Pay to Pray

  • Ever since the steeple of Chicago's First United Methodist Church went up across the street from City Hall in the 1830s, worshippers have sought a place to hitch their horse or park their station wagon to pray.

But since the city privatized its parking meters last year, more churchgoers have encountered unanswered prayers for parking. Pricey meters and restricted curbside parking now surround historic houses of worship in the Loop, forcing the faithful to pay to pray or get free parking by volunteering for soup kitchens, tutoring or other ministries.

Some pastors are pushing the city to consider what churches contribute to city life and ease parking restrictions for congregants, especially on Sunday mornings when commercial and government traffic is light.
Shortshanks is only irritating Methodists it seems, and a Presbyterian or two. Not Meeks.

There used to be no parking signs all around the house of mope play church. Then someone wrote a couple tickets on cars parked there. The result was the PO getting scolded, the tickets nonsuited, and the signs disappearing.

This is because he knows that the downtown well-to-do folks will pay the parking fees. Do it on the west and south sides where there is a church on every other corner and you'd never hear the fucking end of it! If I still worked in one of those neighborhoods and was a bid spot on days, as much as I don't condone making any money for the city, I'd HAMMER those churches and any vehicle parked illegally.

Why can't they get the same deal Rev TROTTER does? They double and triple park their cars on both sides of South Chicago Avenue at 87th St. Bus Stop, Fire hydrant - no problem. Just park in it or block it. A fine example of being politically connected in Chicago.

Why don't they just double park in the middle of the street like on the west side?

How ironinc that the Mayor's former star Trotter was annointed by the reverends and he now runs the parking sell out that is affecting them and their flock :-)

Reverent Meeks' House of Hope has
it's own parking lots.
One for the tithers and the other
for the "freewill offerings" crowd.
The tithers lot has valet parking available.

If anyone can afford to pay one of the contrived parking violations around a ghetto "church", it's one of the brand new Lexus or Cadillac-driving, phony-ass, no-tax-paying pseudo-reverends in the storefront MB "churches" and the members of their flocks.

Just watch and see how fast Shortshanks caves to the demands of these bastards. You think it was blasphemy to hang a ticket on a double-parked car near a church on a Sunday? That won't be shit compared to the Hell these mopes are going to raise with this issue.

And again, these non-contributors will be given a pass and the DOR will just pick up the pace in Mt. Greenwood, Garfield Ridge, Edison Park and other neighborhoods comprised of City workers who know they have to pay their tickets.

Keep in mind, these are churches that get all of their fees waived. Building a new building? Permits are free. Have a sign over the public way? Free. Water bills? Free.

Hard to feel bad when they get so much for free.

daley fucks all the houses of worship equally in our shity city, except the "ethnic" places of worship on the West & South sides. As a young P.O. who wrote around a "Church" on Roosevelt Rd in 1969, I had to go see the Rev who gave me the citations to give to the W/C (Iron Mike Leahy) so they could be non-suited. He chewed my ass real good & told me leave them folks alone. He felt the same about the taverns in the area. Said I could write there after the gin mills closed for the night.

We have almost 2200 damn churches in this city....for what reason?

That's more than in some STATES.

As a child of an Irish Catholic family...

Screw the Reverends and etc...

Park right or get hammered.

And guys and gals in Blue.....

Keep in mind DoR doesn't work on Sundays or Saturdays.

You have to make the point yourselves.

Don't forget the parking @ Bishop Brazer church. 6300 S. Dorchester. They park wherever they want. Have been told several times in roll call to extend a courtesy.

I'm loving those lutherans. At least they don't have to put up with the pedophile priest crap that never goes away in the Catholic church. It's like 35th st., just swept under that HUGE rug. Every once in awhile they put on a front of cleansing the priest vermin, but it's just for show and basically smoke and mirrors. They get rid of the priest and he's hidden away for rehab, only to reappear at some other poor parish who don't have a clue who's putting a host on their tongue. I gave up on the Catholice church a long time ago.

RE Meeks: how does he separate himself from the church preacher to the state rep? Sounds like a conflict of interest, but he gets away with it because of his skin tone.
