Expensive 911 Calls
This would be one way to cut down on all the nonsense calls we end up answering:
- Tracy [California] residents will now have to pay every time they call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency.
But there are a couple of options. Residents can pay a $48 voluntary fee for the year which allows them to call 9-1-1 as many times as necessary.
Or, there's the option of not signing up for the annual fee. Instead, they will be charged $300 if they make a call for help.
People would learn to solve a lot of their own problems rather than pay $300 to have us tell them that we can't make junior eat his veggies, that it's their responsibility to take Sally to school and if they don't want to be in love anymore, then someone better find a new place to live.
But for some reason, having 10 or more calls after the dope dealer gets shot on the tip making the city $3,000 brings a smile to our faces.

SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA FOR CHICAGO!WE SHOULD ALSO RE ROUTE NON EMERGENCY CALLS TO 311..LIKE CDP ,BATTERY JOBS WHERE NO OFFENDER ON SCENE!IF VICTIM INJURED CFD CAN B DISPATCHED!THI=OUSANDS OF CALL FOR SERVICE SAVED!!
I wonder if they have found ways to stop people from getting around the system. Like dialing "O" Operator or calling the Police Station ?
slightly off topic--- the blackhawks beat up on the oilers tonite 5-2 at the uc after getting thumped by the islanders tuesday night.... the hawks packaged up versteeg and huet in a bid to get volkoun but the deal fell thru... quenny will now have to make a choice between huet or niemi--- it's tough for goalies to share the cage, it's also hard to sit a goalie who you're paying 6 million dollars a year for....
Yeah, but you know those fees will be waived in certain neighborhoods, just like me having to pay 50% to replace the CITY sidewalk in front of my home, but no such payment required in the "inner city".
It'll be another moneymaker for shortshanks because we already have a 9-1-1 tax ($2.50/month) on all city phone numbers, as well as a "Municipal Communications Tax"
($1.72/month).
If/when these geniuses suggest this idea, STRONGLY inform them that your answer is NO.
rb
So if you witness a crime such as a csa or robbery, it will cost you $300 to call the police?
Who u kidding scc. those people arent going to pay anyway.
its only going to affect the responsible people that pay bills.
So what happens when people see an accident or person doing something shady? They don't call 911 because they don't wanna get billed. Seems dumb and puts innocient people that need help in danger
SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA FOR CHICAGO!WE SHOULD ALSO RE ROUTE NON EMERGENCY CALLS TO 311
WHAT! And make them work down there???
....or calling the Police Station ?
Here's a suggestion that might help....tell those rocket scientists who work the desk to stop dispatching.
Too many times I have been given jobs that involved a citizen calling the station about parking complaints, noise complaints, etc. A kid riding his bike in the street suddenly becomes a check the well being.
Amazingly, when I talk to these people, most of them tell me that they called 311 (knowing it was not an emergency) and their call was routed to the local station.
There are a number of officers who work the desk on my watch who will take a call and then send it to the dispatcher via the computer. The only problem with that is there have been way too many times when a desk officer, trying to generate an RD, mistakenly sends it as a pending job to the zone. So now the dispatcher has to verify that it is indeed a pending job or a mistake. It ties up the air with bullshit. Then if you are lucky enough to catch this gem, you get to listen to the caller bitch as to why it took so long to answer their call.
could only cause more lawsuits
Sounds good..
The only ones who will pay are the ones actually earning their money. They won't get a cent out of the tax eaters who are the ones always calling the police to settle every little problem.
I wonder what will happen when the first Battery In Progress victim dies because witnesses and bystanders refused to call 911 to avoid the $300 charge?
Politicians can pass any law they like. But when the Courts strike it down or find it unconstitutional, WHO pays the settlement on the lawsuits? Certainly not the politicians!
ALL of the pols in this country should be held personally liable for all of the STUPID legislation passed by STUPID elected officials.
I'm surprised some lawyer hasn't come up with a class action suit against the City for all of the victims of violence based on the victims inability to protect themselves due to Chicago's handgun ban... Especially during the time period since the DC ban was struck down. Instead of following the Courts' precedent, Daley's continued refusal to accept defeat may have cost hundreds of Chicagoans their lives by continuing to disallow them to arm and protect themselves.
We are living in Daley's Bizarro World where the gun ban in 1982 stemmed from the efforts of a made member of the Chicago Outfit, (Alderman Fred Roti), and continues to this day under the Daley/Burke Crime Family!
Unfortunately Lunacy, not Justice is the law of the Land of Lincoln!
Al Capone would be proud!
The taxpayer will get nailed with this one. All lot of people who call 911 are from cell phones. A lot of people on public assistance call for just about anything..... Cut my finger, stomach hurt," don't feel good for three weeks now, etc. Case in point. The people who abuse the system never pay anything. No hospital no ambulance no co pays. Can you see the pattern here. Don't charge $300. Start charging them co-pays. If they have money to be on a cell phone they must obviously have some extra cash. We need to stop rewarding lazy people. Stop fucking with the taxpayer!!!!
Not only will the worst "offenders" not pay, this will massivly cut down on legit 911 calls for service.
Less calls for service = less need for police.
Good luck collecting.
This is just a tax by another name. Sounds like a good idea on the surface but the ghetto mutts don't even pay their gas bills...are they really going to pay $300? And with what? LINK money? That's our money anyway.
Meanwhile if I see some asshole breaking into my neighbor's garage, I'm not going to call because I don't want to be billed $300.
I'd be more in favor of charging for bogus calls. Cops show up on scene, junior won't eat his cereal, issue a $100 ticket for wasting the police's time. Good citizens will have nothing to fear from this.
I have no idea how you'd enforce it on the non-working do-nothing lazy-asses, though.
I already pay hefty property taxes to cover police service and taxes on my phone bill to cover the 911 system. I would rather see a better call taking system that weeds out BS calls of service and a revamped system of what calls the police should respond to.
The downside to this "user fee" is that there is no incentive to keep crime out of your neighborhood. Would you call 911 and be charged $300 if you saw your neighbor being burglarized? It's his home and property, he's insured, and I get a fat bill?? No thanks, I will wait for the detective, polide officer to canvas the area and give my accurate description then. Sorry, I can't afford $300 to save your stuff.
And don't think this is how your neighbors will think when it's you house being broken into.
I haven't called it in my adult life. I wouldn't pay for it. I would take the odd chance that I won't need it. Break even point is is roughly 6 years. I'll take that chance. I'm not paying for shit that I ain't using!
I f*ckin love this idea!
If we show up and determine it's not an absolute emergency... bam! pay the $300.
That would stop the dog barking calls, the out of control 8 year old kid that won't eat his dinner, etc..
I'm so sick of having to play parent and disciplinarian for these parents that can't be bothered with it. That's not our job.
My oh my! What are those baby mamma's going to do when they have to call 911 on the baby daddy????
311 should be able to handle non-emergencies. I used to have neighbors who would keep the entire neighborhood up at night. Tensions were rising and violence was coming. Time for some professional intervention. I called 311. They said that if we wanted police to respond it had to be 911. That was silly. This was not an emergency. It was a quality-of-life issue for the beat cops to handle when they got a chance.
I AM PAYING $2.50 FOR HOUSE PHONE AND $2.50 FOR CELL A MONTH TO CALL 911. THAT IS SIXTY DOLLARS A YEAR STOLEN FROM ME. VOTE ALL INCUMBENTS OUT!
Read the article again. It says for medical emergencies they will be charged.
This is a really dumb idea....just call the regular line...."Yeah, Police? I just shot a guy breaking into my house, drop by when you've got a moment"....LOL.
Say what you want, but this is a really bad idea. Taxes are supposed to pay for emergency services.
I wonder if they have found ways to stop people from getting around the system. Like dialing "O" Operator or calling the Police Station ?

Having lived in Rogers Park for 20 years, I can tell you that the local district won't take phone calls any more.
When I dialed '311' for non-emergency, the operator would tell me to call '911' if I wanted an officer to respond.
Living at Chase & Ashland, we called the police frequently.
2:20am couldn't agree with you more---the responsible people will hesitate to call police, wondering if it would be considered an emergency. Suspicious person calls would never occur and therefore crime will run rampant
The charge should be for bogus calls. Nonemergency bullshit. Have consequenses for acts of ignorance. I know it would be next to impossible to collect from the less priviliged but they sure waste a lot of time, money and resourses with their bullshit calls for service.
Thats a great idea until you need to call 911. What else is for sale?
Sounds like yet another way of fleecing the general public - namely the middle class.
Total Bull Shit. Won't raise a dime. Because the people that call the po-po for every mo-fo'n thang ain't gonna pay for the call because Jukie won't turn down his boom-box. They don't pay for nothing now, so what is going to change.
Now the poor sap in the expensive area that sees a suspicious auto,(maybe a bunch or robbers) calls 911 and when the police car FINALLY arrives the SH-s have gone will get tagged with a $300 bill.
Tho there should be a charge. Maybe the bambulance won't get called out for headaches or "Momma can't shit" calls. Even if they charged only $20-$25, it would cut the nonsense down.
And you pay BEFORE the ride....never get the money afterwards.
The last time I called for an ambulance, the city banged me for $400.00!! WTF was that about?? It was legit! What was I suppose to do, drive my wife to the hospital after I had heart surgery!?? Kno' what...I was stupid, I started to pay a little at a time, because of it was a hardship and then after the first month, the f---ing city gave it to a collection agent!! Next time I have to call for either medical or police, I'll take care of it myself!! Then I'll find that lawyer and sue the f--- out them!! Wish me luck!!
