Mixed Message

Missed this story back on 28 October - another in a series of Daley crapping out a million dollars at a time:

  • Mayor Richard Daley today highlighted his proposal to spend an extra $1.4 million next year on programs aimed at ending homelessness as he said there's been a recent spike in the number of people at Chicago homeless shelters.

Daley said city count done in January showed the city's homeless population had dropped 10 percent to 5,170 in the past two years. The mayor said that number appears to have grown since then, though no figure was available.

So we're just supposed to trust him that the numbers are up, even without hard data to back it up? OK.

Then this appears the very next day:

  • Los Angeles County's homeless population has dropped 38% since 2007, according to a survey conducted earlier this year by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

The count, which was conducted over three days in January, pegs the region's homeless population at 42,694 -- down from 68,808 in 2007.

Maybe LA is shipping all their homeless out here?

He's going to launder that 1.4 million bucks.

The homeless, sadly, won't know the difference. I'm sure they aren't getting the memo that 1.4 million bucks has been allocated by shortshanks to assist them.

Next thing u know he'll be stealing from the senior citizens or kids with cancer.

Masters.

That number should increase on the heels of the "NEW" taxes they're asking for!! I'm no historian but didn't a bunch of people set sail from England a few years back to escape the tyranny of the monarchs taxing the shit out of them and quashing freedoms?? Must of been a movie I saw...couldn't happen here.

April 13, 2007 - According to a City of Chicago press release, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, along with homeless advocates, has provided a progress report on the City's Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness in Chicago.

Mayor Daley said in the report, "In short, our plan is working. We're making real progress in helping people find a way out of homelessness - and preventing them from becoming homeless in the first place. This is exactly what I envisioned when I endorsed Chicago's Plan to End Homelessness
Chicago's Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness is Already Successful
Chicago, IL
United States of America in 2003, because I knew we could do better for Chicagoans who find themselves homeless."

AND DIDN'T HE JUST CLOSE A SHELTER UP NORTH THIS YEAR?

The City of Chicago is trying to trim its budget when it comes to trimming its Christmas tree.

Last year, the city put up a 90-foot-high tree that was actually made up of 113 smaller trees.

The tree that will go up in Daley Plaza this year will be a single 56-foot blue spruce.

(((((((((((((((((((((( * ))))))))))))))))))))))

This is a cost cutting initiative? The city has all of the tree ornaments and decorations that are scaled to size for the larger tree. With governments being as stupid as they tend to be, I am now waiting to hear that ALL NEW tree ornaments and decorations needed to be purchased to match the size and scale of the new tree... at a cost to the taxpayers of an additional $1 million! So much for saving money!

The only worse news will be that they were purchased from the Mayor's nephew through his new company, Urban Street Decorations LLC which now has the no bid contract to sell the city all of their future holiday decorations. Of course, the Mayor is UNAWARE that his nephew is the owner of the company... Well you've heard this story before, I guess!

How do you get an accurate number of "homeless" people w/in a specific boundary. They are homeless nomads that wander. Some catch a greyhound to AZ, TX or FL in the winter and don't stay in Chicago all year round. Not too many come from the warmer states to freeze their asses off in Chicago. I suppose you can count the number of heads to come to shelters for the night, but that's not really accurate either. They wander and don't go to the same shelter every night. Just asking.

Lets be honest, SHIELDS is going to be the next FOP president and hopefully we can start proactively negotiating a decent contract from the midget.

Most Homeless are Vets from Vietnam I hope ur not saying that they are not worth the $ spent? They have fought for this country and served the flag in a war that few supported or served in. Remember most cops have never been in the military so U might not understand

SCC,

I wrote at 5.00 pm about the Sun Times comments following the article - Zoning investigator admits taking bribes. It is now 6.10 and the comment has been removed. It was about fraud in the Water Department.

So ignore my previous post. Move on there is nothing to see. You are doing a great job. Thanks to the police and thanks for the blog.

I have very little sympathy for the homeless - vets or not. They choose to live that lifestyle and not contribute to society. Why should we pay for their lack of responsibility? Well, I guess what's one more hack on the dole, right? We are already supporting an army of assholes that do nothing, why not another brigade?

Any viet vet has to be at least 58 years old, more likely in his 60's. If he's hpomeless, he's done a lifetime of hard traveling

Look up the movie titled "Soylent Green". Wikipedia has a synopsis of the movie. Now there's the solution. Good movie from 1973.

Being a vietnam veteran is no excuse for being a homeless, dope smoking, wine drinking piece of shit. There is plenty of assistance for any of us, all they have to do is want to help themselves.
