Backroom Deals

  • Testimony in the federal corruption trial of a Chicago developer on Thursday revealed that U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez met with the developer and Mayor Richard Daley to push for the city's approval of a controversial real estate venture.

Gutierrez's involvement in lobbying Daley to support the project goes a step beyond what the congressman has previously told the Tribune in stories documenting his political and financial relationship with the developer, Calvin Boender, and his unusual role in backing a project outside his congressional district.

We might be mistaken, but this seems to be the first time anyone has actually put Daley at the scene of what may turn out to be some obvious backroom dealing. Gutierrez lying to the media isn't the story - Shortshanks' participation needs to be highlighted and publicized.

Another Hispanic in some sort of controversy. Lets make him the next superintendent. Gutierrez has been no good since the beginning. Ask any copper in Shakespeare in the late 80's early 90's and they will tell you all about it. Drugs and gangs. He went skiing often!

Shortshanks will make sure that whatever federal judge that he or one of his cronies appointed and has this case now will make the decision that he need not testify.

Bank on it.

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, [2] Dow was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by President George W. Bush on July 17, 2007, to a seat vacated by Charles Kocoras. Dow was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 13, 2007 and received his commission on December 5, 2007. [1]

Recommended by Durbin. OK. Still think Daley will have to testify?

You really don't think the Daley cntrolled media will make a big deal about this do you ? And the good bet is the feds were told to ignore this political back door dealing and go find a good cop who has had to do his job with one of Chicago's not so finest and make him/her out to be the worst thing our dipshit supe has ever seen.

Isn't this considered a "secret" meeting? Shouldn't Daley be charged? (Well, we all know he should have been charged well before this)

You guys are such cynics. Look at how well they handled the Blago investigation. Sure they pulled that wire down before they got any good stuff, but hey, you can't take a chance on getting anybody really important on tape can we?

This will all go away for anybody but Ike.

We've been watching the cable TV series "Brotherhood" on DVD sets, starting with Season one. Me and the spouse keep shaking our heads, and saying "wow, just like here in Chicago", "just like Michael Scott", "just like City Hall/Springfield" etc. Though the show is set in Providence, Rhode Island, it could easily just be here in Chicago and Illinois. Corruption is rampant, politicians are solely motivated by personal wealth accumulation, and corrupted power shenanigans dominates our government.

Does the Hispanic coalition have an agenda or are they conspiring to de-throne the Daley machine?

If Luis is willing to testify in Federal Court this could make the Blago trial look like a day in traffic court. Daley would be the big fish to fry, and Blago would walk due to lack of interest.

SCC:

If you had to articulate exactly why this -

"Rep. Luis Gutierrez met with the developer and Mayor Richard Daley to push for the city's approval of a controversial real estate venture."

- is a problem, what would you say? Is the meeting itself a problem? Is the Mayor taking part in such a meeting a problem?

The $200,000 loan...it was actually an agreement for some of the property, then gave him the $200,000 loan to buy that property. It is basically a gift of $200,000 worth of property. That is Chicago politics!

Did'nt Louie have a problem with voter fraud when he was accused of having family members voting from a second floor apartment that was being rented by another family. This incident supposedly occured by St. Elizabeths when he lived near there and was also reported in the news media.

How much free work did the developer do on Gutierrez's place? Didn't he give a job to his sister-in-law? Dirty politics in Chicago lives on and the stupid citizens of Chicago blow-off the primaries. There will be no change unless you vote these thieves out because the first thing on the agenda with these politicians/thieves is THEM$ELV$E$, NOT the consituents.
