Fewer Taste Arrests

  • Arrests were down from a year ago during the city's revamped fireworks display of three smaller shows along the lakefront, Chicago police said Monday.

Police Supt. Jody Weis said there were seven arrests Sunday night. Last year, there were 30 arrests during the single fireworks show at Grant Park.

"If you look at the results, we had pretty much an incident-free night," Weis said of the fireworks shows during a news conference at police headquarters. "It did take away the massive push in Grant Park."

In all, 1,000 police officers fanned out to cover the 26 miles of lakefront on Sunday.

  • Far fewer people tasted Chicago this year than in recent years.

The 2010 Taste of Chicago drew 2.65 million people, about 700,000 fewer than the 3.35 million who attended the summer chow-fest in 2009.

The 21 percent attendance drop was mainly because the city canceled the July 3 Grant Park fireworks, an event that would bring more than 1 million downtown and through the Taste booths on that day alone, said Cindy Gatziolis of the Mayor's Office of Special Events.

A 21% drop in attendance would produce fewer arrests. So would a Department that is so far into survival mode, it wouldn't take anyone into custody on questionable grounds even at the direction of Shortshanks himself.

In any event, all the police went home safe. That's cause for celebration in and of itself.

PERHAPS THAT WOULD APPLY TO THE TASTE, BUT A DAY LATER & THE TACT TEAMS ARE BACK, THE DUMMY ARRESTS CONTINUE AS ALWAYS.

Fewer arrests because the police don't give a damn about this city that does not respect them. Congrats citizens, you now have the police department the dumb ass revrends wanted.

Didn't go there myself, had better things to do.

But, didn't the Taste close a 6 PM (1800 hours)? Earlier than other years.

Less time to enjoy the evening.

Less time to let the bad guys roam for victims. If it were only that easy to close down all those block parties.

I can't stand seeing J-Fled on TV at these press conferences. He looks goofy and very unprofessional in his polo shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters and everything else but a suit and tie. Maybe Blago can take him shopping one day during court recess.

We were told, no arrests unless they were "the big one". "We need the bodies on the street". Looked the other way for alot of nonsense.

I heard a rumor from someone in ght Mayor's Office that revenues for the Taste are down 40% of the last two years. Violence and gan-y-ness has a way of driving off the patrons.

Hope you all have had your fill of pickle-on-a-stick, because I think we can say goodbye to the Taste.

Its been suggested many times...CHARGE TO GET INTO THE TASTE!" This will stop the thugs from entering and give the city much needed funds...maybe even pay for the police to be there!!

Have to disagree, with the polo shirt part not with the goofy part. A suit and tie outside in hot weather would look even more GOOFY. Like why am I out here I belong in an office somewhere.

At least he didn't wear the uniform. That would be really digusting.

There were fewer taste arrests because they were far fewer people attending the taste. About 700,000 fewer, if you believe City of Chicago statistics. If past experience is any guide, the real figure is likely way over a million fewer in attendance.

Leon of Leon's ribs reported making a lot less money.

Never ever trust any statistics reported by anyone from the City or the Police Department unless you verified them yourself.
