Police Technology?

  • The Chicago Police Department is breaking out a piece of its most advanced crime scene technology to crack a mystery that dates back millions of years: how did Sue move?

The police will use the scanner to help the Field Museum better figure out answers to that question and others about the museum’s beloved Tyrannosaurus Rex specimen.

Police will bring a portable laser surface scanner used to create digital images of crime scenes to the museum this Saturday. The scanner, which weighs about 70 pounds, will take images from six different locations.

Over the past few years, we've been on the scene of maybe 100 homicides all told. And we've never seen this piece of equipment. Ever. But they are going to roll it out for a 65 million year old fossil?

We're told that three forensic experts have to be pulled off the streets to run it and even then it doesn't work worth a damn. How many hundreds of thousands or millions did this cost? And it has solved how many crimes?

They must have gotten a tip that Sue was the victim of foul play. So they are using this tool to gather the evidence to clear a possibly very old homicide.

The case will be shipped over to Cold Case who will charge Fred Flintstone.

Just because you do not see it doesn't mean we don't have it. Forensic Services has had this scanner (like the one on crime 360 show) for months. The problem is, it is so difficult to use the training is on going by the three forensic guys (of course hand picked. Being none had cad knowledge they started at step one, then they only attempt to use it once in a while even though the men were taken off watches which are now short people. The TEAM has yet to produce anything, and the cost $247,000 plus training per man $14,000. They have come out to a very few scenes, haven't been able to look at any finished product though. And stop picking on the directors play son.

The machine costs a few hundred thousand dollars. The machine will give exact measurement of pieces of evidence within a given area, ie 12x12 room. The machine will not draw a crime scene map. Another machine is used for that. Select police forensic investigators are being trained to use the machine. Watch Crime 360 on TV and you can see one work.

Ok, so I've been scetching crime scenes by hand for years now and somewhere in the CPD we have an automated laser system to do this?

What sort of clout murder case does it have to be to have this device rolled out???

What other high tech devices did the department purchase, that we don't get to use?

Maybe there will be a streaming video put out sometime about when and how the D unit can use this device.

How is this a positive story? We haven't had a contract in almost 2.5 years. Daley, Stroger, Balgo and now Quinn are proposing to raise taxes to highs unseen. Have you gotten a property tax bill yet and wondered how a house can lose so much value, yet the tax goes up? And the Department spend how much money on this machine that has been used on how many crime scenes? One?

If we were a regular taxpayer, we'd be pissed that the Department is wasting this money on a 65 million year old fossil instead of figuring out how to get more cops on the street in cars that don't have 180,000 miles on them and preventing a few crimes in our neck of the woods.

It's like the show on TV that shows them using this technology in various cities to map crime scenes.

In Shitcago they can do one in 11, get scale diagrams in 3D of the empty flamin' hot bag tumbleweeds, discarded jab-wrap and the permanently ensconced WIC collectors on the curbs.

WHISTLEBLOWER time, Fed grant money used. They openly breached the terms of the grant.

3 (out of 35) full time forensic investigators (FI) on Leica team led by HK. Also 3 partime FIs (1 just quit; leadership issue) on team impacts manpower.

HK a P.O. getting Sgt. pay , a take home car without authorization. He uses this car (gps equiped) for family vacations to michigan. Recently vandals broke out this cpd unmaked windows parked overnight in front of HKs home.

Leica is a survey tool, $300,000, that is going be chewed up by the defense because it's to "scale."

HK and RD are padding their resumes. Leica specialists command $10,000 a minute for the final product in the private sector. This is all at CPD expense for their private ambitions.

The commander/diector contacted a&e 360 to cover the leica team too. Very glamerous...HK and MO are personal valets for the wheelchair bound commander. They get their perks/bonuses/rewards thru leica at the expense of the unit. Double, triple standards pervail dependent on shade of brown on respective noses. Sgt. MG benefits financially also, dark brown nose.

The 3 of them all get personal benefits. The unit suffers by the manpower loss.

The team dedicated to leica use their time for personal business/errands, photo classes, 4 hour lunches and than get ot on a daily basis. they are padding their pockets without any accountability or supervision.

This bill of goods sold up thru the chain of command and they signed off on it. These senior exempts and jfed want results. The museum pr campaign is smoke and mirrors.

The WHISTLBLOWER posters circulated department wide are a federal mandate. They are a joke. Who is gonna gamble away their current status in our culture of corruption.
Where does the buck stop...?

Wow lots of hate at the old 177. Nice try with the whistle blowers comments to bad no one is reading it. I can see why the rest of you outstanding investigators are so upset, after all you guys contribute directly to the amazing clearance rate. Lets talk OT. Why does a D1 PO in a district get tons of shit for taking an hour past check off for an arrest but you can take 9 hours from the time you leave a scene and the time you do an inventory? What are you fellas doing for all that time? Lets talk court, how much time do you spend in the library on 26th compared to how much your on the stand? Isn't the blog great!

It's not hate, but this place is 98% favoritism. The few people that GET the deals have less time here than most others have in the crapper. Like last years auto show the "boys" were going to work all day which ment ot for days off and past shift hours, when the contract was brought up about preplanned events director got pissed and put a working crew on the auto show and forbid any overtime. All we want is to share some of the milk and honey. Being an FI is a great and interesting job, being part of the trial shows that our street work is not bs. Can't we all just get along:):)

the "leica team" work 10 hr on 2nd watch in a s/s/m/ dog. they scheduel training and special projects like the dino scan on their days off or after hours for ot money.

HK, a po, is the team leader. that is how they justify the take home car. RD lost and regained his ride. The same ride that was involved in an off duty tc on his way home from work. somehow its an IOD.

FSS has 3 timekeepers and still get it wrong. 3-5 unit secretaries dependent on lite duty favors. All previous commanders had 1 secretary. lots of waste.
lots of hidden spots. very old school (in a bad way) managemanet.
Pre-FOP work place environment.

HK and RD exclusively receive authorization for frivolous and related off site/out of state training. They do not share or send report to academy as required under GOs. MS, house mouse, attends photo classes on company time with RD approval. MS then stays late to get his work done on ot. ETs and FIs who do the actual crime scene processing are denied and pay out of pocket.

The work place for ETs and the FIs would not pass OSHA minimal standards. ET north is the loft/2nd story of a motor maitenance garage, ET south is in a rat invested stand alone structure. FIs facility recirculates the air, its a closed system, windows sealed. ERPs and FSS share the air, chronic respiratory disease is the rule. The hvac is inadequate and elevators need inspection.

the director works bankers hours. arrives after am rush and gone before pm rush, if he shows at all.
He gets a full pension plus directors salary. part-time hours, full time dictator. 19th warder. friends with da mayor. he hates the unit, we aint worthy. power hungry. loves HK, RD, MG, DL, MS, which is also the chain of command. HK brags about his authority, mini-me. HK has JM pw and user name. He writes JM reports, memos, unit sop and has access to all personell and confidential files. HK brags that he writes the recommendations for merit nominations. HK is 9th ward.

power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absoulutely.
