It was clear that the male host was trying to get Northen to lose his cool. Rodriguez, Hillard and Cline were never accused of being cowards. You can't have a coward for a leader and expect people to take him seriously. The coward has disgraced the CPD in the worst possible way. He should be fired immediately. If the killer got away, what was the idiot host raving that 3 units were enough. If enough units responded including J-Fled, the more likely the offender would have been caught. Northen is really sharp. He blew both J-Fled and the biased host out of the water. Amy Jacobson was totally fair.

What could have driven the point further home is that the "I gotta run" establishes a pattern of lack of leadership skill, the FOP no confidence vote and the Cozzi incident.

I like how the host thinks that because 3 squads responded that everything was all good. For all we know, there could have been a shoot out or a foot chase ready to happen.
We just never know and THAT is why j-fled should have responded.
(and if he didn't want to "grandstand", he still could have toured the area or stayed close in case the officers needed some help. Going in the opposite direction was wrong)
J-Fled should have run to the area of the shooting no matter how many squads may have been on the scene.
While things were in progress, J-Fled could not have known there were three squads on the scene.
It could have been the case that one or more of three cars responding were down BECAUSE of the shot/s fired! Thank g-d that was not the case.
I don't see it matters how many cars responded in light of putting as much overwhelming force in the area as fast as possible.
While it may be the case, had J-Fled run to the scene, some would accuse J-Fled of grandstanding, However, I believe, many cops would admit, perhaps grudgingly, it was the right thing for J-Fled to do and even if that was not the case, getting to the scene was the right thing for J-Fled to do. It's not a popularity contest.

John Howard was not prepared for this interview. 3 cars to respond could have meant 3 one officer cars. That is too small of a response to a bonifide shooting. If jfed responded right away he might have been the third car on the scene. We are so short of sgts and maybe he could have helped. Instead he ran to 35th street. Why didn't his "handlers" tell him or advise how important his presence would have been. He is clueless.

Police Officers are trained to respond to calls and protect each other as did the Sgt last month with his loss of life. J-Fed only wishes to protect number # 1 "himself"instead of being a leader and taking control of a situation as a boss with any police instinct just does. I listened and was proud of Northside. The only problem with Northsides presentation is a lack of being concise. when Howell said three squads were there, Northside shoud.ve said "Until there is a DISREGARD ALL availible units are REQUIRED to respond to in progress call.
He should've also stated that all on duty sworn members are required to have thier "gear" on thier person.
That said I am typing this while drinking my coffee having never been interviewed by the media. I am not criticizing I am sharing talking points for the next interview

What the co-host of the show doesn’t get are the intricate details of being a real police officer. It would be like me calling the show and telling them how to run a radio show which I don’t have a clue how to do. This is the only job that I know of that decisions are armchair quarterbacked by everyone that couldn’t tell a gang banger from a gang bang happening in their bedroom.
Any police officer worth any self respect or with even the slightest bit of work ethic would have at least driven towards the area in the event a flash message was put out over the air or float around the area if there was a car hauling ass away from the crime scene.
It doesn’t matter if three or fifty three cars were already there, if he actually gave two shits about this job, the responding police officers, or the homicides occurring in this city, he would have been there. He wasn’t there, so now we know.
Could you imagine if there was a pod camera recording a lowly PO not responding to a homicide 3 blocks away?? They would be crucified by the media and the rent a reverends.
It wasn't great. Northen is right, but he needs to stick to one or two rational talking points for an interview like that. Cops run to shots fired calls. That is what you do. He didn't do it. The rank and file don't respect him. He's not a cop and he can't even act like one when it matters.
Getting off point by talking about how he is a whistleblower and Robert Wright and his phone call while Jody was SAC-PH, who gives a shit?!? I know its all part of the larger argument and context, but there is no way to really express this in this kind of interview, where the hosts clearly oppose the interviewee.

When you consider the circumstances that our officers have been confronted with most recently in Englewood, there is no justification for Jody not responding to that scene immediately. For cripes sake, he was being interviewed about the current level of violence in the very neighhborhood in which he was standing. if just one CPD or CFD member would step up and run against Daley a lot of problems could be potentially resolved. I'm new to the job - 2 years now - and frankly, I think it's fair to say that the entire time I've been on the job the department morale has been getting worse and worse. I love what I do and would love nothing more than to feel that my Superintendent is the boss for a reason. This department could turn around if we had someone who would step up and act like a boss - and not like a spokesperson.
Weis came and spoke to us while we were in the academy. he said, "Ask me anything...." He was actually asked some meaningful questions. He sidestepped and avoided giving a straight answer to all of them. He has zero respect from anyone here on this job. The best thing that could possibly happen is if he were to step down. Goodbye and good riddance.

I'm going to tell you an incident that happened to me. I was OFF DUTY NO GUN, NO VEST when I heard loud reports on my block. Like any GOOD policeman I went to the location of the reports to find an M/4 shot. I called in the person shot. I gathered info. on the shooter and whereabouts of the offender to both OEMC and to responding officers. A unit heard the call and possible location of the offender. They saw the offender snatched him up and taken to the scene where he was positively identified as the shooter all within 15 mins of the incident. The victim ultimately died from his injuries. All done with out a VEST OR GUN! WEIS (I gather)didn't have either. But he also lacked one important thing. It takes HEART to be a policeman. He WILL NEVER attain that HEART no matter how many times he puts OUR beloved uniform on!

I gotta dissent here. Big John Howell did sound like he was on the 'rag' for that interview, but he is usually pro-POlice. Northen sounded like an annoying-ass whiner. Repeated the crime/victim/crimescene address repeatedly. Is that all he got?
J-Fed SHOULD HAVE responded, but I can see how a civilian like Howell doesn't get it. He aint' the po-po.
Northen doesn't speak for me. . . I never saw him work the 'Wood and to tell the truth, he didn't sound like he had a braincell in him during that interview.
Lastly, you won't catch me whining about how persecuted I am once I'm gone from this job. . . nor Surfing the blog when I have 10 years of retirement in.

I listened and was proud of Northside. The only problem with Northsides presentation is a lack of being concise. when Howell said three squads were there, Northside shoud.ve said "Until there is a DISREGARD ALL availible units are REQUIRED to respond to in progress call.
He should've also stated that all on duty sworn members are required to have thier "gear" on thier person.
That said I am typing this while drinking my coffee having never been interviewed by the media. I am not criticizing I am sharing talking points for the next interview

That is an excellent point. Officers are required and trained to respond until a slow down or disregard is given. Jfed handlers should have monitored the radio and advised him on proper protocol. But he seems to be surrounded by civilian handlers. It could have been 3 one man cars responding to a bonified shooting. That should have been explained to Big John. Otherwise Northern did an excellent job and made us proud.
How about that debate between J-Fled and Northside?
$50 a ticket at the United Center with all proceeds going to the widows and children of murdered police officers.

Bottom line is: the superintendent should have responded to the shots fired, he was in the immediate area. He could have deferred the entire situation to the officer in charge there, but he should have at least responded as the leader of the CPD to get an assessment of the situation.
From what I read on his blog, his "handlers" have been reassigned to street duty, is this true? Is it because of that poor decision, or are they being "set-up for street time" in anticipation of a "merit promotion?" Didn't his last driver make merit sgt?
I think Weis and his handlers have to decide what type of Supt. he wants to be once and for all - if he wants to be strictly an administrator, then fine, stay at HQ and hand down directives. However, sice he dons that uniform all the time, then he needs to act and respond accordingly. You cannot wear the uniform and act like a Chicago policeman, and go half way once out in the field. What I saw was a a man being treated (and acting) like the President of the U.S. or some other big wig diplomat...a handler whispers in his ear that trouble is close, then they shove in a car and get him out of harms way....that's fine if you are the president....but if you're going to choose wear the uniform, act accordingly.
To Sgt. Northen (not NORTHERN) a big thank you for attempting to do the things we would like to do but can't because of possible repercussions. To those retards who are criticizing what you did or what you should have said, I ask Why the fuck don't you brave souls step forward and give an interview and state your feelings toward this job or the supt? Thats right you don't have the balls like Northen to do so. Thanks again John!
I was out of state this last weekend and got to talk to some other POs from other states. It's amazing the bad press CPD got from this in other parts of the country, even small local stations showing unedited film about J-Fed fleeing the scene!
As usual, the mayor has made us a laughing stock for decent people.

I don't like John Howell, but Mr. Northern is not making his case very effectively. There must be something I'm missing.
J. Thomas Hunter, the whole case is that police have only each other to rely on for our safety. When there is a person shot call and it is bonafide, you do not know if the shooter is still there or they may be in the area. Every police officer from the lowest to the highest ranking responds to these calls if they are in the area. In this case the shooter could have been confronted by the first responding officer or officers and shot them. That is why we keep on going until someone gives a disregard for any more units. Then many cops will still go or at least stay in the immediate area in case a description of the offender is given and he crosses your path. I had that happen to me when I was in Englewood. It was a call of a robbery. I saw the offender 3 blocks away while in the area. As I chased the offender the guy pulled out a .44 caliber revolver and pointed it at me. Thankfully there were 4 or 5 cars pulling up from every direction and he made the decision, luckily for me, to drop the gun and run. He was caught, but the morale is, there are never enough cops at a scene when all hell breaks loose. I have been backed up by lieutenants, Inspectors, commanders and been on scenes when a Deputy Superintendent showed up with the first cars. The point is our so called Superintendent went the other way and didn't even attempt to go to the scene. No other Superintendent who came up through the ranks would have left without going to the scene and not the other way. Every sworn member of our department is a police officer first. That is not the case of the current one. He wears our uniform, wants our respect, states he has our back, but in one single instance showed he is not a police officer. Because he did not respond, he showed he is not a police officer and doesn't understand our job, duties or our understanding that we are all one. Our survival is dependent on the fact that we are there for each other. When a police officer asks for an assist or calls for help, we do not think of who it may be or if we know them. We go. Dangerous calls we go. That is our brother and sisterhood. We are a family. We don't run away from the danger, we run to it. That is a police officer. That is what John Northen our brother made a complaint about. Maybe not 100 percent of the department feels that way, but 99.9 percent agree.
J-Fled will announce his resignation shortly to become police chief in Conchordville, PA.
Thanks for being there for us, Sarge. FOP is worthless.
