Off Duty Cop Killed in Wreck

All of our blogging partners had covered this at some point or another. Another tragedy befalls our family:
  • An off-duty veteran Chicago Police officer was killed in a rollover crash on the Kennedy Expressway early Monday on the Northwest Side.

    Eric Berger was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

    Berger, 52, was a 17-year veteran of the Chicago Police Dept. and was assigned to the Albany Park District on the Northwest Side

My sympathies to the Berger family and especially Eric's children..shame on those individuals who posted nothing but hateful negative comments about this incident on the Sun Times blog..this was nothing but an accident....Eric RIP

This is an awful story. From the comments posted-sounds like he was a good guy. Why do all the comments say that he won't be in pain anymore? Hope his family and friends will be ok. Say a prayer for him.

Eric was an intense,dedicated person. He fought the good fight against a relentless crippling disease that wreaks unrelenting pain to the body and mind,but not his soul. He will live on in our hearts. R.I.P Brother.

eric was a gentle giant, he leaves the world with an open spot that was pure kindness that no other shoes can fill. GOD BLESS you eric & GOD be with your family. There are those of us who do understand, be at peace.

My sincere condolences to the Berger Family & friends, & to our CPD Brothers & Sisters.

Oak Lawn PD also lost an Officer Monday morning to a heart attack at home, please keep Ofc. Martin Grode & his family in your prayers too. He was 53 & a 17 year veteran of OLPD. Thank You.

The Final Inspection


The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.

I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.

though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got to steep.

though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.

There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.

As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.

Did Not Know him,but once again I mourn for a silenced warrior.
Once again,I wear a black band to show MY respect for a man that stepped up against the evils in this City.
Once again I feel a sinking feeling in my chest.
