Murderer to Serve on Police Board

  • Some police officers are furious that Mayor Dave Bing wants to nominate a convicted murderer to serve on a board that metes out discipline to cops and sets department policy.

Others argue Raphael B. Johnson, who served 12 years in prison for second-degree murder and is now a motivational speaker, is an inspiration and would be a good fit for the unpaid, four-member Board of Police Commissioners.

We just head a light bulb go off over Shortshanks head. It was only a 40-watt bulb, but it was a bulb anyway.

Shanks is thinking that it would be a nice job for Ike Carothers to take leadership of when he gets out of college/Fed. Pen. He's just wondering how to pay him $200,000.00 annually for the job.

I am not a big fan of FOP. However, if a dirtbag is going on the Police Board, so should a maybe of FOP. Maybe a little bit of equity would go a long way. Maybe the Police Boaed meetings should be video taped just like our calls. The Police Board decisions should be published for all to view.

I'd rather have a murderer on my police board, rather than the fucking theives that exist now.

In my opinion, I'm not entirely opposed to having someone with a 'record' on the police board- there is an operational synergy there- but the vetting process for whoever it is must be colossal and I don't think a murderer is a good choice, regardless of how he's 'turned his life around'. Ideally, it would be Working Joe Sixpack with some distant-past drug beef, or whatever.

There are people out there with past dings on their records who are capable of being objective- but you cannot endeavor to find such a person by simply picking the first idiot to sign on the dotted line.

A murder? Gone way, WAY too far with that sentiment... Bad decision.

A lot of people bash the police board with no justification.
I was railroaded by our wonderful IAD and ended up before the board. The board ruled in my favor unanimously. They really do see thru a witch hunt! They are fair and dont care if you have a brick on you by a head hunter at IAD.
In fact, if you would look into the stats of police board decisions, you will find that most of the officers who are fired, did actually commit a violation that warranted being fired. The cases are part of FOIA Act and can be requested for viewing.
Have there been instances of people losing their jobs on very "iffy" cases? Yes of course this has happened. In cases where there are objections over-ruled but allowed by the hearing officer at a hearing,or other scenarios that were screwed up, the Chancellory Division of the courts has over-turned and sent back to the board for suspension rather than firing.
Take time and go to the hearings-the police board will tell you when the next dates are and you can see how a hearing is conducted and support a fellow officer. There is a website for the police board and shows what cases are there and the date of next continuance.

The police board never actually hears a case as a sitting board. They only see a tape of the hearing officer and the witnesses. The tape is sent to their offices to view individually. No discussion between them unless sit comes over the telephone .

Anonymous, I loved your analogy
about the sheepdog being fired

services. Is is real food for
thought.

The other day I made a comment on FB about how it wouldn't surprise me if convicted cop killers got paroled and everyone got mad at me because apparently they thought that wouldn't happen. This is a precursor to it. Who in their right fucking mind would hire a convicted murderer for ANYTHING????? Daley, that's who. Anyone running for mayor that want's that line, take it.

Someone who has truly reformed themselves might not be a bad choice.

No one is perfect and the political hacks that almost always infect these kind of appointed boards are often scum anyway. They just wear suits and ties and hobnob with the power minds.

It might be an improvement.

Inspirational speaker my ass. Reminds me of another murderer from Lake County Michigan that did his time and was made friend of the court. Oh did I happen to mention that during that time he abducted a girl, later threw her out of a car trunk for dead 75 miles away and is in prison for the rest of his life now,, along with two sons in the same prison for murder. (later incident..) Not only hell but hell no. Let them be reborn in Heaven.
