Get Well Officer
A Chicago police officer executing a search warrant was hurt this afternoon when he was struck in the leg by a bullet from another officer's gun that was intended for two charging dogs, police said.
The incident happened at about 1:15 p.m. in the 6000 block of South May Street, according to a police statement. Narcotics officers were at a home there as part of a investigation, and as one officer tried to secure a room, the two dogs attacked him.
He fired his gun at them, police said. One of the bullets hit a dog and then kept going in another direction, hitting another officer in the leg. That officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
Someone owes someone a beer. Maybe two.

Guys don't be to proud to ask SWAT to serve a warrant for you. We've used them and they are pretty professional and have the tools to get the job done safely.
The bullet went through the dog and hit the second officer because of the close proximity between the two officers and the two dogs involved in the shooting.
The officer did not shoot the other officer as it seems when you read the headline.
News affairs is SO fucked up...but what do you expect when you put non-working officers in spots?
Hopefully there is no permanent damage and a winter in Florida after the holidays. Get well office...

i would say the officer wounded owes the other officer a few beers.. he gets to enjoy christmas and new years off with family and then some! God bless both of them. to the officer that was shot... enjoy your time off.. dont rush back. and dont think about this job for a second while you are off. this job sucks, blows and any other adjective you can come up with.

Hey common sense, get a clue! Swat wouldn't of gone on that search warrant. Obviously your not the working police. There's a criteria for swat to execute a search warrant.

It seems like shooting at a fast charging and relatively small animal in close quarters is all but guaranteed to occasionally cause friendly fire incidents like this.
I wonder what options there are for handling this in a safer way.

Another reason to bring back the Remington 870. Rifles are being used during these searches and they will spin a round through several walls, out into the street and down the block. A good old Remington loaded with the new double 00 will splatter a dog or a drug dealer much more effectively than a rifle or handgun.

Call swat? It's a dog....where I work we do anywhere from 4-10 search warrants a week, and when they are involved it's time consuming. I appreciate when they can help but you can't just use them for a dog, get well soon pal.

Do you really think any officer would go into something (Search warrant in this case) knowing that it would go bad and not want to use SWAT or any other resource available? I do not. I am sure that if they knew it would go bad they would have done it differently.
They did not. These guys are on a search warrant team, I know that to be fact, because I know several of them on that team. They are good, this is all they do, and they do a shit load of them. Nobody, and you can check that fact, nobody in the city is close to what this team does. Nobody.
The dogs were a surprise, nobody knew about them, and at times, stuff happens. Maybe you get ahold of your CI and talk to him, but even then, if the CI does not know, how will the police ever know?
You can't call SWAT out after the fact, and you can't call SWAT for every warrant that everyone does. Nor enough SWAT members, and too many warrants being written. When you do need SWAT, they do a great job, no argument there, but they can not always be used.
So, don't go throwing comments around like "go skydiving" for excitement, because that is just ignorant.
You obviously do not know this team and you obviously not on scene to see how this happened.
Maybe you can just focus some positive energy on the injured officer and wish him well as he recovers.
Use a little common sense there....

stop the SWAT shit already. We are all the police, and will handle it. SWAT needs to continue training for a Mumbai style incident. Then we will really need them.

I'm sure the guy who did it feels like shit. It was not the smartest thing to do-granted. I'm sure the two officers have had a relationship before and hopefully will continue being at least cordial in the future. God bless all involved.
These guys are a Search Warrant team. This is their job. They have probably executed 200 or more warrants this year so its not about ego. They cant call SWAT all the time. They would never get anything done. Secondly,SWAT is not an automatic thing. You need to meet a certain critera in regards to the target and his residence.

However, they move slow and systematically through a house. This is very safe and I realize that. On a dope warrant though, like this one, you have to get in as fast as possible.

We used SWAT this morning on RHODES, we didn't break a sweat, didn't even stub a toe; and in the end, THEY thanked US for calling and using them.
the problem here is this:
this society of policing is only about 7% the other 93% are just here for the meal ticket. The 7% are here for the meal ticket also, however these 7% are carrying the slack for everyone else. and you have these suck hole bosses that were never the police, and preach that they are. So when the 7% do come in with good work, the Sergeant in charge has no idea on how to reward them ie, honorable, dc, valor awards, etc. .....
If dope in the toilet is your only concern why don't you head it off at the pass? Send a copper with a net to intercept it at the catch basin. If that's your sole purpose for endangering each other, work smarter not harder.
If you move too fast you can't affectively discriminate your targets. You can only move as fast and as accurate as you can shoot.

No doubt you are an IDIOT!! I was one of the patrol officers on the scene and the incident your talking about was at 76th and Bishop. Thank God SWAT was there you MORON!!! Just because there SWAT that means there not supposed get shot? On that day SWAT got shot instead of us. One SWAT officer was shot and he still ended up killing the guy at 76th and Bishop along with three other SWAT guys. SWAT was called out after this crazed gunman shot at over 50 police officers and was running and shooting for over 45 minutes through backyards and alleys around 76th and Bishop. This nut case even shot at the police helicopter. SWAT responded and set up and crazy south side gangbanger tried to get away by shooting at SWAT. The SWAT guy that got shot stepped in the way so he wouldn't be able to continue. So shut your mouth, you know nothing go back to doing the crossword puzzle.
For all the idiot moron monday morning qb's out there, screw you. SWAT is a good tool but on a average SW, not needed. The officers there are professionals and good officers. Ball busting is in order of course, and knowing the guys on that team, it WILL happen and it will be all in fun.
What the deaprtment needs to purchase is the Remington 870 with the 14 inch barrel for use in search warrants. They are short enough to use in close quartes and will definately hit their target. The remington 870's are supposed to be used on a search warrant anyway. That's why the department traians with them. Keep the rifle, give me mt shotgun any day. Rack it and it gets everybody's attention instantly.

Wrong Wrong Wrong!!! No matter how fast you move, the subjects inside will always move faster when it comes to picking up a gun and shooting your dumb ass. You should only be doing warrants for large amount of dopes which the offender will not be able to flush. Furthermore, if your worried about evidence being flushed that is why you break the window in the bathroom and cover that area from the outside as your search team is breaking down the door, that is why you need ladder teams, thus SWAT. Don't want to use SWAT cause your ego is so fragile. What do I know over 100 DA in Iraq.

You are talking about a different incident. This team, the A/2 Narcotics Team, they had two of their own get shot this summer, and that is what the original poster was referring to.
Listen, accidents happen. And that is what this was. These guys, they are good and they do a ton of warrants. It comes down to the law of averages, when you start doing 300 warrants a year, not all of them are going to go smoothly. It is simple math.

"special" weapons so that an IMMEDIATE perimeter can be established while you are summoned to respond.Updates can be streamed to you via PDT or A Citywide. Then when you arrive on scene,you can be briefed and go do your thing.
This isnt about who's MP-15 is shinier or who's uniform looks more intimidating,THIS IS ABOUT COOPERATIVE POLICE ACTIVITYS. So relax Sheila,we'll call you if we need you. In the mean time Office enjoy your Xmas,and we will go easy on your Partner......

ok let me clarify some things since i have first hand knowledge of all the above events....
first off... I agree that SWAT is a wonderful tool in certain circumstances.. this Search Warrant would not be one of them.
bullet went through dog, bounced off floor and struck SM. I was there..
"no doubt you are an IDIOT!!" - harsh statement since the "shoot out" referred too was not the incident you are talking about... and your information is wrong.. you sure you were there at 79th and Bishop not 76th and Bishop... Again I was there in the middle of that incident right next to tact officers that initiated the "stop". Funny I don't remember this guy running around too much.. pretty much was hunkered down in one yard... yes he did make his way to second flight of stairs on back porch, but wasn't "running through backyards and alleys." Thank You SWAT (AK and team) for ending situation the correct way.
"shoot out" was search warrant at 112th street on July 16th 2009 were 2 Narcotics officers from same team as this warrant were shot executing search warrant. again I was there...
see I really hate Monday Morning QB's, uniformed PO's that talk trash to other PO's and PO's that take credit for other PO's work...
again not to beat a dead horse... this team has been in 3 shootings since team was formed just over a year ago. Team is a search warrant team that has performed over 225 warrants in just over a year... 3 team members have been shot on team in just over a year... really to state on a blog that they are "too proud" and "egos" get in the way pisses me off... probably one of the most productive teams in the city.. and for what to beat trash talked by their very own brothers and sisters... thats real nice...

SCC - I was hoping that you can update this story about the Officer (SM) [aka Big Dirty] and his condition but I also would like to interject just one more point about this situation as well.
First, and most importantly - the Officer. Please let the people know that although it said the Officer went home in the news, and although we (the CPD) now seem to treat being shot while at work as just another daily occurrence and occupational hazard (which I know it is) I hope some, if not most, will realize it is not just another mundane occurrence.
This Officer is in pain, at home, and right now is having problems feeling anything below his knee, the area where the bullet went in. So while they did a great job at Christ to ensure his life was not threatened, and that he would be "okay" they released him only to see a follow up doctor.
It seems that as soon as somebody from news affairs says that the officer was treated and realized nobody really gives it a second thought. All the members of the CPD should know better than this, how many times have you seen people shot? We tend to disregard people and think things will be okay without giving it a second thought - this is not the case in this incident. So I ask that you please think about this Officer and know that he has a long way to go before he will be "okay".
My other point, once again after reading the 44 comments of this thread, the thread took another patented CPD theme of "I'm the best cop" which is almost as pathetic as the Bruce Willis movie Striking Distance, a horrible movie about "I'm the best cop" syndrome.
If anything, it is Christmas time, you really should be thinking about how lucky this officer is/was (even with his current status) and just stated your well wishes. Was there any need to start Monday morning quarterbacking?
Do you really think this team went into a warrant knowing that they would face two Pit Bulls, used in dog fighting so they were extra aggressive and ready to attack? Do you really think that they did not call SWAT because they were "too proud" or that they needed "more excitement" in their lives and should that they should have left "the ego for the women and the bars"? That is what you come up with?
SWAT would have been called if the the officers knew about everything BEFORE the warrant was executed. The team has no egos, in fact, I would say they are quite the opposite of a team of ego's. They had two officers get shot while executing a warrant in July, so if any team would call SWAT for help, this team would.
SWAT are great when you use them, no complaints there. You have to realize that although it would surly be better to use SWAT for every warrant written in the city, it just will not happen - that is a pipe dream. So then, what do you do? Do you just stop because you can't use SWAT?
This team was put together to do search warrants, that is all they do. When you do close to 300 warrants in a year the law of averages says that you can expect a few things to happen: good hits, negative hits, hits without incident and hits with incidents. It is bound to happen, it cannot be controlled, but in the end you hope to be higher in the hits without incidents then you are in the hits with incident.
Anyway, wish the Officer well - that is all that really matters. He needs well wishes and sadly News Affairs will not tell you that but I will, his teammate.
