TASERs for Everyone
The purchasing contract must have gone through if we're seeing reports like this:
The Chicago Police Department is dramatically expanding its use of Tasers, adding several hundred more and putting them in the hands of patrol officers for the first time, officials said Wednesday.
The "stun guns" will go in every squad car to give front-line beat officers a more effective way to protect themselves and calm a disturbance.
But the electrical devices have caused controversy nationwide, with debates about their safety and lawsuits filed on behalf of dozens of people, some in the Chicago area, who have died after being "Tased."
Just remember, do not compromise your safety for these devices. If you don't get decent contact with the darts, it isn't going to work, and you've just given up cover and shielding while deploying the Taser. Your backup options are very limited and your already non-compliant subject might not be very understanding or disposed to listen to reason since he knows what's coming.

Two .45 caliber rounds to the chest do a much better job "sticking" than two electrical probes ever will.
Just remember to place your rounds "below the nipples"...NOT.
And if your "non-compliant subject" isn't very understanding after that, another round to the head usually cures any animosity towards the police.
Now, all the beats need two cops in each car [and that car being made in the last 18 months], working computers on a smooth running network, tires with treads. You sworn officers do more with less than any friggin gold star or politician could ever do. It's sad to see what has happened to your department. This citizen is grateful.
Could this be a prelude to us all working 99? We aren't far off from it already.
Anybody know if you have to pass the power test to carry a cattle prod?
Let the lawsuits begin!
nothing like putting a "top of the line defense mechanism" in a car with 150,000 miles on it.... can we taser ourselves and go on the medical so we don't have to ride around in these shitboxes that they call beat cars.... down these shit cars and if the w/c beefs, tell him/her to go drive around in it while you go on parking lot security.....
Be ready to switch gears when that thing fails...Break out the OC.
When you cars dies and needs a jump, just taser the battery.
What about the Detectives? Are they going to get tasers?
Why the $500,000.00 grant for tasers and we don't have bullets for weapons training? Pinstripe patronage for Terry H.. Transperency my a$$.
City pepper IS flamable.
Light him up, he will be easy to follow and identify.
The TASER is a very effective weapon in many circumstances.
It is an outstanding weapon in some circumstances.
The TASER is NOT, however, an ideal weapon in ALL circumstances.
Given the time and opportunity to properly look at and evaluate the circumstances will determine if a TASER should or should not be deployed, BUT you should never get into a position where you hesitate as to which weapon to pull in a split second situation. Then, you should fall back on your training and go for the duty weapon.
Look on the bright side, maybe you could use the tasers to jump start the POS pool cars!!
So whats worse, getting tazed or shot with a duty weapon?
Hey be careful out there.

I don't see how this is any improvement at all, and I'm not even the police. This is just another bump that creates a gray area in the force continuum, with possible disastrous consequences for the officer.
I heard on the radio that Weis was touting the effectiveness of these, and that they offer another alternative before the use of deadly force. What he neglected to mention is this already exists - the threat of using a firearm is far more intimidating than some electric toy that has a chance of failing. These goddamn things are going to get people killed..officers and offenders alike.
If these things cost roughly $1000, and they are going to buy a few hundred of them..where's all that money coming from?!
Just took the taser course last week, it was cool but what kinda blows is that we have to qualify every year when we qualify with our guns!!!
Can I have teh Cavaiani-Taser model?
If you haven't learned yet...taser is great for non lethal, except when it kills aqnd then the officer with his "8?" hours of training is at fault in civil lawsuit as the taser company per last years court ruling is off the hook for damages unless malfunction occurs, unfortunately that has never been the case. No white shirt is going to help you in any instance...and smart sergeants carry as mandated but aren't using them. Be aware, don't set yourself up
Guys, Com'on this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Think of it; Car wont start - taz it, You'd never be stuck in the middle of nowhere looking for a jump again. I really think we could take this farther.....computer wont work - taz it, radio wont work - taz it. big head approaches your car in 09 while you wait for your partner at Stages, TAZEM!
The plaintiffs' lawyers are rejoicing!
I thought John Burge was gone?
God Bless John Burge.
Pookie hates da Taser. Very useful tool.
Um, who has the contract and how much is this going to cost. And OT, are there in-car cameras that record your 8 hour tour? I'm a det and don't think that has hit our squads yet.
Taser actually cuts down on lawsuits, it's funny listening to the pussy poser police in my district walk around talking about how they aren't taking out a taser cuz they dont want to be sued lool they forget about all the other shit on their belt that'll get them sued much faster, as well as that pen in their pocket that allows them to write shitty paper, which gets them sues more than anything else....
taser kills
Screw that taser. They aren't worth all the trouble they cause. A good old night stick and your weapon is just fine. Lets get back to the basics and everything else will fall in place!
Yeah, just like everyone is supposed to get a Tahoe.
I'm sure CPD bought "dual purpose" tasers - 25% of the available charge goes to the taser part, 75% goes to jumping your dead squad......
Can you name the retired hack superintendent contracted to provide training to the CPD masses??
Great - Let's remember that a Taser is a "Less Lethal" option and should never be deployed in a situation that might require a "Lethal Force" response without another officer on scene to provide such response, if required.
The City does not pay you to be a Victim.
what squad cars? There's hardly any driveable.
.....More lawsuits. And don't think for a moment that lawsuits aren't going to happen. Wait for someone to get tasered in the hot summer in front of a crowd. The summer heat will bring out the reverands and media, of how an injustice was done on the poor misunderstood " altar boy ". Especially now after reports coming in that heart attacks are occuring after some people get tasered. All and all, we got to have laws on the books to give maximum sentences here in Cook County to have any kind of drastic effect on crime. You know it. I know it.
This is the Depts way of saying we are all on our own this summer. There will be no backup coming. I have feeling redistricting is on the way,and manpower will be shifted to busier places. The dismantling of units is the first step. The Dept has no plan in place to deal with major incidents, and this step is them finally admitting this. Unless you've learned to be the "Real Police" you are in big trouble.
I went to the taser training class and it was pretty cool. But let's get real the tasers are a good tool but they need to be maintained. The batteries have a shelf life and once they expire they need to be sent back to be recharged. Now we all know how this dept. works the city will outsource to some company in Texas to have the batteries recharged and we won't see them for a month or two. They are also supposed to be tested once a day and it is the responsibility of 1st watch to do this. Every time they are tested a form has to be filled out. So every night some shlep who works the radio room has to do this? I foresee a lot of AD's and people fucking themselves up even though only trained officers are to handle them. Shitty computers, shitty cars, shitty bosses and after a month on the street shitty tasers. Soo sad but true.
"And if your "non-compliant subject" isn't very understanding after that, another round to the head usually cures any animosity towards the police.

ENJOY YOUR LAWSUIT PISTOLERO, WRITE THEM A PERSONAL CHECK TO COVER THE DAMAGES,GOOF
Can you use the taser if your car needs a jump?
Sounds to me like the city has decided that cops are expendable, given that they must initially trust their lives to a device which can be defeated by a friggin' sportcoat!
I STILL PREFER VERBAL JUDO ,ITS VERY CAPS LIKE AND I'M TRAINED TO USE IT. SIGNED , BRUCE LEE
Keep the damn Tasers, I don't want one and I guarantee I will be the last trained and they will have to order me to carry one.
I will thereafter call it my jody gun.
Little Weasel J'Fed, Fuck the Tasers and give these guys and girls cars and PDTS. Then the Tasers should come, SHAME SHAME on this Asswipes who run FOP and PBPA, You clowns need to return to the circus, Did you forget you ARE the police too, You guys are all getting FAT off our union dues, just sit back and relax, get fatter and laugh at the working police.
Won't work well with saggy Englewood pants.
I need to gain 20 lbs so I can have enough room on my duty belt to carry all these additional defense weapons.
Refuse to go on any job 99. Your playing right into the city's plan to make everyone 99. Don't risk your saftey or anyone else. Go 10-4 to every call. If no one is available wait. BOBO will not be calling 911 for you.....
“They’re going to train the officers to shoot at the back and at the legs because the back is the biggest muscle. [But,] when people are confronting officers, usually it’s face-forward,” she said.
“I’m just concerned that we make sure we train them properly and don’t have any unnecessary deaths because people are hitting these folks right in the chest plate. It’s a split-second decision. They don’t have time to find out if the person has a heart condition. I don’t want us to start seeing a lot of lawsuits we end up paying because we’re Tasering people improperly.”
--What does SHE know. Perfect case scenario is the backside, but we all know they will twist, turn, duck etc. Or should we say... Oh offender, please turn around so I can shoot the darts in your back because we don't want you to file a lawsuit. Another politician who thinks they are an expert on police training. Worried about lawsuits? Shit, they'll just raise our taxes to cover them.
Well, unlike the last 39 comments, I am happy and grateful I will be allowed to carry a Taser soon. Thank you to the Gods of the "No Clout P.O"

bring back the kel light

Tasers are useful under the right conditions and circumstances.
First this department needs a "Failure To Comply" (FTC) understanding for use of the Taser. Check Florida law it works!
Responding officers cannot use or rely on the taser as a last result or resource for defense.
This is not what this tool was designed for or should be used for.
It's a simple program. Follow this;
Officer arrives at a physicsal disturbance. Officer announces their office and orders the two combatants to cease and decist their actions. One combatant compplies and the other continues the onslaught. Officer is not getting between the two before knowing who is who, how and or why why it started. Officer again demands the continuing offender to cease. Offender refuses by continuous action and or by verbal refusal: FTC established Officer tases Offender while keeping a visual on other combatant.
1 Officer stopped the altercaqtion.
2 Officer made two orders to cease and decist.
3 Officer not physically injured from either or both combatants
4 First of the two combatants who complied, was saved from additional and or continued injury.
5 Second of the two combatants is physically controlled until additional responding units arrive.
Failure To Comply should be the basis to tase.
DO NOT SUBSTITUTE THE TASER FOR YOUR SIDEARM!!!!!!
Do you need to pass the P.O.W.E.R. test to sign out a taser?
Whooooooooooooooo!
Rick Flair says Whooooooo Yes You Dooooooooooooooooooo.
No suprise that he says the tasers are BS when holding court and bragging how only certain officers need one. But in front of JW he supports the taser plan infatically.
What a JOKE! These guys can't keep loyal to anyone or anything. What does it feel like to stare at a pumpkin head in the mirror.
Hey you like apples?
How about those apples!
AMEN Westside to putting a coupe rounds into an assailant instead of tazing them....just wait til some hard-on gelhead tries to squash an englewood domestic and the 10 family members take the tazer from the 3 yr wonder and incapacitate him or her with it. ive been involved in three shootings, 2 of them fatals in my 23 years, i wont carry a tazer. If you cant handle yourself with your muscle, partner, club and firearm, you shouldnt be on this job. as stated before, po's are going to be opening themselfs up to big problems with tazers/lawsuits. any knee jerk reaction by the dept with rushed-thru training means problems, trust me. and yes, this is the dept's way of saying get ready to be working 99 alot more often.

C'mon now, Really?
This (if you haven't figured it out), is just another tool to keep us safe.
I much rather tase someone as opposed to risking going IOD, or my partner getting hurt. I'm 99% sure most police know when to take out the taser and when the gun.
You're leading to the pussification of our department. Lawsuits? No, it's called going home safely.

Brother I agree with you 100%. In my district on first watch we have about two thirds of our watch as 99 units. Fucking bullshit. The city doesn't give a fuck about our safety or the safety of the citizens of Chicago. How can I be proactive if I don't have a partner? If backup is not sufficient?
Taze or bullet? That is the question. So when you decide to throw a few rounds in the felon, family is going to boohoo with crocodile tears and a big fat lawsuit as to why we didn't taze the bro instead.
The only good thing about this is that whoever has the contract on this is getting rich.
In the heated confrontation with the non-compliant offender:
"Sir, please turn your back on me so that I can taze you."

Why don't we all just carry a revolver, handcuffs, and a nightstick? No vest either, it's not worth the trouble. No seat belts, computers, OC spray. Go back to carbon paper and typewriters for everything. Go back to call boxes, who needs a radio? When they want to give me a job, they can just call the tavern, where me and my partner are getting drunk while on duty. They should also ditch the hiring process and testing...go back to the old days where you paid the alderman for your job. It was nice because if you paid extra, you could skip the academy. All we need to do is go back to basics because in the old days, everything was perfect.

Too bad gelheads dont morph into KMAs with revolvers as they age...We need real Police in this town.
Hmmm...
Soooo...
We imagine trying to squash a dynamic and highly mobile Harrison, Englewood or Gresham domestic in which the trap doors, moving walls and hidey-holes in the basement divulge their secreted occupants upon the Police tazing one of their litter-mates?
One more silly thing that Officers have to keep track of?
Broken or pilfered, the Officer has to "eat it" i.e. suspension time and replacement cost even if there is no finding of fault or negligence on the Officer's part?
And of course we all know it never goes like it did during training... Dynamic movement attempts to evade/block and so on...
We don't argue that the Taser is effective in some instances but the powers that be are pushing real hard and fast for this to get in front of the Summer Madness in which quite possibly EVERYONE on EVERY WATCH in Patrol will probably end up working 99...
shorty & weis-hole are all but telling you they don't give a shit whether you return to your families in one piece or not. They'll just hand out Tasers and when something goes wrong and a P.O. is hurt or worse, they'll say "We gave them every tool available" and feel good about it instead of manning up and admitting they've intentionally starved this Department of equipment, man-power and training for years.
Go sell crazy somewhere else, we're already over stocked here...
Get a strap/lanyard for your baton so you don't lose it during vigorous application!
We would be well served if we could carry the London Metropolitan Truncheon (Bobby club) or the ultimate impact tool, the Sjambok.
Just remember not to unnecessarily endanger yourselves trying to put the Taser in play... If you gotta kill a house full of muthafuckahs to go home safe then do it.
Stay Safe All... The Mean Season is upon us.

I know your being a smart a$$ but things got done in the old days. Not like now. The more shit you carry on your belt the less you have upstairs.
Is it okay to tase stupid bosses? Maybe I'll just tase myself to take the edge off.:)
Anyone out there pro Taser should be Tazed! Let's run down this departments logic.
FIRST: After receiving many lawsuits because of the use of a very effective tool; the 5 cell Kel light ( impact weapon & flashlight in one ) the department prohibited it's use, only to be later replaced by a telescoping metal rod, the ASP. BRILLIANT!
SECOND: Replacing Revolvers with Semi-auto pistols. Great idea except Double Action Only semi's are effectively... Revolvers with smaller, less effective caliber. BRILLIANT!
Third: Replacing squad cars with traction control, more maneuverability and overall safety with 2 Wheel Drive Tahoes that you can't see out of, can't go down that alley, squeeze past the double parked car. etc.etc.etc. BRILLIANT!
I propose this: Single Action .45's a nice Benelli shotgun instead of Tasers in every car. All units ride 10-4! BRILLIANT!
And here's my quote for J-fed and Shortshanks to ponder: "It is weakness rather than wickedness which renders men unfit to be trusted with unlimited power." -- John Adams, 1788

RIGHT!!! What does he win Johnny!!
I know your being a smart a$$ but things got done in the old days. Not like now. The more shit you carry on your belt the less you have upstairs.
Things got done in the old days because you were allowed to be the police, EVERYONE had our backs, there were no cameras and no bookworms on this job......
Hillard is the national spokesperson for Taser, 5 million contract. He also just got the contract to clean up McPier and suggest changes. Pays to be connected. Don't forget, he would not let the Personnel Division certify retired officers so they could get retired concealed carry and refused to let us use the ranges, even at our own expense. It took a change in state law sponsered by Milner, a retired Elmherst chief to help us the the pension board to certify us a retired. I have no respect for Hilliard.A hypocrite
SFPD copper here. . . our police commission just shot down our attempt to get Tasers. I've seen the Tasers used by our sheriff's deputies and they work. My brother is a cop in a smaller agency and they have them as well. If we don't get them, oh well. We tried. The next time we have a dusted maniac fighting us, going for our weapon, then it's lights out. And the police commission will have no one to blame but themselves.
Things got done in the old days because you were allowed to be the police, EVERYONE had our backs, there were no cameras and no bookworms on this job......

TRUE because the City didnt PUSSY out and pay off every whiny MOPE that got a tune up that sorely deserved it. But hey think of it this way there has to be a market for all those "college educated" "law enforcement professionals"
You knew this was headed South Fast when the word "patrolman" was removed from The Badge and replaced with Whats there now. Ya know gotta keep up with those sensitivity issues. Id BET half the "new breed" of "police" would shit their shorts and run the other way at some of the shit we faced "back in the day" Oh wait......they would analyze and observe then if the wind was right(so not to mess up the hair gel) they MIGHT dive in. Its to the point where one is SCARED to do or say anything for fear of what THEY have let this department become. One wish before they plant me. Bring the BALLS back to the CPD. UNLEASH those heavy pipehittin MF'ers that could stop damn near ANY disturbance. There's a few left just patiently waiting for the day we can walk in toss it on the desk grab a handful of Crotch and smile and say
KISS MY ASS IM OUTTA HERE.
There are a FEW of the "kids" out here that 'have the fire' Ive seen in in 018,024,003,and believe it or not 017 and 020. I wish you well and hope you carry on for us "old dogs" and "dinosaurs" that will be soon leaving you.
One final note:
There was a time when by merely STANDING there at a job a fellow was on he KNEW his back was covered. It was "that look" or "that nod" that let him/her know he/she was ok and was PROTECTED. Now sadly you have to wonder if the person showing up HAS your back or is about to KNIFE YOUR BACK. THAT is Truly the demise of the Chicago Police Department.
Weis I hope you read this as maybe THIS may CLUE YOU THE FUCK IN as to whats MISSING in This Department. You wont be able to instill that because you yourself lack that HONORABLE ADMIRABLE TRAIT.When you can PROVE that a working cop wont get jammed up if he/she actually does POLICE work as opposed to this warm fuzzy touchy feely sensitive BULLSHIT you try to pass off as police work THEN and ONLY THEN will you have made a step somewhere NEAR the right direction.
Blue.....to the very LAST DAY.
