Another BS Headline

The media continues its slow death. Headline in the Tribune:
Oh no, everyone is thinking, here we go again. Then when you read the story:
  • Jacobs [the deceased] was driving eastbound on 112th Street when her Kia Rio sedan went through a stop sign and drove into the intersection of 112th and Kedzie Avenue, Lesniak said.

Jacob's car was then struck by the off-duty female officer who was driving a Dodge Durango truck southbound on Kedzie, Lesniak said. The Durango was the officer's personal car, Lesniak said.

So the dead woman was the at-fault vehicle. And now it's coming out she may have had a seizure and been dead while the car was rolling through the stop sign. So what purpose does it serve naming the occupant of the other car (who is a VICTIM in this case) as a CPD member?

Fortunately, a larger number of people call out the Trib for it's obvious bias in the comment sections. The headline over at the Sun Times isn't much better, but the comments run the same direction as the Trib's - stop the BS.

Maybe the tide is turning subtly our way again?

Typical headline it's becoming that every story has something involving what a Police officer does or doesn't do. This is truly a pathetic way of trying to sell trash.

While the Trib headline is more misleading than the ST's, the ST article is very misleading.

Only after reading about the Sgt's car colliding, T-boning the dead person's car do we read that the Sgt. had the right of way and the other car blew a stop sign. NO mention of a possible medical condition, either.

As many posters to both of the papers sites have stated. Why the need to post the occupation of the driver of the car who was not at fault.

It seems that the job of the media is to sensationalize every story possbile and to perpetuate hatred/fear between the police and the citizens, between different races, and different cultures.

If any facts happen to be in the story they present, then consider it a bonus.

Would that Lesniak be any relation to the former boss Dennis Lesniak? Of course, if she is related, I am sure her relations to any present or former boss had nothing at all to do with her being in a comfortable and soft office job. She deserves it, no doubt.

We are all aware of the exempts taking 24 days off unpaid next year. Too fucking bad. However, you may not be aware that the exempts have been assured by the City law department that the days off will not count against their pension, their pension will be reflected by the amount of their budgeted position, regardless of what they make. The result of this will be exempts receiving a full pension on their budgeted amount but actually paying in 10% less each pay check and the city matching 10% less each time. The only people who get shorted here are the other members of the pension, who pay their full share. It is likely that this furlough day nonsense will go on for a few more years, at least. This money which the exempts are shorting us is going to add up at the expense of the collective bargaining members. Where is the Pension Board Rep's on this one. How can the city guarantee what our pensions pay out? Is the city making up the difference?

We need some answers here. This is our money which the city and the exempts are getting a 10% discount on at our expense. I don't want to hear any crying that the chosen ones already have to take an exrta 24 days off. They sold their soul for the gold star, now wallow in it. If its so bad, turn it in and get paid as a Lt. or Captain. Either way, I refuse to once again take the hit in my already depressed pension so some political hack gold star doesn't go hungry.

I wonder how many stories involving media types are quietly buried deep within the print media.

Several years ago I was on duty when a t.v. reporter was struck by auto. She was lucky, only minor injuries. But after she hit the ground she was immediately surrounded by all her fellow journalist. Here you have a person, a fellow reporter, who was just struck by a car and her fellow journalists are jockeying for position with their cameras and microphones to get the story!

When I arrived at the hospital, waiting outside her room waiting to talk to her, I over heard her boss talking to her. He advised her not to watch the news for the next few days because she'll be the top story.

This woman starting crying! She couldn't understand why THEY were doing this to her. She actually could not understand why she was the story.

So here you have, for one brief moment, a journalist finding herslf on the other side of the story......and crying that she doesn't like it and that it's JUST NOT FAIR!

Major Accidents knew the Sgt was not at fault and he/she was not under the influence (on the way home from work). This through their own personal observation and witness statements.

However, they feared all the media pressure and they were too scared to make the call themselves, (that the Sgt was not at fault or under the influence) so they wanted the Watch Commander to come to the scene to VERIFY that the Sgt was not under the influence. When the Watch Commander wouldn't, another Lt on the scene did.

WHY???? That's not how the order reads.

Try doing your job next time and not pass the buck. Aren't you the experts? Isn't that why you're assigned to Major Accidents?

When is someone going to put the media's feet to the fire on this issue (besides SCC)?

Headlines like these are just as damaging as ones that read: "black man kills white man" or "illegal Mexican commits murder" or woman driver causes 15 car pileup” or "gay man commits rape".

For some reason the media gets a play on this crap when it’s obvious to me that it should all be lumped in together. If it’s wrong to point out someone’s race, sex or creed as some type of precursor of why this alleged crime may have occurred, then logic should lead a person to believe that a person's career should not be used as a way to prejudge them either.

Especially in a town where the media has adopted a policy that intentionally deletes the race of a described offender provided by the police. I also notice that the local media doesn't have a problem providing the sex of a described offender while leaving out the race. If it’s considered prejudicial to provide race then shouldn't it be considered sexist to provide the sex? Why does the media get to determine what is socially accepted and not?

By the standard set by the local media a description of a wanted offender should go something like this: "A person, 5'10", 180lbs wearing whatever did something very bad at this address". “Call police if you have further info”.

I don't think were really that far away from this type of crap. At least they should be consistent if they're going to determine what is socially acceptable.

I guess this is just further example of the type of crappy people that are employed by the local media outlets. Is there a single person of integrity left in the media?

Lesniak met her when she was a bartender and "artist". He made a fool out of himself and got her on the job. She was in 012 as a PPO. She was known as Renae Parker back then. He was the Area 4 Deputy Chief and would routinely pick up this seasoned 2nd watch PPO in his car when she was working, interfere with her assignments, and generally make a fool out of himself. It was a big part of his forced retirement. After a year as a hard charging 12th District 2nd watch officer, she vanished from the district, married Lesniak and was reborn as Gabrielle Lesniak. The above comment completes the narrative from there. She was one of the most obnoxious PPO's I've met.

The car for some reason pullsd right into the intersection in front of the Sgt. She didn't even have time to react. She was very devestated and did not go to the hospital until at least an hour after the accident because she was more worried about the other driver, who was at fault. I and a few other coppers who live right where it happened were right there. The woman who died had to either had have a problem with her vehicle or something caused her medically to not stop. It was a tragedy but unavoidable. I know the news was all over the area, but if someone mentioned the sgt. was the other driver it had to have been someone who overheard the police doing the investigation. Every copper, on duty and off, would have never given that information to the press. But somehow they found out and news affairs verified the information. It was a tragedy for both the driver who died and for the Sgt. She has to live with that, even though she could have done nothing to avoid the collision. She didn't even have time to react. It's shameless that the press drags the police thru the mud, even when no is no fault on their part. I hope the Sergeant realizes there was nothing at all she could do. For all anyone knows there could have been a medical condition with the woman who the sergeant struck that was a direct cause leading to her death. It is a dangerous intersection, which has a major blind spot for cars on Kedzie and on 112th Pl. If anyone is to blame it is the politicians we have been complaining to for the last 3-4 years of the problem. Everyone of them says they are going to do something to increase safety at this intersection. The fact that it is also a school crossing, where the crossing guard has almost been hit a few times should matter, but as usual politics is all bullshit. now after this watch, there will be stop signs or a traffic light within months. If the family of the deceased woman wants to blame anyone, they should blame the politicians who keep turning a deaf ear to the complaints we have made over and over. This could have been avoided, but not Ginger, the mayor's office or state care to look into it and take action. Hell you take your life into your hands just trying to cross Kedzie. All in all I hope the sergeant is able to heal and not hold herself to blame. She had no chance to avoid any of this. It was just a unavoidable tragedy. Cars have run into houses, children have been struck and parked cars are constntly hit, besides the constant t-bone accidents which occur at this intersection. Maybe now one of the politicians will finally step up. I'm not holding my breath though. God bless you sarge. Please don't let this haunt you. It was not your fault.

Phew! Thanks for straightening that one out. The DiMaggios of the police department. I was wondering. We sure get plenty of the Spinks Brothers type too.

You know, this could be a permanent topic, a CPD All In The Family. It throws one off when they change the last name, a wife of an anointed one marries, like when a Daley becomes a Vanecko.

An organizational chart of the CPD upper echelon and their family ties would be an interesting read, sort of like an FBI chart of the Outfit.

It would help explain how someone comes out of complete nowhere to be promoted or to get that job in a specialized unit.

I recall a PPO I was in the academy with, soon after we hit the streets I was humping down to 1121 S State to gun court and I find my academy mate in a suit at HQ working in asset forfeiture. How did it happen I wondered? He told me he was good at it, the asset forfeiture stuff. Hidden talent I guessed. So it was the DiMaggio effect after all. And the relative who was a clouted judge.

As an old Captain used to tell us, if it weren't for the police department, I would be standing in a factory working on a punch press. Well, that was a long time ago, the punch press workers all work at Wal-Mart now.

Thank Sergeant Edward Wodnicki. A few years back, through his boss at the time, he brought the new wife of his cousin, disgraced former command member Dennis Lesniak, into Information Services at HQ as a secretary. She is a sworn member, and was not needed for any reason at all. She had no IT education or experience, so they could not even disguise it or bullshit anyone. It was a blatant clout move. It amounts to a wasted badge and a wasted paycheck. Now Eddie is long gone from HQ, but "somehow" Gabrielle has managed to survive. Imagine.

1/03/2010 12:57:00 PM

Thanks for shedding some light on her, I thought there might be a connection. I sure wouldn't want to cause any embarrassment on Monday morning to the wife/former wife/girlfriend/bartender of an anointed one.

You couldn't expect her to be out there writing parkers in the cold or making traffic stops in 007. News Affairs, very well deserved, no doubt.

As a rule, police get screwed over by the press more than any other occupation and you know it. Just wait til' you find yourself in the trickbag for some nonsensical BS. The only time I've seen coppers screw each other over is on here and that's nothing against SCC as I believe SCC serves a greater good. One day (god forbid)but I know something bad enough will happen that coppers will remember the importance of brotherhood.

If this os how you will treated off duty and innocent, can you imagine on duty and the line is grey. Because a great portion of police work is grey. No thank you.

It's a lose-lose situation. No matter how this is handled, the conspiracy theorists will still be out there call it a cover up.

Go and read the comment section in the Trib on this article. While the majority of the comments are pro police, the negative ones seem to come right out of some fantasy world.

Stringent enforcement of all traffic laws that Trib and Times trucks violate, period. Forget all of the stupid excuses we hear not to do this.

You have to fuck back.

Ya, but can you get a tow truck big enough to tow the delivery vans? LOL!

As i recall it, Lesniak's clout was his father-in-law. When his wife divorced him, he was eventually demoted. While in 022, he wrote a letter to the ASA verifying that a breathalizer was defective in an effort to help a clouted one who was caught in a DUI. The ASA raised a stink about this which led to his downfall. I was at Blackie's on Illinois St a few years back and Dennis was at the bar, a little intoxicated, telling everyone he was a retired deputy chief.

"Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak" issued the statement from CPD.

Would that Lesniak be any relation to the former boss Dennis Lesniak? Of course, if she is related, I am sure her relations to any present or former boss had nothing at all to do with her being in a comfortable and soft office job. She deserves it, no doubt.

It's funny how in the 25 years of so I have been in the employ of the CPD I keep reading the same last names in high places and in good jobs.

The DiMaggio factor at work again. Wodnicki is in Area 3 now.

Thank god Townsend didn't have any kids. Who is opening doors and carrying bags for the mayor these days? He who carries the most bags and opens the most doors will be a future 1st Deputy.

Gee, I wonder. What are the odds that the family of the deceased will find some bottom feeding lawyer to bring yet another merit-less lawsuit against the officer in question and the city?

And of course, since the media saw fit to release the point that the other person involved was an off duty police officer, now there will be countless witnesses who will swear that the officer was at fault.

29 and a day........you can't get here fast enough!

1/03/2010 08:55:00 AM

The odds are fantastic that the bottom feeding lawyer will search for past accidents at that corner and then sue because the city didn't make the needed traffic improvements.

For some additional revenue maybe the City can install parking meters in the alleys and then sell those off. Just an idea. Or how about just invading Evanston, IL and seizing it and selling everything off there? They won't fight too hard, put out free wine and cheese and march on in.

Dude, you have a messed up timeline. Lesniak became a Deputy Chief after 022! The goofy shit he did in 022 did not directly lead to his downfall, and he did a lot of goofy shit while he was there, but it was the sum total of all the very goofy shit he did AFTER 022, plus his requited thirst for Gabby and the unquenchable thirst for the grape, and hops, and brew, and so on.

Wonderful Gabby by some miracle finds a big bag of cannabis, with an offender attached, while working a detail as a ppo by the lake. She brings it to the desk sgt, who tells her she has to hand carry it herself because it was to big to fit in the safe. She tells the desk sgt that she is getting off and doesn't want to work overtime. The sgt tells her to bad that's the way it is. She walks away from the desk, and about 20 minutes later D/C Lesniak comes in, 3 sheets to the wind mind u, and tells the desk sgt, in front of Gabby, could he arrange to have it taken down for her. The desk sgt does what his boss tells him to. All the while this little bitch is smirking in the background, with this I told you so look on her face.
Sure the Sgt could of put up a stink, but it would it have been worth it, to piss of a heavily connected D/C?
But someone said it earlier, she defintely is one of the more arrogant people on this job.
Hopefully the ole saying what goes around comes around, actually is true, because karma is a bitch...

I wish they would sue the city. We have been trying for 3-4 years to get a stop sign at the intersection. The answer, it is only a block and a half from 111th St. Tell that to the poor crossing guard who gets hit almost 3 times a day. Or anyone whose car or house has been hit by one of the cars involved in an accident. You go anywher else in the city and they have stop signs at every block on a major street. We have to hire some of the reverends, maybe they can help. Because Kevin Joyce and Ginger Rugai are worthless as tits on a bull, unless they need a petition signed or votes. They can just pass my house for now on.

To the one poster who asked if it is the intersection with all the boulders in front of the houses, yes it is. But one boulder is missing because a car hit it and shattered into 30 pieces. But it saved the house from having a new doorway.

First, shame on "Grabby" for bringing it in to the desk sergeant and not wanting to finish what she started because it was inconvenient, but she is not the first of her generation that has expected someone else to tidy up after them. Gabby and Dennis must of had an emergency cocktail or two waiting for them somewhere.

Second, in the absence of a direct order from my on-duty boss, I would rather retain my spine than acquiesce to that dope, or any of them. Fuck Dennis and fuck Gabby.

I pray karma pays them a visit more than once.

I agree, strict enforcement on the Tribune and Sun-Times trucks & also on the news vans that park illegally even when they are not on assignment. They write articles on how the Police park illegally but yet they can park wherever they feel by telling the Police that they are on official assignment.
BS!!! Write them all. Let them contest it. We don't get any breaks from the media. Yet they take care of their own with their own "code of silence" when a fellow news personality is arrested.

Besides, wasn't there a rumor back in 1994 about a Tribune or Sun-Times truck commiting an illegal u-turn in front of a 19th District squadcar, causing the squadcar to swerve to avoid the crash and in turn, crashed into a tree resulting in the death of a very respected Officer named John Lyons?
