Speaking of Ugly...

  • The CTA's plan to cut service dramatically and raise fares as high as $3 for express bus and rapid transit service is "very, very ugly," but so is the 30 percent drop-off in local tax revenue that created the crisis, Mayor Daley said Tuesday.

Although the plan to erase a $300 million shortfall was crafted by the mayor's handpicked CTA president, Daley stopped short of giving it his blessing in an apparent attempt to avoid taking the blame.

And the typical Shortshanks ploy - set up the minority fall guy in the big chair, then sidestep anything resembling "blame" lest someone get the bright idea of actually being able to run as a "reform" candidate against the corruption of the Machine.

Nice job Huberman, you fucked up the CTA even worse than it was when you got there, now you're gonna fuck up the schools even worse than they were when you took over CPS. You are on the right track to becoming mayor of shitholecago.

Geee, look at all the empty buses driving around every night with maybe on or two bums on board. They could cut out 1/2 the service and still be ok.

But revenue from the regional sales tax hike and Chicago-only increase in the real estate transfer tax are down 30 percent due to the prolonged recession, the mayor said...

Hey dumb-fuck daley, the only ugly thing here is you. The recession has nothing to do with it, but maybe charging over 10% in sales tax does you moron.

Yeah, and the drivers are assholes who don't pay any attention to the pedestrians and/or other drivers on the road. Thanks to the CTA driver who flattened a woman at 17th and Halsted yesterday. I'm sure you won't lose your job because your union is like the post office on wheels.

Daley has been stingier with public transit than any other mayor of Chicago, and has not raised the amount of support the city gives this essential service in his entire term. The CTA still receives only $3M in funding from the city.

Moreover, the agency is shorted by the RTA, which funds the suburban METRA trains much more lavishly. Think about that. Both METRA and CTA rely on public funding for 50% of their revenues, meaning every dollar you put in the farebox requires at least an even match from the public till. Given that METRA fares are higher, and their equipment costs more and their hourly wages are much higher, to haul fewer people per train, we can see that the much more economical CTA is shortchanged.

Worst of all, auto ownership receives lavish subsidies from the federal government and has done so for 60 years, for the destruction of our transit systems and cities. Obama's road stimulus program continues this pattern, for 60% of the road stimulus money is going to the most lightly-populated areas of the country for unnecessary highways that encourage sprawl development. The 100 largest metro areas of the country are receiving only 40% of the funds, though these areas contain 65% of the country's population and generate 75% of the country's economic activity.

That means that Chicago, one of the country's largest net taxpayers, is spending its money to build 8-lane highways through areas with the lowest population density while our transit and other essential services suffer.

Shortshanks has always been openly contemptuous of public transit and now that he isn't going to get his beloved Games, he doesn't see any sense in improving the CTA. Why spend precious tax dollars providing services for the taxpayers when everyone knows that you're supposed to use those to attract rich foreign tourists and line your pockets and those of your connected cronies?

Does this mean Daley will have to cut back on his personal fleet of police cars? After all with 33 servants for running errands, shopping, watching the kids, etc. it's only fair that he keep his entire fleet of NEW cars.

Open a Starbucks at the Chicago Red Line station and every other busy station. Stop the trains and buses that are homeless shelters at night. Make everyone pay for a ride. Increase VSEP.

Plan B and C. He's going to get the casino and the other airport he's wanted all along. The boat in the water where Meigs used to be and Rich Daley Airport. I don't have any inside info I just know his ginormous inflated ego which actually believes he deserves these things and since his hydro-head brother is in place to get it done in Washington, thy will be done. Just like NAFTA. (that he had nothing to do with)

Right. they (Mercy Hospital) is complaining that they are not getting the promised $60 million in TIF funds and started spending money they don't have. Sounds right, they get a public handout and tax revenues are down so they want theirs.

How about it daley? Are you going to cough up the cash for Mercy Hospital? No Olympics, I'll bet a box of donuts daley finds a way to steal more tax money and funnels it to Mercy.

I had the Sisters of Mercy (who work at Mercy Hospital) in grammar school; they are misnamed, they should be called the Sisters of No Mercy, they showed me none and look where I ended up.
