Officer Stabbed

  • Chicago police Tasered a Hyde Park man after he stabbed an officer in the leg during a domestic disturbance at the man's home.

The unidentified officer suffered only a minor stab wound and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.

Officers were called about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday to Jason Johnson's home in the 5100 block of South University Avenue. His mother was seeking help in getting her son a psychiatric evaluation, police said.

Speedy recovery Officer.

Apparently geniuses went hands-on with a mental holding knife(a couple more in his pockets). I think i missed that class in academy called " disarming armed assailants with bare hands". Thats what my gun is for.

Joe the Cop from ChicagoNow has an interesting take on city violence and a link to a great story from ABC7 showing bangers taunting someone who was shot while a CPD sergeant stands by with a rifle.

I guess he passed the power test.

Unfuckingbelievable.

Speedy Recovery Officer

(Most) Body Armor will not protect against knife attacks.

For God's sake please DO NOT CARRY THESE FLIP IT OPEN COMBAT KNIVES EXPOSED IN YOUR VEST POCKETS. That is just asking for tragedy.
(It doesn't say so but could that have happpened in this case.)

See the Calibre Press Video on Surviving Edge Weapons.

Psychos with knives in close quarters should be shot, not tased.

Do not rely on that Taser when a gun is warranted.

Umm ya last I checked we shot motherfuckers for stabbing us. Put the taser down and drop these assholes once and for all! The next copper he stabs might not be so lucky to get it in the leg. Sorry for the Monday morning Quarterbacking but really knife comes out gun comes out but maybe that's just me...and If the knife is stuck in my leg that just means I have more time to aim. Good to hear the officer is OK though get well soon brother.

This is exactly why I do NOT like tasers. If some motherF***** stabs you or has a DEADLY WEAPON you shoot the prick...WITH YOUR GUN NOT TASER!

A stabbing responded with a Tasing?

The officer who did the Tasing needs a review of the use of force paradigm.

A traffic jam plaintiff's attorneys' Lexuses at the U of C Hospital garage was reported following the use of a taser in Hyde Park. Attorneys abandoned their cars at the entrance to the garage, running toward the emergency room screaming "I'm here to help! Where's the poor innocent they tasered?

From what I heard, the offender didn't show the knife until he was close enough to Stab the officer, leaving the knife sticking out of his leg then backed off. Not sure on details of tasing.

From Joseph Wambaugh's "The New Centurions".

George C. Scott is in his element as Kilvinski, the philosophical 20-year veteran who mentors his new night shift partner, Roy (Stacy Keach), a "slick-sleeved" rookie. "Kilvinski's Law," he growls, "If a dude uses his fist, you use your stick. If he uses a stick you use your gun."

Kilvinski's Law updated: "If a dude uses his fists use your TASER, if he uses a knife use your gun, just don't bitch slap the bastard or J-Fled will pull a Cozzi on you knife or not."

Speedy recovery, Office. I was NOT on scene and I'm NOT 2nd guessing the injured officer. However, I recently worked days in 021 for a period of time. It ALWAYS bothered me that some fellow officers were VERY lax (not properly using the Use of Force Model) while interacting with unknown subjects and/or offenders because "we are in 021 and not in 007 or 011." 021 is slower than most districts, but it is NOT an excuse to compromise officer safety. Back up was also VERY slow on days (beat cars, rapids, an incident car, a traffic car, a wagon, 2 outside school units, and even 3 foot posts were up, but very few were available to assist b/c most stayed down on BS jobs leaving TAC to respond to in-progrss calls) often resulting in the U of C Police or a car from 002(same zone) sliding by my job if I needed an assist (U of C Police mainly patrol the campus on days). Hopefully, things have improved for the safety of all officers, not just the working ones on the
2nd Watch. If not, close down 021 and send the much needed manpower to the busier districts where they are working 99 on the 1st & 3rd Watches. 003 can patrol 55th-61st, Cottage east to the Lake, U of C PD can patrol all of Hyde Park, the Secret Service can protect Obama's house, 002 can take the rest of 021 east of the Ryan, 009 can take Armour Square, and 001 can patrol Chinatown.

OT: This City is gone crime way up and property values down and no one wants to come here. Killings in the downtown. Killings on the expressways. Killings in every part of the city. Time to get out while you have a chance because in 2 or 3 years you wont have shit. Just look at Detroit and then look at New York and you decide which way Chicago is going.

I recall an incident where a sergeant (?) was called to the scene of a man with a machete. I can't recall if the man had killed or injured his relative/family member.

Anyway, the sergeant ordered the man to drop the machete and surrender to arrest. The man did refuse and he did affirm his resistance by elevating the machete above his head.

The sergeant, aiming his revolver at the offender, said, "Sir, it is not often that a man gets to pick the time and place he wants to die, but you just did." And, of course, the sergeant shot and killed him. Justifiable homocide.

Can anyone confirm or perhaps embellish/exaggerate my account? Or is this another Police Academy story? Please don't disclaim or deny the story; I have too much fun recounting it!

Thanks guys and gals! I sure do miss the clowns!!!

First and foremost none of you critics were on the scene. If you were and knew how this incident occured you'd have different wise cracks to make. Stop being freakin Monday morning quarterbacks and find out the real story. This was not a Domestic Disturbance, Jason Johnson did not display a weapon until after the struggle to restrain him began, and the officer that was injured did have his service weapon, not taser out as he should've. Officers did not go hands on with a mental holding a knife. God Bless all the officers that were involved. And to those that have done, and do real police work continue to get home safe.

Similar circumstances decades ago in Burger King. The line was: "This is Burger King. Have it your way." Bad guy dies. Those were simpler times.

Use a line like that now and you go to jail instead of the Award ceremony. If they just pulled the Award, it would be worth it.

Thanks to all who responded with confirmation! Sergeant Ronald Schultz: YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!!!
One of the finest "COP'S COP" supervisors! He was involved in a disagreement with a deputy chief from Area Six (now Area 3) and got detailed to the 4th District (late 1970's) on midnights guarding the incinerator at 103rd and Doty. Man, what those Chiefs could do at that time: With immunity!!
