::Cough Cough:: Bullshit! ::Cough::

We can only imagine that this is part of the plea deal Shortshanks negotiated prior to hiring J-Fled as a part of the de facto Federal Consent Decree:
  • Mayor Richard Daley today defended his top cop, a onetime FBI supervisor who has been much criticized by rank-and-file police officers.

    “When the headlines glared for months and years all about police brutality and everything else about the city and look what’s going on and the police department disarray, this man came in and did the job that was necessary,” Daley said, referring to Police Supt. Jody Weis. “He’s done a very, very good job, and I’m very proud that I appointed him.”

    The defense came a day after one potential mayoral candidate, Ald. Thomas Allen, 38th, said his first act as the city’s chief executive would be to fire Weis.

    “I think our public safety crisis is pretty self apparent,” Allen said. “He polices with charts, graphs, bars and statistics. It’s a sham.”
Exactly as we've been saying for years now - along with most of our readership, who happen to be Chicago Police Officers, and who might have just a wee bit of insight into the number fudging.

And then the Tribune starts printing these whoppers and we just have to shake our heads at the amount of Kool-aid dumped by the Daley-media on the public:
  • Weis was hired by Daley nearly three years ago and tasked with cleaning up a department beset by corruption scandals. His contract expires March 1, and Weis told the Tribune he plans on staying through then.

    During his tenure, the flow of corruption news out of the department has all but halted, but morale has plummeted as Weis changed the way the department does its work.
Corruption news halted? Well sure, if you tell the media not to cover something, we guess that's "halted." But in case you were actually paying attention, you might have seen the following:
  • guns and drugs at the bartenders condo;
  • armed field invasions by Elton John fans in violation of federal rules;
  • distribution of strong-armed concert tickets to certain former feds to head off an investigation;
  • sustained Rule 14 violations;
  • domestic telephone threats and conduct unbecoming;
  • a serial sexual harasser busted down to lieutenant, then triple promoted after being booted from consideration for an Arizona police job (he also gives accused murderers advice - on tape!);
  • the continuing Tow Truck scandal;
  • another exempt promotee being the subject of an open federal investigation;
  • not one, but two drivers being promoted "meri-clout-oriously" when no definition for "merit" exists anywhere on paper...
We're sure we missed a few. Funnily enough though, all those scandals (except one) involved exempt members of the Department. You know, people with clout. And that gets overlooked.

The media and Daley continue to spout the fiction that J-Fled was brought in to rein in a Department that was out of control. This is a lie, plain and simple. Did we have a rough patch? Yes, but no worse than any other scandal that has rocked major Departments from time to time:
  • The drunk driving incidents were dealt with, severely in most of the cases;
  • Jefferson Tap was a bunch of drunk civilians with a history of suing after losing bar fights they started;
  • Abbate was an out of control drunk who was hired despite his background and spoke more to the poor judgment of the clout that eased him through the system:
  • Same thing with Callahan being allowed back despite a long history of drunken behavior, but a wife who worked in politics;
  • Cozzi was wrong for losing his temper - he has said so and so have nearly all of his defenders - and he served the penalty handed down by the courts and Police Board;
  • The SOS scandal, for all the hype, ends up being a single rogue team in an unit of connected officers, 99% of whom were unfairly tarred with the corruption brush...
All told? Probably under 25 officers involved. Maybe even less than 20. In a Department of around 10,000 (give or take a few)? That's a quarter-of-one-percent. We don't know about you, but 99.75% honest, hardworking, keeping-your-nose-clean is nothing to sneer at and damn near as far from "out of control" as you can get.

That doesn't excuse any of the misbehavior and we will delete any comment that accuses us of glossing over misconduct. Police corruption is intolerable. But to imply the Department was out of control and only J-Fled saved it from itself, while studiously ignoring the misbehavior, mischief and criminal acts of the brass and their sponsors is laughable. And the media failures to investigate any of these incidents and hold elected officials accountable for the actions of their appointees is a travesty that will not be forgotten by anyone here.

You should calculate the percentages of the clouted Bossholes who've committed infractions and/or crimes that would have had the average Blue Shirt fired and/or imprisoned. Talk about disproportionate numbers!

If the general public were privy to and believed even 5% of what we know as fact regarding the double standards on this job, they'd be outraged and demanding a complete overhaul of the CPD in an attempt to get their tax dollars worth out of their public servants.

It's just too bad that the Chicago Democratic Machine, coupled with a crooked, on-the-payroll-
media has, and continues to pull the wool over the collective eyes of a blissfully ignorant public. This segment of society has been pacified for generations by government handouts and empty promises, or are still believing that the "Change" for which they exercised their most prized God-given right will arrive some day.

Transparency and a "level playing field" don't exist, folks. Not in the White House, and certainly not within the CPD.

"...this man came in and did the job that was necessary,"

Oh yeah he did! He demoted/forced out the bosses who knew how to run the department, presided over a continually-diminishing number of police (though that blood is on Daley's hands), actually CAUSED the de-policing that has overtaken the department and run morale into the basement. (BTW, where's that Morale & Stress Survey??).

That's what was necessary?

He was Daley's (perhaps unintentional) hatchet man, nothing more.

With the exception of his handling of the Cozzi mess, I still want to believe he meant well, but as we all know, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

He was/is so damn clueless about CPD, he listened to the wrong people (many at the behest of Daley/Masters) and this shell of a police department is what the city is left with.

Daley is a Master(s) planner. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the destruction of CPD was his planned coup de grace prior to his departure.

another dead on comment from tom allen:

Ald. Tom Allen (38th), a possible mayoral contender whose Northwest Side ward is home to scores of police officers, advised Weis to dust off his resume.

“He was a non-starter from the beginning. That guy was a round peg in a square hole. Never should have hired Jody Weis. He’s an FBI guy. I’d take a Chicago Police officer any day over an FBI agent,” Allen said.

“They don’t respect him and they know he won’t back ‘em up. It was a bad choice. And we never should pay a guy $310,000 while people are taking pay cuts and we don’t have money for recycling.”

"...tasked with cleaning up a department beset by corruption scandals."

The whole city has been "beset by corruption scandals" under the Daley Dictatorship. Ridding CPD of theirs was just a way to distract people from THE REAL CORRUPTION (hired trucks, Millennium Park cost over-runs, political hiring, etc.)

Most of the corruption at CPD can be attributed to the bad behavior of a handful of officers, not a pattern of trickery and deceit that Daley has bankrupted the city with.

At the City's budget hearing on the south side Thursday, several speakers criticized Jody Weis.

One demanded he resign immediately and charge that he came in and dismantled the CPD by demoting and promoting Officers without knowing who deserved promotions or demotion.

One speaker renamed him Jody Weasel.

Only one person defended Weis as a former FBI, she declared he should be respected.

She also criticized the citizens who do not want to get involved and then blame the police and mayor for rising crime.

It looks like the. End for Weis.

J-Fed was the Mayor's fourth choice from the FBI and every FBI agent that I know that commented on him indicate that he was a jerk at the Bureau and should of never been considered. They include one current SAC and one former SAC and two supervisors. Also one former supervisor at the United States Attorneys' Office in Chicago stated that he was an out of control idiot when he worked in the Chicago office.

The reason he is here is Fat Phil Cline and his complete disregard of the disciplinary system. Cline overlooked and downplayed misconduct in order to get results and then lied to the Mayor about it.

Cline became a big boss because he sold a bill of goods to Hillard, who was our dumbest Superintendent of all time.

Hillard became Superintdent because Risley's ego could not stand seeing Rodriguez as Superintendent and material obtained by people working for him and their conclusions were leaked to the media.

We are doomed!

Got on despite problems with the backround check.
Weren't disciplined despite repeated problems.
Felt imune from their supervisors and always ended up in some cushy spot or Unit.
Were imune because discipining them was 'not a good political move'.

The same thing I have been saying almost from the get-go.

THe media did the exact same smear job to the LAPD ...exact same thing. THe national news media constantly reports the negatives then moves on without any great understanding other than the "highlights." Rush Limbaugh calls them the "drive by" media for good reason. I don't know that the LAPD has even yet recovered. One difference between them and the CPD is timing. We now have more of the internet, and we can call bullshit, or in some cases agree with the media. But it has been mostly bullshit. Nice job.

Yeah, but he should have done that in stages. When you dump experience (especially in the mass that Weis did), you should replace it with experienced people in those key positions. Weis failed to do that, and that was one of his biggest downfalls. Clearly, the people he brought in as his 'new cabinet' didn't have a clue, and all turned out to be nothing more than 'yes men,' and we all see what success THAT brought Weis, 3M and the Dept.
None.

Anyone have info on the status of this case? I know charges have been dropped. I know there were a few guilty pleas for minor charges resulting in no prison time.

What I don't remember are any stories covering the dropped cases. I figure those stories don't sell as well as the bogus arrest stories.

I guess that corruption is whatever the SunTimes says it is and when the SunTimes is silent in the issue, then the corruption problem is "solved."

If anything, the corruption and cronyism with the CPD has grown under J-Fled's watch. It's just a damn shame that the bought-off and lazy-ass media doesn't use this blog an an invaluable resource for what's really been going on in the department since J-Fled has been here. There's so many legitimate questions that could and should be asked by the media based on information off this blog, it's mind-boggling. But they won't do it, even with Daley gone, there's not nearly enough people in the media with the courage to do so, and again that's a damn shame.

I do wish to emphasize that the corruption under J-Fled's watch in my view is strictly an indictment on his mismanagement and the people he's put in place. I have great empathy for the people in the districts who have suffered because of this man's arrogance and incompetence. Not to overlook that the department has lost too many officers in the line of duty, in too short of time. But J-Fled has time to make a smart-ass remark about gold bricks. Way to have your priorities straight, J-Fled!

I've lived in Ald. Allens ward for for the whole time he's been alderman and then some. This guy is a big police supporter and is not a bullshitter by any means. And the police are still being sent to the westside. I guess that nothing has changed for you. And did he write you a check for your damage and lost items? Now that would be a stand up guy and would definitely get my vote
