The tavern robbery scene in CODE OF SILENCE with Chuck Norris was filmed at Mike's. It really happened there. Talk about LOSERS: two mutts from Cabrini-Green picked a cop bar for a stick-up. Hysterical.
What a great place to commiserate with our buddies over a few cold ones after chasing the wildebeest all night. By dawn, it was hook up time with the ladies. From the outside, you couldn't even tell it was a saloon.
God bless Mike and Gladys!
He will be missed! RIP MIKE!
I still remember the first night I made it past the front door at Mike's. It was before I was the police, escorted in by the police (the ONLY way in at the time). I drove past it once before I even noticed that invisible building. Lucky I spotted my friend's car outside.
At that moment, I had no idea how special that place was, or what special people he and his sister were. Many a promotion and, sadly, many a loss, was marked there.
Rest in well-deserved peace, Mike.
Started going to Mike's in 1971, wish I had a nickel for every time I tapped on the window. If God has a sense of humor, he'll buzz Mike in, and then mix a drink for him using a damn shot glass.
Thanks for all the memories Mike.
One of the old 4 to 4 guys.
This Bud's for you Mike. God Bless.
RIP Mike our Mexico trips were great!!!!
Mike:
I'm positive there are no more like you - RIP my friend!
many happy moments at Mike's and many sad ones.....
in some ways an early version of bar in Star wars.......
different days, way different police department, more good bosses than bad,(it seems)...
God give you rest,Mike...
Mike was a gentleman and such a class act. He must have gone to a few retired police wakes a week dressed to the 9's. Everybody loved Mike and Gladys.
Now it's our turn.
Godspeed, Mike.
Mikes' was a place that you would go into an just plain relax, if you and another guy had a problem you wouldn't dare do anything stupid inside his place, he would put a huge spread out on holidays and any time he felt like doing it, this place was beautiful in its own way. but once the yuppies begin to move in they would complain about it being open late, then they wanted to migrate in and then Mike decide to cxlose up, he would never jeopardize the police and our humor. Anytime a copper needed help, Mike did his part, he showed up at more parties then anyone I could remember. and he would meet you once and never forget your name, Mike may God welcome you with great pride and I know there are many of your friends waiting to welcome you. God Speed and rest in peace, God Loves You and so do we, Your Firends from Many Police Departments.
Many great memories of Mike and Mikes. He always treated everyone with respect and knew your name.
R.I.P. Mike!
Luved Mikes bar, second to IRA's.
The last time I was there was circa 1995/6? It was loaded with YUPPIES and Artsy-Fartsy types. It was so crowded, I couldn't get to the bar. Good for Mike thu, at least he made some $$$.
RIP Mike
God Bless Mike and Mike's
Here was a man that loved us and provided us with a safe place to decompress and unwind. There was bullshit, there was humor, tears, bravado and a few, well, secrets that I will take to the grave. Mike’s was better for any cop than any psychologist’s couch.
I look at the gold stars at the top of this once proud department, who have forgotten or never knew this man or his place and what they did for us and think WTF.
Here's to you Mike, and Gladys wherever you are, keep a stool open for me.
Great memories, great times, great people. I can't think of another establishment now or in the future that will ever come close to water hole.
While filming "Code of Silence", Chuck Norris would wet his whistle with the coppers working the film. Of course they went to Mike's.
The would be robbery described in the film happened in Mike's years before. I believe the offenders didn't fair as well as the jokers in the film. Chuck Norris heard the story at the bar and had it added to the film. It was a little more politically correct, but you can't blame Chuck. It was filmed in a bar on Fullerton because Mike's was too small.
So, now you civilians that read this blog know why we kinda like Chuck Norris, and why we loved Mike. Rest well, Mike. You were a good soul.
Thanks for all the memories. I know God will buzz you in.
Two groups of Policemen left on this Job. Those that came on and were fortunate to commiserate @ Mikes, those that wish they could have.
RIP MIKE, CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY
I went to Mikes for the 1st time in 1983 and it was fun, funny, dark and kinda creepy all at the same time. But the Jack was yummy and he had a pool table that was in pretty good shape. If you didn't have a star in your wallet or came with someone who did, you didn't get in. Never a problem (till much later) and EVERYONE had a great time. So many parties, so many bosses with real balls, so many stories and so, so many laughs. On slow nights, Mike would sit with you and get the chance to bullshit with you and you never told him anything that he didn't remember. My mom passed away in 1985 and he showed up to the wake just to pay his respects. Tuesday will be 25 years since she passed away and I know there will be a cold one waiting for me when I get to the "Chicago Cloud" in heaven. Thanks Mike....for EVERYTHING!

My father spent many a time at Mikes (in the old days). He was a cop until he died at the age of 54 in 1976. Later, in my 20s and early 30s I spent some entertaining times in there with friends. It was a great place and since I grew up in the neighborhood I actually KNEW it was a cop bar. Mike was a very kind person.
I was a PPO in late 1982 when my FTO took me there after a good arrest, and mike listen to me brag and never once did he say. alright i heard it already. he was just a great guy and threw a great party..R.I.P Mike. H.B.
Always a gentleman and a great guy....had a great time on the Mexico trips. Keep a bar stool open for us up there in heaven. Take care Mike.
RIP Mike, you will be missed, It was wonderful walking from my house to your tavern and knocking on the window.
Not sure if anyone knew either but i got a message from Ira's bartenders wife, Ira passed quickly and silently in February....
Mike and Ira are having drinks on all of us. They both were great.
One constant in the life of a Chicago Police Officer is the love, support and friendship that Mike always extended. May he rest in peace and open a new Mike's in Heaven.
