Is Dart Running for Office?

  • Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced this morning he has closed a 600-bed dorm at Cook County Jail and is planning to close another 300-bed facility in the next few weeks in a measure that could potentially save taxpayers $15 million a year.

  • The closures will allow the shifting of 175 corrections employees to other posts — a move Dart says will save $10.5 million in annual salaries and potentially $2 million more a year in overtime costs.

No word on what's behind the reduction in inmate population though.

Honestly I'm tired of hearing about Carlos Velez being promoted. Nobody and I mean nobody is deserving of that many merit promotions. He hit every single one of them. Det, Sgt. Lt and now Commander after only 10 months. I'm sure he did a lot in these last 10 months. Good guy or not he represents everything wrong with this dept. How do you look people in the eye? Fuck these people!!

3/05/2010 12:09:00 AM

Agreed 100%! Before the end of the year, I would bet my pension that every single exempt on this Department was POLITICALLY merit promoted at least twice! Complete morale killer.

The only thing worse than hearing "Commander Carlos Velez" will be the day they announce "Commander Barbara West".

I know what it is: it's the small amounts offenders' release program. They announced it maybe a month ago: you got less than one gram, rather than having the judge say "no probable cause" in order to control the docket, they let you go and say "keep your nose clean for a year, and we'll drop the charge".

This could free up huge resources.

I'm an"Old jail guard" that worked in County 12 years ago when you couldn't swing a monkey without hitting somebody. 3 to a cell everyday and bus loads daily coming in "on the new." It must be all the reformed criminals....better yet how about the judges and CCSA office freeing these scumbags to walk the streets. Since Dart said there are less criminals due to lower crime rates we at CPD must be doing a great job and therefore deserve a raise...How about realizing that less people are being housed in County because Quinn, Daley & Alvarez don't give a sh*t!!!

Tom Dart is a good guy and would make a great Mayor. He acknowledges his weaknesses and has surrounded himself with very smart people. He doesn't dress up in his uniform and respects his people. He goes out of his way to actually try and make the job better for the Sheriffs. Our pool of candidates to succed Daley is very shallow and full of sharks,so people better start educating themselves about "their guy".

No. He will call things like he see's it, but I'm sure you will get 100 people here say that he is a 'puppet' or something like that. He would be way better than Daley. We need to realize that the exact guy we want to be mayor, probably doesn't have a chance. Dart might have one.

Hey Cook County Judicial system run by ballesss hack pussies why not use these 600 beds and the future 300 to actually start sentencing and punishing those committing misdemeanor crimes and violating probation, supervision and conditional discharge? Imagine someone actually taking a 60 day hit for say battery instead of the supervision that will be violated time and time again with no ramifications. I know you only sentence mandatory minimums if mandated by statute because you hate to lose a vote.

It started in 2005 when SOS got handcuffed. It just took almost 5 yrs to sift through the case loads. And, inmates serving their terms on their cases. It was a done deal when J-fed & mini-masters stepped in and took the reigns. Now we'll just have to sit back and wait for the tide to ease up and show the rest of the world what kind of shithole this city and county really are.
Try getting a case good enough for a true bill in a grand jury and the ASA tells you that they have orders from high up NOT to send case or at least try to avoid sending cases to a G/J. What a joke...

Dont be fooled by DARTS Bullshit!

The Cook County Board passed this a long time ago to same money. TOM DART did not have anything to do with this decision. He takes advantage of people and things to receive credit.

Dart has NEVER been a Police Officer nor has he ever did anything that has been useful to taxpayers except smile in cameras and save CATS from buildingsw.

While violence has erupted again in Chicago, TOM DART focuses on Prostitutes on internet CRAIGSLIST??????? WHAT!!???

TOM DART also dug up graves like HE OR HIS OFFICE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT! THE FBI TOOK THAT CASE OVER AND TOLD DART TO LEAVE!!HE DIDNT. HE DUG UP GRAVES WITH HIS SHERIFFSA FOR PUBLICITY REASONS ONLY!!!

ASK YORSELF: What does the sheriff in Cook County have to do with cemeteries in Alsip?? Police Chief in Alsip told me he did want DART there or even asked for his help.

HE SAID DART only cares about himself and this is why he is a media hound like a PUPPY! And we are tired of it.

This covers up TOM DARTS inability to govern anything.

NEVER HAS BEEN THE POLICE!

NEVER HAS BEEN AN EXECUTIVE OVER NOTHING!

ALWAYS PUTS HIS FACE ON SAVING LITTLE KITTY KATS BECAUSE ITS POPULAR

NEVER HAS TRIED TO REDUCE CRIME ON THE STREETS OF COOK COUNTY

SPENDS MILLIONS OF TAXPAYERS MONEY: INCLUDING THE TAX INCREASE; AND NEVER SAYS WHAT HE DID WITH THE MONEY!

DONT BE FOOLED BY SHERIFF THOMAS DART AND HIS INCOMPETENT CHIEF OF STAFF

THEY ARE ROBBING YOU BLIND!

Its hard to bring in felony arrest when Anita Alvarez's office denies 90% of the cases. The only felony cases that are increasing are dope and DUI, but most of those cases get either an I-bond or a low enough bond that they pay it or get I-bonded by the Sheriff at 26th. Chargeable part 1 and 2 cases have got to be down by 80-90%! All because Anita wants to present a 100% conviction rate on the 10-15% of cases that actually get charged. It is total political bullshit...
