should not change. Raising the price will result in fewer riders. Fewer riders will result in lower income. Vicious cycle.

In a time of economic crisis, which probably affects users of public transportation more than others, why stick it to them even more???

The Daley administration claims to be so green. Our accidental governor claims to be, as well. The Federal government swears it's the way to go... so, how about subsidizing public transport during this hardest of times? After all, it's the least the U.S. can do, considering it just subsidized the gas guzzling auto industry to the tune of billions.

And buses and trains are far more fuel-efficient, per rider, than cars.

10/13/2009 04:42:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

They can raise the price of a ride to $10 and I would still stop mutts with packs of 20 free ride cards that they get for free so they can make their parole/probation drops. do the citizens realize how many free passes are given out? Riding the CTA is like going to Roosevelt University, one half is paying full boat for the other halves free ride.

10/13/2009 05:25:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is no Constitutional right to cheap public transportation. It is service provided by a for profit organization. I never ride the bus but some of my taxes go to CTA, Pace etc.

If you want to ride, pay up.

If you don't want to pay up, shut up and walk.

10/13/2009 06:16:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's see: in today's scum times, some guy was bitching because a ride will be $3.00 one way. That's $6.00 round trip, $30.00 bucks for a 5 day work week. The whiney fuck. That's still cheaper than a car, and because I live on the south side, I can't ride the bus or El because it's unsafe.

Well I could, I've got a pistol, but you know what I mean.

And I apologize for reading the scum times.

No. Daley says only people in dangerous first responder jobs have to live in the city. Teachers get away with it, CTA and everyone else, da police and da fire...NO. I'd call that discrimination, but everyone else (alderthieves, illinois reps) conveniently says no.

I work out in the Morton Grove area. My commute is 4 to 4 1/2 hours total per day. I'm not the only one.

Yes, I have looked at apartments out in the burbs. Shitboxes with less sq footage, $250+ more then what I'm paying plus utilities.

Thanks to Mayor Daley & these other asses, I HAVE I go outside my city unless of course I want to work at a 7 Eleven, Starbucks, Walgreens, etc. Places that typically pay min. wage and f/t is considered 32 hours per week or less.

My professional background includes 10 yrs of bus. mgmt. including various areas, corporate training, numerous awards, etc.

This state sucks. Just look at all for sale, for rent, etc businesses and others that are vacant. Factories are being demolished in my area let alone VACANT store fronts. Even worse, jackass Daley put parking meters by the only businesses left. Some blocks have oen store and yes, there is ONE parking meter just recently placed there.

If you look at our transit, its extemely outdated. Why do all the trains revolve around the Loop? Is Chicago only the downtown area? Yes, it is. These goons earn a LOT fo money and are clueless how to amke transit work. Look at new York. Transit is very effective there.

This state sucks and is very behind the times...

Because government, as it has devolved, has become a business whose customers are compelled to purchase it's 'goods and services'.

Not sure if rumor or if they drank too much but we were told at roll call in 007 today 16oct09 0800hrs that Peterson addressed midnights last night and stated that "all districts are going 4-2 as of 01Jan10. Also stated by watch rep at same roll call that there was an emergency FOP meeting today but it seems that 4-2 is already set in stone, just waiting for the order to get printed. Well we have been bitching about 6-2 for years and now it may be here. I say great, but I'm sure others will still bitch because thats what cops do(want something for years, finally get it then complain that it must be some conspiracy from FOP and the city)
