Suburban Shooting
- Two police officers remained hospitalized Monday evening after being beaten by a man who was subsequently shot to death by police in south suburban Calumet City.
[...] A 25-year-old female officer responding to the scene spotted the man outside of the building and exited her vehicle when the man approached and began beating her in the face, Gilmore said. A 41-year-old male officer attempted to intervene and he attacked him as well.
Officers struck the man with a Taser twice, but it still did not subdue him, Gilmore said. He knocked the male officer to the ground and continued beating the female officer when the male officer drew his weapon and fired twice, fatally wounding the suspect.
Anyone else think that officers are being given too many force options to choose from and it's costing them precious reaction time?

ANYBODY using a taser on someone dressed for this kind of cold isn't thinking, period. Coats, sweaters and other layers keep the points from penetrating or even making contact with the skin.
SHOOT the scum if he's beating your partner and can't be restrained. We're the ones who are supposed to go home at the end of the tour. HE gets no such guarantees.

in the last 25 years, I have seen shootings by police at least quadruple.....Agg bats to P.O. more than quadruple (that includes reporting just a punch or two---it would be up 20 fold since 1985...)

Yes, too many force options. The liberals say: all life is precious and needs to be respected (except for the unborn, I guess, but that is something else) even if it is the poor, poor criminal.
Well, the criminal does not hold life in high regard and because of it, the use of force options should be as swift as the actions of a criminal and at least one level above those same actions.
And the liberal, in every job I have had where he/she is the victim of a violent crime, wants the same violence to befall his/her perpetrator.
YES, way too many options and way too much coddling! This behavior does not end criminal actions, it enables them!

Calumet City has turned into a shithole extension of the southside of Chicago. 15 or 20 years ago it was a nice, clean, and quiet 'burb with lots of good restaurants, bars, shops, and other retail businesses, all anchored by the River Oaks Mall.
Very sad what's become of it.

Key phrase, yet again, is the Taser DID NOT WORK. Im on the job out in Davenport, IA and I hope everyone sees the shooting video involving one of our officers who used his Taser on a man. It didnt work and the man proceeded to knock the officer down and BITE OFF HIS EYEBROW and smash hit head into the pavement. The only thing that saved him was an off duty copper from Illinois who drove by and intervened, allowing our officer to put two into the bad guy. If you havent seen it, you need to. go to you tube and type in "Centennial Bridge Shooting." A sobering reminder to all who are on "the job" The video is dashcam with audio and shows the entire thing from start to death.

Why do police need anything besides an impact weapon and a firearm? Maybe pepper spray?

This being said, I think more people need to evaluate there career choices, be it male or female. This can be a VERY physical job at time, as a matter of fact-life threatening. If you are undersized or mild tempered and non-confrontational then this probably isn't for you.
There is a young "officer," and I use the term begrudgingly, hiding in 022 whom should NOT be on this job. Don't know what her connection is but she left a partner for dead while working in 007 as PPO a short time ago.
We maybe short handed, but I will take quality over quantity any day of the week. This goes for the morbidly obese or careless and old. Seniority is a great thing and essential, but when is enough enough?
This stuff can happen anywhere at anytime.

Yep box chevy nothing like a 5 cell,but I prefer the "D" cell! Made a great extra tool to put down criminals!
Tasers are the use of force of choice for a lot of guys now because of the lawsuits. It's a lot easier to explain the 2 little barb marks on a suspects back than to explain why the guys teeth are lodged in your baton. Plus a lot of these mutts are afraid of being tased, because they now you'll do it, versus adminstering a well deserved beating.
That being said, they are not wonder weapons. We had one fail on an arrest because the barbs didn't make contact, and all the guy was wearing was a really baggy shirt. So you'd better have option 2 ready to go in a jiffy!
Let's be safe in the New Year, there are a ton of people who have no fear or respect for the police, and will test you and take you if they can.

The 3 Cell "D" Cell was more controllable.smoother in deployment and did FAR MORE ATTENTION GETTING........

In case you have forgotten the reason you don't get to have saps and other highly effective close-in impact weapons is because of past misuse.
The same process is happening with Tasers due to a relatively few cases of inappropriate use.
You only have more choices if you listen to the dumb asses in the department. Beat or don't beat and kill or don't kill big deal as long as I go home at the end of the night
I think the Dept needs to drop the tasers and invest in the "Brooklyn Crusher" (http://www.bigplanetgear.com/catalog/product.asp?pid=61645&ret_id=1089039) You can't go wrong with one of these baby's and there only $20. I keep one in my trunk for last resort.

I heard this about her, but never heard the real full story. Please enlighten us as to what exactly happened. How crazy is that though? She totally f**ks up, and then gets rewarded by being sent to 022 and getting the hell outta Englewood! CPD at it's finest!
