Share the Pain

But don't look at our paychecks!
  • In the past few weeks, Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman has called on parents, teachers, students, central office bureaucrats, and ordinary taxpayers to do their part to help the district erase a $900 million budget deficit: Teachers should forgo promised pay hikes. Students must do without sophomore sports. Coaches should be willing to coach for free. Class sizes are likely to swell. Taxpayers should expect higher bills.
  • There are 53 departments, bureaus, or offices in the central schools bureaucracy, and the top remaining officials in every one—as well as many of their assistants—received raises, according to the budget.

For example, Calvin Davis, the director of sports, was making $122,000 last year but now makes $128,000. He's the one tasked with e-mailing assistant high school coaches telling them they'll have to work for free—rather than the paltry $1,000 to $2,500 a season they were making.

Communications director Monique Bond is budgeted to make $130,000, up from $111,000 a year ago—that's a 17 percent raise. Prior to following Huberman to CPS a little over a year ago, she was the spokeswoman for the city's police department and before that the aviation department. Last December Reader media columnist Michael Miner reported on her reputation among journalists for making it hard to get information about the schools and wondered whether that's what she'd been hired to do. I for one can attest that she does a pretty good job of blowing off my calls and e-mails.

  • And Huberman himself? His budgeted salary jumped from about $204,000 to $230,000—a hike of $26,000, or 12.7 percent. Not bad in a recession.
Once again, Ben Joravsky of The Reader does the job that should put any other so-called "investigative" reporters or teams to shame. Go read the entire article. The amount of raises given out to upper echelon drones would put a sizable dent in CPS's $900 million deficit. This article in and of itself ought to be enough to get Daley voted out of office in a year.

Huberman is nothing more than a Arrogant Incompetent Joke.
His shenanigans at OEMC should have gotten him indicted a long time ago.

I for one am a middle class tax payer tired of being asked to pony up for the monetary waste the city pays to middle and upper management. I watch my real estate taxes continually go up. Sales taxes are the highest in the nation. Enough already! Start cutting these middle management and above positions!

It is the teachers, street cleaners, light changers, garbage collectors, street pavers, water crews, firemen, policemen, etc., who do the front line work. I will gladly pay for more of them to do the work they do. I want those services, but I am tired of the crap with all the layers of middle and upper management in this city.

Typical Chicago clout and nepotism fills the ranks of these managers and above.

Don't even get me started on the shenanigans the politicians and mayor play when it comes to awarding multi-million dollar contracts.

And we should get rid of half the city council. There is no need for 50 aldermen! No need at all!!!

It's outrageous. I am a city worker who is taking 12 furlough days this year. I will not be paid for holidays and any overtime will be paid with comp time instead of cash. They just did a story at my daughter's preschool about how it will be shut down next year to save money. I can still send her there if I pay $4,ooo. And now these self serving, condescending, ass kissing, under qualified pieces of shit are taking the money for themselves?!! I've had it. Someone has to do something. Please God let someone, anyone with even some credibilty run against Daley. He has to be stopped. There must be someone in this town who can push out an old, washed up, out of touch, unintelligent, short shanked, sorry ass excuse for a mayor. Anyone?

They will close a school that services handicapped kids up North so they can give Hubberman and Monique a raise? This Daley administration has no shame. They have to go. Thanks to the Reader for keeping us informed.

Amazing how the Reader is the only paper that actually investigates these things. If the Trib and Slum Times actually did investigative journalism perhaps the wouldn't be going under.

didnt know chicago was part of the old USSR? the fat cats on top and the lowly workers on the bottom. only here we pay for the freeloaders/bullshitters and the fatcats. ever notice that there s an emotional ''cry out'' to their financial mismangement? share the pain, save the children and save this. who will save us? who will pay when the middleclass has been taxed into the ground?

Teachers should be on the same pay scale as zoo keepers, that's all they are. Getting our "future" ready to either go to jail or get killed.

On the bright side Chalky doesn't go after private school kids. Does that make him a schoolist?

It's amazing to me how he got a raise to offset the furlough days he's "voluntarily" taking, while the rest of us at CPS didn't get raises (and haven't for YEARS), and we have to MANDITORILY take the 15-days of furlough... What's even more amazing is that Monique Bond admitted it!!

Luberman has been awarding contracts to private greedy corporations for years. Remember OMC, CTA CPD

Jackie Heard who was the Mayors chief of staff, she left now works for our new meter company, She brokered the deal. Millions went in her pocket. (this should be some type of conflict)Your guy Mauer is no different went to the airport making 6 figures. Luberman will land on his feet, HE knows to much.

Are you an IDIOT? These are contract issue furloughs. The city just lost big time on the FTO thing and you are dumb enough to ask if the city is once again willing to take a chance on violating our contract ? Where do you people come up with this stuff...troll ?
