A man was dead on the street early this morning in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, and police have started a death investigation.

There were no immediate signs of injury on the man, so police do not yet know what caused the death.

At about 12:29 a.m., police responded to the 4600 block of South Ashland Avenue and found the man unresponsive, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

The man was taken to area hospital but was pronounced dead, Gaines said.

Meanwhile...amazing what a real police chief, a real DA and a real mayor can do...

Milwaukee recorded 72 homicides in 2009, one more killing than occurred in the city in 2008, according to figures provided by the Milwaukee Police Department.

The 2008 and 2009 homicide totals represent the lowest yearly totals in Milwaukee since 1985, when 70 people were murdered in the city.

Milwaukee averaged about 117 homicides per year between 1985 and 2008, according to data from the city's Police Department. The highest single-year total was in 1991, when 168 homicides occurred. Milwaukee police do not count vehicular homicides or those ruled justified.

The statistical consistency between 2008 and 2009 could be evidence that long-term programs aimed at reducing violence in the city are beginning to pay off, said Milwaukee County District Attorney John T. Chisholm .

Recording low homicide totals in back-to-back years is "a real achievement," Police Chief Edward A. Flynn said.

Good cooperation among the Police Department, the federal government, the district attorney's office and the community also has played a role in the decrease in homicides, Flynn said.

Mayor Tom Barrett said he had made public safety one of his priorities as mayor.

You know it's funny. About a week before New Year's Eve, commander of 011 came into roll call and said she'd be "out there" with us on the 31st. Ummm....I sure as hell didn't see her when the shit started hitting the fan at the end of 3rd watch. Of course, what she probably meant to say was that she was going to have her 3 year wonder secretary who likes to try to tell the Captains how to run their watches, out driving her around. And by the way, Henny Penny, don't be upset that Chief Wigam would do a better job than you. Did the ET get anything back on those prints yet? Hahahahaha!

The hell with the south part of city, what about the 017 district. The crime rate is out of control and so is the commander MIKE MEALER. The powers downtown dumped the 011 district commander for his rising crime rate, don"t you think 017 needs a new commander. We also hear that the 3rd watch capt. has now changed his used car sales to selling his old used uniforms and used shoes to the 017 district coppers. NOW WE KNOW BARN-ASS HAS SERIOUS ISSUES WITH MONEY!! JUST PLAIN CHEAP!

Sad to say because many like him, and he does seem to be a genuinely nice guy, but the facts speak for themselves. He has been merit from square one.

He was a merit sergeant and a merit lieutenant. And we all know that each and every captain and commander is essentially merit, so you can file his entire career after patrol officer under MERIT and, who knows, he probably had push to get a start on the job.

Yes, yes, yes, I know, he's a good guy in a sea of exempt fools, but a bright bulb he has never been.

A happy and healthy new year to Ruth "#1 Fan" Wedster. As a commander assigned to Research and Developement she has absolutely no job but to stay hidden. She is commander of the paper clips. Research and Developement already has a Director (civilian commander rank) but Ruth needs to be taken care of, so she now gets an office, a car, commander's pay, a staff, and nothing to do. I mean NOTHING. It's like having two commanders in a district but one of them just sits in the janitor's closet. Good use of money Masters and Jody. Re: 12/31/09, 11:21 AM.

For your information, in case you have not completed a report in a while, there are boxes on the report for date and time. Also on a death an R.D. number is assigned. So, when the death is re-classified to a Homicide the only thing that changes is the offense/classification. Not the date, time, year or R.D. number. Hence, the Homicide will be counted in the same year as the original death report.

How do you KNOW it is not a crime scene? Until you investigate it, it might just be an accident. Or he may have been thrown under the train, or was being chased.

Also, Mr. Jump-to-obvious-conclusion, the CTA is involved. That means that the NTSB is going to scrutinize the reports. There also is the angle of City liability involved. A sloppy investigation could come to light in the inevitable civil lawsuit and cost the city $M's.

Not everything is a "19-Paul, can I get some lunch."

What happened? There were close to 15 posters here who saw the dead guy on Ashland. Everyone saw the injuries...knew the full details...were all up on the case. And then Dr. Jones, who just finished a big fight with Daley, says aneurysm. Could it be that some of the posters here lie and just try to sound "in the know". Lots of Sneed wannabes on this job.

A Wisconsin man will settle his differences with you in a fair fist fight, not a cowardly shooting. That is why the homicide rate is so low in Wisconsin. We settle our differences man to man, face to face and knuckle to knuckle. Not the cowardly way you do.

Duh.

Note to whoever wrote this: The same gangs and the same gangbangers and their guns and knives that plague Chicago are also active in southeast Wisconsin. It's just that we seem to have a little better luck in controlling the outcome because of support from the mayors, chiefs and citizens. (From time to time we also get some much appreciated help from CPD, especially with gang intel.)

Chief Flynn is the real deal. If you do your job the right way there's no confusion over whether he'll back you. He's politically savvy but not afraid of being politically incorrect.

As far as crime and criminals, the entire stretch of landscape around the lake from Berrien County, Michigan (and St. Joseph County, Indiana for that matter) to Milwaukee County and its suburbs can essentially be viewed as the same territory. Same gangs, dirtbags, etc. Do you really think they pay attention to jurisdictional boundaries? Surprisngly they make more sense in their operations than police agencies do. If you belief in turf wars, then do yourself and the public a favor and get the fuck out of law enforcement. You don't fight crime with politics and/or one hand tied behind your back.

Surprisingly, for as utterly dumb as the post seems, it's not altogether inaccurate. In some of the rural areas of the state the local dirtbags will often say "please" and "thank you" but they are cut from a different cloth. Probably the best thing that could be done with those mopes is to build a jail wing onto a vocational school. However, even that is fading away due to Asian gang actvity in such places as Green Bay and Wausau. (Yes, times are changing.)

Keep up the good work, SCC.

For those of you who may be interested; today I put in my retirement request for the 55-59 year old premium health care plan. I was number 461. There is going to be a mass exodus of officers from the department in 2010 starting April 1st. I've been told that Area Three Detectives is losing 17 detectives, Area Five is losing 8 detectives.

Hey don't worry. They will just detail more people to the area from the watch. I understand the D-unit is short, But where else would they get manpower other then patrol. no big deal, instead of promoting people to detective. The citys way of saving money.

GOOD COPS SICK AND TIRED OF BEIN THE POLITICAL POLICE FOR THE CRIMINAL DALEY, And his band of Pay-to-Play CPD Supervisors.

Well said, Kudos to you, Happy New Year.

Back in the early nineties some counts and bishops were fighting . They chased one shit up to the the 18th cta platform. The shit ran into a cta train and the other shithead began shooting at the departing train. A innocent woman aboard the train was shot on the neck. The motorman stopped the train at the next station and waited for police and fire. Upon the dicks arriving on the scene they started yelling at the motorman on why did he move the train from the original crime scene where the lady was shot. Thank God the motorman was pretty sharp and told the dicks he was in fear for the rest of the passengers and decided to move the train to a safer location. Needless to say that train was out of service for several hours. So a CTA bus or train cannot be moved just because they provide public transportation. Haven't you ever heard of shuttle buses from point A to point B because a part of the tracks are out of service you GOOF!!!

1/01/2010 12:48:00 AM

No! That's not what my FTO said.

1/01/2010 10:38:00 PM

SURE they may be re-classified at a later time, BUT, if they report 452 murders THIS YEAR, and they reclassify the numbers NEXT YEAR, no one is going to pay attention when 50 or 60 "Death investigations" are reclassified for the PRIOR YEAR!!!!!

South Side gunshot victim dies
January 2, 2010 6:20 AM | 2 Comments
A 28-year-old South Side man has died after being shot, officials said.

David Davis, of the 6100 block of South Ingleside Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:05 p.m. Friday at University of Chicago Hospitals, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

She did not have information available about when or where Davis was shot.

Chicago Police Sgt. Karla Chaplin said detectives have opened a investigation into the death and that there is no indication yet that a homicide took place.

SINCE WHEN DID GUNSHOT VICTIMS SHOW NO INDICATION THAT A HOMICIDE TOOK PLACE????????????

And another douchebag wrote:

OK--let's compare the numbers (2008 crime rate per 100K population)

Murder-Chicago 18.0/Milwaukee 11.8
Robbery- 588.6/532.6
Agg Assault-602.0/639.9
Burglary -920.4/1064.4
Veh Theft-670.4/1055.9
Officers -472.2/334.8

With the exception of murders (Milwaukee wins), Vehicle thefts (Chicago wins--can't those cheeseheads lock their cars?), and number of sworn officers (Chicago has 137.4 more), the numbers are fairly close.

There are cautionary notes in the FBI stats about Illinois' recordkeeping (except for Rockford) not complying with national standards. Also unknown is how the unfilled vacancies impact the CPD number of sworn personnel stats.

Bottom line: the 1/10th the number of dirtbags is inaccurate and stop bashing brothers in blue. Everyone is in the same boat.
