Station Problems

Daley's capital improvements of police stations has been a pretty spectacular success. By success, we mean for connected construction companies. We're starting an office pool to see which building gets condemned first...or falls down:
  • 001 leads the pack with the video from yesterday with the settlement cracks, jammed doors and sinking floors. The only things holding that building together are the drywall and plumbing pipes;
  • Headquarters is a close second with the walls that don't touch the floor. Masters and J-Fled were seen racing hot wheel cars down the 5th Floor hallway which at last count had a 5 degree slope toward Georgas' office. And we can only imagine that the parking lot that drains toward the building is the envy of architects worldwide;
  • 016 with the shifting parking structure is a wonder;
  • 022 has begun its slow decline with sticky doorways and "settlement" cracks toward the center of the building;
  • 010 with its top notch electric system triggers false fire alarms regularly and the sally port door is almost working 30% of the time;
And in case you think the old buildings aren't holding up their end:
  • 012 and 013 are rumored to be asbestos contaminated;
  • 002 has toxic mold;
  • 011 has mold and open sewer pipes that give the entire station a certain "eau de toilette" feel;
More entries?

No need to worry, SCC. 011 never fails to disappoint. Pictures forthcoming very soon. The men's locker room is an OSHA nightmare. And should any fertile female ever wander in there by accident, she'd leave either impregnated, with an STD, or both. Some of the shit living in there will outlive cockroaches AND Keith Richards.

Stay tuned.

The old 006th district was a toxic cancer cluster. About 40 po's and bosses I knew including three former commanders and a former supt contracted some form of cancer from the 819 W 85th st station. The Halsted station is dilapidated and vermin infested and has major structural faults and problems.

I remember the flood in the hallway in 011 a few years back from the faulty pipes in the ceiling. It was like Niagara Falls and the wonderful maintenance that couldn't get it to stop.

Let's not mention the stench coming from the bathrooms.

Things you can't see in the video;

1. The ceiling is now domed from the buckling of the walls.

2. There is at least a 2 inch gap where the wall used to meet the floor.

3. You can see into the next room through the gaps in the wall.

4. The door jam is completely twisted and the door can no longer close.

5. The caulking that was put into the crack to conceal it is now stretched and broken.

The 10th District, the 16th, the 18th, the 22nd, and all the other new stations of similar designs have been called ALAMO MODERN.

They were designed as missions not as forts. There’s too much glass, entrances which cannot be watched from a one point, parking lots which cannot be secured and security systems which were never properly designed or installed.

If a civil disturbance erupts the front windows will be shattered and there is no way you are going to defend those stations without people getting hurt.

The heating and air conditioning systems leave some areas to freeze and some rooms become ovens. There is no control over them without calling for an engineer. The handicapped shower stalls demanded by the American with Disabilities Act cause flooded locker rooms.

The front public areas could have been designed with more protection for desk personal, like they have in almost every modern suburban station.

The people in charge of police buildings should ask those who actually work there what should be changed. But they will consult a policy group who never sets foot in a real police station.

Don't forget the new 009th District station: the door to the processing room is continually broken, major safety issue. The power goes off in the building just about every day, leaving officers who are doing case reports or arrest reports on the computers in a jam when their reports disappear into limbo. Then there is the wonderful alarms that go off due to the pump room failures. Add to this mix the wonderful backed up sewer smells! What great new buildings we have!

All old districts are mold, mildew and cockroach infested. Area five is tecnically the most new area building, and it has been visited by OSHA on many occasions since day one. Nothing happens.

Yet we all pay high medical bills out of our pockets (because its not covered) to go to Doctor Dolly Thomas and get our allergy shots and presciptions that basically do nothing.

Besides the crappy construction, who designed them???????
Built after 9-11 so why are they so accessible and open????
Do you really need westside felons wandering around in a lobby 60 yards wide?? No metal detectors??? WTF? How many times and places has someone walked into a station the last 15 years and opened fire???
And good thing the front desk is 30 yards long on granite counter top for the (wink,wink) 1 po working it?
Why do you need a twelve foot tall, 3 foot wide steel bathroom door in lock-up for the officers? There isn't a door to get in there that big so WTF???? Other than it was more expensive to custom make it.
Why do windows gotta be super extra large that require an electronic shade system other than more$$$?
Why do exterior doors have to be crappy catch locks that never work?
Why do sinks in bathrooms locker rooms gotta be the most expensive looking contraption, poorest water delivery system ever made????(you gotta see these things)
I can go on and on but whatever! Sorry for the rant but no wonder the city has no money they waste it on everything.

Did the jag off policy group have something to do with this too????? I hate that some jag can screw shit up so bad and nothing ever happens.

Placing anything on the floor of your locker will result in a water logged mess which you would have to throw away.

Ah yes, 011 is a cockroach paradise. For starters, the mold and mildew is on every floor, in every bathroom. The lockup...well the insect population will rival the prisoner population any given day. The female locker room...sewage dripping down any time certain toilets are flushed on the second floor (you can see the brown stains that run down the wall). Female locker room also comes complete with rat traps and no hot water in the faucets. The men's locker room...well, you can smell it from 50 feet away. Any piece of metal in the building has become a jagged, rusty death trap. But not to worry, every time a sink leaks or a toilet overflows, maintenance is there to cover it with a plastic bag for weeks.

019/A3 is asbestos contaminated too.

Some time ago some environmental people came and took samples and would not reveal what they found. It's insulating all the pipes up in the false ceilings and the place would have to be totally shut down and sealed off to remove that stuff.

Anyone want to make sure, just slide back those acoustic tiles, take some of that flaky stuff off the pipes and send it to the EPA. but be careful.

And do what, lose their job? No City building inspector will ever find anything negative with a City police station.

The gas tanks at Area 1 used to leak so badly that the basement of Area 1 reeked of raw gasoline whenever the tanks over at the garage were refueled. Those tanks were a city block away!

No one could stay in that basement during or right after a refuel because the gasoline stench was so overpowering.

Since no officers trust the stations gun lockers they often leave them in other areas. Lets face it, the gun lockers DO NOT WORK! instead of putting an officers firearm elsewhere, we should just keep on our persons.

Check out the slope in the front hallway by the ADS office, then look at the 5 inch gap behind the wall for the security desk!

The sewer stench in the Admin. section will make you pass out!

In the summer there are mosquito's everywhere. I could see a few getting in when a door is opened, but this is like they breed there. There was a LT. that worked there that hung a mosquito zapper in his office because there were so many!

When they remodeled, caulk was used to cover the biggest cracks.

Check out the women's staff washroom on the first floor! They filled the to inch wide cracks with caulk (all over the place (up, down, sideways.)

What the Cubs and Sox should do is hire the defensive ends from the Bears, uniform them as security guards and have microphones on them. When it happens here turn them loose and turn up the volumn. You will hear the pounding of their running feet, the snorting and panting of their breath as they near their prey, the crushing 000FF as the lungs colapse and the bones break, the blood spurts as he is smeared onto the freshly cut grass under a half ton of fast moving muscle.

The Air still don't work but hasn't for 5 years.

The plumbing is bad, they just keep putting plastic bags over the toilets.

Ceiling panels were remove and never replaced.

Several of the out door support columns are rusted away at the base and the others are sinking into the ground.

$200,000.00 worth of artwork was removed by the construction company and thrown into a dumpster.

024-rains indoors when it rains. mold growing on the floors...absolutely disgusting. so much funk in the air the front desk has headaches/sinus issues constantly

no keys to the juvy room.

absolutely no cars that are under 90,000 on the odometer

front office takes away all the printers and then locks the front office when they leave at 4:58...so no one can get to paper/contact cards/etc.

i would suffer all of this if we didn't have to deal with the completely worthless A/3 detective division....

Off topic, as a donstate cop I was once again impressed with the number of CPD cops and the Pipe and Drum corps at the state memorial in Springfield today to honor not only your fallen but the others as well. Made me sick to have to listen to J-Fled talk about officers running toward the face of danger instead of away given what I have read on here daily and seen with his interview where he "didn't hear" the gun fire. Stay safe up there.

OT: Major pension news from an FOP. The city and state drew up a bill and were trying yesterday to get it introduced and passed which would lower our pension percentage calculator and extend the minimun retirement age. So basically we wouldn't get to retire till 57 or so and max would be 72%. I guess they have a lot of backers down there in springfield and this has a very good chance of passing.
This is getting very scary guys.

5/06/2010 10:41:00 AM

That would be a massive change. We need to hear from Mike Shields. Hauser told me different figures at the last FOP meeting but I would trust Shields more.

Instead of the state and city worrying about lowering our pensions to say 57 years and 72%, why dont they think about lowering the 80% that judges and legislators get along with the state police and some county employees And also look at the other plans like the state police, etc that calculate your pension on the last DAY worked, not the average of 4 years

You would think that this would be a nice juicy story on the order of hired truck if any reporter had the balls to investigate. Get some hidden camera shots inside the buildings. Hell, headquarters is a mess. I was up there once and got dizzy from the floors being so wavy. this should be a give me for some bright reporter. they won't because we are not "sympathetic" characters, everyone hates us. The front public areas could have been designed with more protection for desk personal, like they have in almost every modern suburban station.

--------------

Let's get one thing clear. I do not care about your protection.

I do not care about your job or what you think you need to do your job.

I do not care about the law. I do not care if it is enforced.

I care about votes.

If making you arrest people will get me votes, then I will make you arrest people. I will open up units and give you goodies to do my bidding and you will do it because you are stupid. If your arrests are legal or illegal, I do not care.

If putting you into a jail cell will get me votes, then I will put you into a jail cell. I do not care if you are charged when no one else would be. I do not care if you are found not guilty after many years in limbo. I will just put another one of you into jail.

If more people are murdered, then the guns did it. If less people are murdered, then it is only by my hand that they lived.

I do not care if you like this city. This is my city. I let you live here.

I am the boss. It is not my job to care about you. It is your job to do what I tell you to do.

I am the boss of you. I am the boss of everyone.

021 is asbestos contaminated. I was told by an engineer that if they were to remove the floor tiles," The Asbestos ones " the station would have to be closed down during the process, the entire building would have to be sealed and the workers would have to wear special suits. Imagine all the people that work in this shit every day, if ytou drop something, when you pick it up it has red dust on it. Asbestos tile dust, Maybe the FOP should send OSHA there. HELLO....

Funny to hear the same problems on the other side...our firehouses are in the same condition....they are just slapping perfume on a pig...most of these house are easily 60-100 years old. Most of the old houses you can't even go in to the basements...the one behind your 022 district - you are not even allowed into the basement - it's condemned between the water leaks, sewage leaks and mold... The one thy closed last year had the ceiling dropping on people, you would be covered in a fine white dust by the next day and have a HORRIBLE cough when you went home..

A think of Daley and the aldercrooks as Slum lords and much like Joe Pesci's character - they should be made to live, work and function in those environments... You know damn well, if this was their offices, there would be MAJOR overhauls!!

The academy is an older building but has been sinking for years!

The academy must have been the first contract that Walsh had with the city!!!!!

5/06/2010 11:14:00 AM

...............

You forgot to mention when they "remodeled" the academy it was all cosmetic. The heating, air conditioning and plumbing are all the same. Nothing was done to upgrade these things. The building engineer has to climb a 12 foot ladder in numerous spots in order to open and close vents to regulate the heat and air conditioning. The automatic controls were shot years ago and even after numerous requests to fix or replace them nothing has been done.

And don't get me started on how they had to close the range for months because no ever replaced the air filters causing huge amounts of lead build-up over the years. All the range instructors have taken numerous blood tests to check their lead levels.

5/06/2010 07:18:00 AM

Fucking architects think of that shit. They are useless on a construction site. They design things aesthetically rather than for function and purpose. They go to school to become idiots that drive project managers crazy with their curved walls and glass and windows. They're assholes. They don't really know how to actually build anything. They just design shit. And it's usually ridiculous.
And then they think everything works in the real world like it does in the spec book. If you're a foreman, the very first thing you have to do is make a fool out of the architect. When you point out the difference between the specs and the actual labor they get this glazed look on their face and usually never come past the trailer for the duration of the job.

Let's see...

in 003 the toilets sometimes run hot water. The desk crew has people looking down at them (can we say unsafe??). There is a leak in the vendeteria that has been there so long there is a trash bag taped to it leading into a garbage can to "catch" the water.

in 010 one of the toilets continues flushing for minutes...until someone flushes a different toilet. The original gun lockers half of the keys worked in two different lockers...how is that for safety??? (and they were only re-keyed AFTER the 16 yo impersonator) The parking lot started deteriorating almost immediately after the station was opened. Large holes next to sewer drains...huge cracks in the lot. Obviously the lowest bidder built this place!!!

Most of the districts if a sink or toilet breaks they cover it with a trash bag for months and sometimes years. Also leaky faucets continue to leak for a minimum of a few months.

The radios, tasers, rifles, etc should be by the desk, the roll call room should be by the desk.

We don't need civilian groups using the "community rooms" We don't need hoards of high schoolers in the station everyday.

the other problem with this issue is that we have district managers who are responsible for documenting and following up on getting repairs completed at these stations. That means something simple like making the request as often as necessary. each district manager makes over 70 grand in salary. but they do nothing to make sure even the basic repairs get completed. why does the city keep them on the payroll? Ask any commander if they would keep the district manager or trade them in for one more officer. every commander would say (privately) get rid of the slug (manager). unfortunately, the commanders do not say it collectively to the Sup't or Mayor's people. In fact, commander's won't even say it to the district managers. But on the side, commanders do talk about how they feel. Unfortunately, that does not help.

I have always thought that the city told the contractor they wanted an office building and somewhere along the line during the planning process, when everything was almost done, the city said, 'Oh by the way, these will be police stations'. And the contractor said "No problem, we'll just tweak a couple things: we'll make the front look like bank teller stations and throw a lockup in the back, its all good"

Thats why at the beginning none of the access cards worked after 2000 hours or on any holidays.

Don't use the gun lockers in the new stations. I hear officers have to pry the lock open to get their guns back. They need to get rid of the whole locking up your gun while in the processing area.

The locks on the gun lockers in 015 have been replaced at least 5 times. The last time they LOOKED like better quality locks, but alas, just like what you said, they just turn and turn with your gun it it. Good thing tact's hooley bar was available.

Asbestos contaminated not a real problem even if EPA and City want to ignore it. First, video tape PO obtaining samples from insulation from pipes, false acoustic ceilings tiles, and boiler also paint chips from walls. Second, video tape samples being sent to lab on own dime since lab tests on asbestos and lead paint very cheap. Third, since it's a health issue might not even need to involve FOP in law suite under Federal Asbestos Act and I believe an Ill contract has no coverage in violating State or Federal Law. Any PO with related cancer problems file suite.
