The most dangerous stretches of streets around 12 Chicago public schools will be protected by the "eyes and ears" of paid citizen safety patrols under one phase of a $60 million anti-violence campaign unveiled Tuesday.
Such groups also will be called upon to function as paid, pseudo "truancy officers," visiting the homes of truant kids at 38 of the system's most violent schools to find out why students are cutting school.
- Under the plan -- bankrolled with two consecutive years of $30 million in federal stimulus dollars -- this school year $18 million will be focused on the 38 high schools with the biggest violence problems and plans their administrators and other have written to create a "culture of calm" on their campuses, Huberman said.

I know 3 guys on CPD, all with 25 years or more, all over 55. All 3 jumped on the early retirement that was offered. These guys work in different districts/area, different watches. Question...does anyone else remember several years ago, after an outcry about the violence against all the school children, how the parents of said children were going to come out in force (at no expense to taxpayers) at school arrival and dismissals, and finally take responsibility for their own children. The "revs" were all behind this, I think the proposal even had a name. It was going to stop all the violence, and save the kids.

You would think that at least one media outlet would step up and call bullshit on this whole program, Instead, silence, until the tragedy comes and we all know it’s coming.

Are the sex offenders lining up in droves for the signs? This entire idea is utterly ridiculous. There will be no oversite on any level. For example, whose homes are these kids going into? What gangbangers are going to be using this "safe passage" program to recruit new gang members or identify kids from opposing gangs. Lawsuits by the "safe passage" workers getting beaten, shot or worse. I can immediately think of fifteen things off the top of my head that is wrong with this but the press or politicians can't?
You have to jump through hoops to become a CPS teacher because you work with kids (physicals, certifications, fingerprints, etc.) but the Mayor is going to create another fully functioning ad hoc branch of the CPS administration structure (that has no rules or regulations) as a result of the endless meetings that have whipped allegedly educated, high-functioning policymakers into a frenzy of nonsense. It is a VIGILANTE program. You are giving authority to street people, most of whom will have the intelligence of Hennessy Williams. Your typical job applicant will be uneducated (except for street culture) who do not or have never worked, who most likely have drug and alcohol problems that will end up creating more chaos and controversy than any of us will ever imagine. The SAME people who are responsible for CAUSING the problems and violence this "program" is intended to correct because they let their kids run the streets like feral animals.

If Supt. Weis had any balls at all, he should be offended that the CPD was PASSED OVER for this grant money where it would be better utilized, go farther, have a more positive outcome and could be tracked and measured for efficacy. Since those measures were not even considered, and this money was dispensed to be used at Daley's discretion speaks for itself. And for Daley to give this money to anyone other than those professionals who are obligated and paid to create a "culture of calm" is irresponsible and I hope it blows up in Daley's face.
