Help an Evanston Cop

An off-duty motorcycle crash a few weeks ago, we got this letter from a friend of Joe Bush:
  • An elderly motorist turned left in front of Joe and despite my friend's efforts to avoid the crash, he was thrown off the bike and sustained serious injuries. Joe was taken to the Lutheran General Hospital where he flatlined several times during first few hours after the accident. Since then doctors were able to stabilize Joe's condition. However, almost a month after the accident, Joe is still in medically induced coma, battling infections and fever which prevent doctors from performing surgeries to repair Joe's fractured pelvis and hip.

Joe is a father of two awesome kids, the brother of a Skokie cop and the son of a retired Evanston firefighter. Joe served as a patrolman, Tact officer and, just few weeks before the accident, got the transfer order to the detective bureau.
There's a blood drive organized:
  • The date of the Blood Drive and Fund Raiser is Monday, December 14th, 2009 from 11:00am-6:00pm at the Evanston Fire Department Headquarters located at 909 Lake Street, Evanston IL. Contact Detective Tracy Williams from Evanston Police at 847-833-5217 to schedule an appointment or Sabina Schleiss from LifeSource at 847-682-8394 for appointments or any other questions. Appointment preferred but walk-ins welcome.
And here's a link to follow his fight:

I can't donate my blood, but if there's something else I can volunteer for, please post.

Speaking of helping out fellow officers...is anyone putting together something for the Cozzi family for Christmas. Do they need airfare to go see Bill? Money? Gifts?

Joe is a great guy and a hard working cop...I believe they are setting up a fund for his medical expenses over and above insurance.

Densey Cole and his wife were able to come to the Christmas Party last night for the 022nd District. He looked pretty good and was in absolutely fantastic spirits, as only Densey could.
However, he related to a handful of officers that the city is really beginning to stroke him on getting him the stuff he needs to make his existence. Every request is turning into a big fight with the people responsible for making arrangements for him. Does anyone know who is the clout person we can call to cut through the red tape and get his requests done in a timely fashion?

Another example of people not paying attention while driving and the inevitable result is another fellow motorcyclist in the hospital in bad shape. It's a damn shame but I see potential accidents waiting to happen every day I go out riding. Too many people talking on their phones, texting, playing with their iPods, reading, eating, etc. and not paying attention to the road. Hope he gets well soon.

If anyone would like to help Joe in any other way than donating blood, please click on the link provided by SCC - "Get well Joey Bush". You will find updates on Joe's condition. There is also an address where donations can be sent by mail as well as a Paypal button (link) that will allow you to safely donate on line.

Also there is another blood drive in Joe's name set up, in Woodridge on the 15th. More details can be found on "Get well Joey Bush" site.

Whatever happened to taking care of those injured or killed in the line of duty? It's a moral as well as a legal obligation.

I recently read a book about a policeman, Antonio Pingitore, shot and killed in Kenosha in 1919, leaving behind a wife and eight children. Among the things the city did was to buy a house for his widow and children! This was before welfare and social security.

Why not now?

Yep, but old people don't talk on phones, read, text, have iPods, or eat while driving. They simply are not physically capable of driving safely, and yet NO ONE - not politicians, not family members, not ANYONE, ever does anything about it. Get the goddam elderly OFF THE ROAD!

We all know it but we're too afraid to admit that when we see a beige 4-door widebody sedan, we know what's driving it before we even see the gray hair. It's usually going 10mph (at least) under the already underposted speed limit, straddling lanes, and weaving slowly back and forth while the driver has a death grip on the wheel, head tilted back, eyes squinting, mouth open, about 4" from the dashboard and they still can't see shit.

How many people do elderly drivers kill a year? I bet it's a significant number.

Evanston is not known for taking care of injured officers. When we think we have it bad, just talk to someone from another department.
Our system is not perfect, but compared to some, it is not bad.

Joe Bush is a great cop, co-worker, and father. You can go to the link provided below for other options to help the family or call the E.P.D. front desk 847-866-5000. A fund has been set up to help his family out. E.P.D. officers are going to go Christmas shopping for the kids and family with the donated funds.

God Bless

I am a friend and fellow co-worker of Joe's. He a damn good cop and an even better friend. Keep the prayers coming!!! We have a blood drive coming tomorrow and if you can give blood please do. Money is set up for his kids so they can be kids and just enjoy the holidays with less worry. His medical bills are going to be a bit**. We never think about these things until it's too late and as long as we stay one unit ... We'll get through this together. God Bless!!

Thank to all the Officer who came out for the Blood drive in Evanston on 12-14-09. It was a huge success, it was great to see how all the brothers and sister in blue came together. We collected over 200 units of blood. Each unit will save 3 lives, just like it saved the life of Detective Joe Bush. The second drive we did on 12-15-09 in Woodridge was also great. There we collected 33 units of blood. On behalf of Joe Bush family an the Evanston Police, Thanks.
