- Mike and I ended his presentation with a handshake and the agreement that we will work together for the good of the membership. Mike is the "Actives" representative on the Pension Board and although I don't feel we disagree about our responsibilities, we have had disagreements over how to best carry out those responsibilities.
The City Treasurer, operating under who knows what fantasy spun by her handler, has decided to make Shields the issue (attack the messenger) rather than her conflicts of interest in accepting money from people who do business with our Pension Fund. In our humble opinions, the FOP should have been way out in front of this, attacking the Treasurer and defending Shields' discovery. Shields might be rough around the edges, but he's a tenacious bulldog on the Pension Board.
The status quo needs some shaking up and the FOP would do better to harness the building movement than trying to stifle it.

It doesn't matter what the issue is we have never seen or heard anyone from FOP step up and go public on anything. We see other FOP leaders all over the country standing up in public and speaking out, but NO not our EVER! Just watch and see what type of jobs these guys get when their time is up. In chicago corruption infects every office.
you know I locked up some knuckleheads for a minor theft recently ... had to wonder, I mean I really had to wonder. These kids got locked up, get a court date and the wrongs will be remedied by the court system (ya, right). Then I look at the Bernie Madoff thing where he stole $80M. 2-3 hours worth of paperwork and no real punishment they will get here in Cook Co. Other than the victim's getting their property back it was pretty much a complete waste of time. The snakes are high up on the ladder. We generally can't see them much less touch them. Sorry, a little depressed about it all. Stupid post, I know.
The biggest bomb in the anti-Donahue arsenal has yet to leave the holding bay. The "det-cord" is still being "unwound" and attached, if you will.

Vote the rest of the Union guys out, send them back to the units/districts they came from, and put Mike Shields in there with new blood.

I know I will be called a rebel....disgruntled, etc. But I have asked for years. How do I quit the F.O.P.? I mean the couple a times I called them I got smoke blown up my who-who. The one and only time I filed a grievance they sided with the city and blew me off. How do I quit the F.O.P.? Think about it. If 50% of us ask this question, then maybe just maybe...I doubt it but maybe someone will wake up?

About fifteen years ago or so Donahue was assigned to 009 Dist. and was involve in the FOP (not sure if he was Dist Rep. or held some other position with the FOP). The FOP and the city were hammering out a new contract and it was coming up for a membership vote. Donahue got up after roll call to sell the contract to us and everyone listened. After roll call Donahue was approached by one of the officers who objected to a lot of the stuff said with Donahue trying his best to convince the officer it was a good contract. After the officer brought up specifics Donahue said “oh, I see you read the contract” and then walked away. True story, I was standing right there when it happened. Right then and there I lost all respect for Donahue and realized he is nothing but a politician.

If anyone is interested in putting up signs on billboards or pace bus stops (Cause the CTA will never let us put up a sign on a CTA one) LET ME KNOW. I have been making calls to a few places who do the billboard and bus stop signs. I was looking into it for certain judges that are up for retention and should NOT be retained. But this would be another great cause. They run from about 400 to 1,000 a month for one billboard. Yard signs are alittle cheaper about 200 250 bucks for a humdredemail me at CPD4Judge@yahoo.com

Other than being a loud mouth what has Shields actually accomplished? Yes its nice to have someone that stirs the pot and rabble rouses but ill take results over that behavior anyday. I'm not really a Fop fan but under them we have a new work schedule 55 and out health care, no furlough days. Although not a good one we at least got a raise when others are getting laid off. Look at the big picture once in a while.
Guess it took a while but Donahue has become another City puppet much like previous FOP , Presidents., remember Nolan. Their looking into the future and positions offered by the City. What a sell-out for us FOP members.Mike Shields, your the man, who looks out for the team. The FOP rank and file team. We got your back unlike others who have spoken those words to the troops.
Giuliani, State law states you can not leave your bargaining unit. The FOP does this for you. You may become Fair Share which you only pay union dues for the portion of the cost of collective bargaining and related issues ie grievances. The problem with this is you lose Legal Defense which is not part of collective bargaining. The 10 dollars you would save a month is easily eaten up by a 3 hour statement with a lawyer at IPRA.
I read all of Mike's articles and they always get me thinking. I can't understand why the heck the FOP thinks we want fluff instead of facts. This leadership need to go.

For all you cops who have done nothing but rip on Shields and drudge up every mistake in his past. We all were young and dumb once. You start this job in the early twenties like him you are bound to make a few mistakes. I know I've made many mistakes on this job. Done things to people that I am not proud of but seemed like a good idea at the time. I haven't met a cop yet who can tell me about his perfect police career. Have you?
Lets remember we are now looking at Shields as a man in his thirties. Are you the same man that you where 10 years ago. Give the guy a break. If you look at the whole picture, he's done more good than harm with his actions. if your going to air your beef with Shields keep it to the last 3 years. That's what fair. Not what he did as a 23 year old kid. His actions in the last three years show a strong desire to protect the officer and not the politician while putting a target on back. Yes he might not always be polished but cetainly has gotten the attention of city hall.
Can you say that about anyone in FOP now? I see apathy. I see spineless people who didn't stand up for the officer who pays them too. I see people looking out for their own best interest. So if he runs to me its an easy vote.

FOP election time is coming. My suggestion is if Mike Shields name is not on the ballot, write his name in. Make a copy and forward it to him either via e-mail or snail mail. As long as he has a copy he can tally the votes. If (snicker) corruption is afoot, Mike can call them out.

There shouldn't be anything stopping you from forming your own union and, once formed with a large number of officers, filing to replace the FOP as the collective bargaining agent for the Chicago Police Department rank-and-file.
I'm not a big union guy, but you at least need someone looking out for your best interests and not management's or their own best interests. The American Airlines mechanics' union has been in a fight with another union as to who will represent the wrench twisters. I'm sure there is another police union out there other than the FOP with whom you could associate.

Exactly. Now what are WE going to do about it. We need to do something. Everyone needs to demand that only important issues be published in the newsletter. If somebody wants to read about a picnic, then mark can post that on the dumb website that never gets updated.

If Shields is being censored by the FOP why doesn't he just post his full, unaltered articles in the Pension Fund newsletter or here on the Blog? He can put right in here, unedited, what the FOP won't print. Just curious.
There are 2 sides to every story but I cannot trust Donahue. I voted for him twice and I GUARANTEE it will not happen again. I admit the 2nd time was a mistake, the first time I truly believed he was the best option. I can admit i fucked that up. As for Shields I worked with him for awhile in 018 before he left. He worked nights, was a worker(it is 018 so that doesnt take much) but was NEVER a dogass. I dont know about his families clout but knowing him and his brother I have a feeling there is clout somewhere. its hard to know who or what to believe anymore as it seems the city has suceeded in dividing us. I can only say that if the election was today I would vote for Shields over Donahue.
After reading Mark Donahue's response I would say that I am officially sick and tired of the excuses.
I would like to have a representative that takes on the difficult issues and politicians like Shields is doing right NOW for the greater good of the FOP and its members. Shields has my support, keep up the good work.

Hey, the guy is actually being sued by the City Treasurer - after speaking the truth - Chicago Tonight did a feature on it, as did the Wall Street Journal. That doesn't sound exactly self-serving, nor like a conspiracy theory. It sounds like a guy who says what he thinks and isn't afraid of consequenses.

That is when the pension went from 32 and a day to 29 and a day to max out; from 2% extra a year to 2.5% extra a year. The City should have contributed more to the pension fund, not less.
Look at the mess the State of Illinois is in. Billions in under funded and unfunded pension liabilities because the lawmakers allowed the state to skip pension payments.
Chicago must NEVER be allowed to skip pension payments, in fact, they need to pay more and so do we.
That is needed to keep the fund solvent.
Donahue is through and so is Bella. Mike Shields for FOP Prez.
As a former elected official in a suburban municipality let me tell you - you better have someone questioning pension funds and whether or not the actuaries are accurate in their forecasting for the municipality's yearly contribution.
When I reviewed ours, I found out that these idiots (YES - idiot fund managers!!) were calculating our municipality's contributions based on a 9% return from equities. NO ONE was getting a 9% return at the time (more like 5-6% at best) and I said that it would lead to a huge shortfall (where the village should have been contributing more all along). They had to re-adjust the % returns and then re-adjust what our yearly contribution was (it went up but at least we became aware of it rather than leading to a shortfall in the fund)
My advice - question ALL the "experts" because from what I saw - those who claim expertise many times are total BS.
As for your union- CPD has been pussified and so is the union.
Get new leadership. (You don't have much control over who gets to be superintendent, but you have control of who gets voted in into FOP)

I agree with the above post. This guy is very SELF SERVING....don't think for a moment the HUBERMAN thing wasn't perfectly set. It's nice to see Shields moving and ruffling some feathers.....he works for the pension board....KEEP HIM THERE...wtf..he has a background in that stuff....we dont need another HOT HEADED LOUD MOUTH copper screaming on the TV or radio about stuff he has NO clue about other than to say "We're getting screwed"....look at the big picture people!

It is called being polite and cool under fire. I don't see anyone else standing up to what is right for us. If Shields went in like a raving loon, that is what he would have been called. Instead he was polite, concise, asked the questions that needed to be asked and pressed Huberman. He was able to even sit in on the pension board meeting and when you do watch that video the only timid one i saw was Huberman. Barely speaking above a whisper. Shields put him on the hot seat, all the while doing it CLASS......Grace under fire.
You beef about Mike Shields making the news and stuff. Show me where Donahue has come out for the police. Where was he when the last three officers were shot and killed. The FOP should have been all over the news saying where are the preachers and and store from politicians with their outcry. Shileds does more by himself than the whole FOP combined.
The less than esteemed, treasurer is perhaps the most incompetent large city finance official in the US of A. Incompetent, racist, mean spirited, racist, corrupt and more dangerous to the CPD than any VL, GD, LK or skel on the streets today. Vote the petty little power tripping witch out, she has no business sitting on a pension board.....
We have a multitude of problems here. We need to get rid of the politicians that are ruining our city. We need new blood in the FOP Office...let's see who comes forward...Shields might be better off where he is at...on the Pension Board. Next our pension is something that needs to be addressed...or we will still be fucked!
