New Uniform Configurations

With all this new stuff coming out (fleece, MOLLE vests, nylon web belt) and the restrictions of what you can wear with what other clothing items, might we suggest the following?
This easy to follow system of labels and cute animals permits the officer to coordinate hats (baseball, wool dress, Rocky-the-Squirrel, etc.) with exterior garments (reefer, blouse, cordura, Spiewek, fleece, sweater, etc.) and with pants (wool, 80/20, shorts, cargo, etc.)

It's a free idea for the uniform stores.

And olive drab stuff and black stuff. Makes it so hard to go to work each day with all that mixing and matching.

Can I wear the cargo pants with that? Should I wear the dicky or use a tie? What about the outer garment? Oh my, I didn't know I would become a fashionista so late in my career.

I was reminded of an old joke years ago about Blue Star Autos on south State Street. The saying was " No two parts matched". Well, it came back to mind the other day as I drove past an out door roll call in 023. Standing in a vacant lot were about 8 PO's and a supervisor. I think you know the punch line here - - "No two uniforms matched".

Unfortunately, the people making these decisions are still thinking like this:

"If it don't work like a wheel gun, it ain't no good! An dat wheel gun better be in some heavy black leather cause dats how da cowboys wore it a hundred years ago. No if dem stores what sell dis stuff wanna trow a kickback our way soze dey can put in dis new fangled gear, dats different."

When will they just leave so bad backs and foot problems go away with them?

I agree. Baseball hats, crown hats, pullover sweaters, zipup sweaters, gym shoes, tie/no tie...etc. Lets not even get into the physical appearance--beards,goatees, ponytails, braids, cornrows--and these are guys in patrol, not doing any u/c work. How about that court appearance? Hell I saw a guy in a fancy seat suit for chrissakes. Mostly though it's khakies and polos--did someone change the order? I hate to say it ladies and gents, but its little things like this that lead to bigger things. Lack of uniformity does affect discipline, which in turn plays a part in lack of morale. Ask any current or former military guy/girl that ever served. This does not relieve J-Fled from the problems he has caused, but sometimes WE are our own worst enemy. Stay safe.

Just a thought...

When the fuckery of j-fled and shortshanks is over and done with and CPD is in the process of being made whole again... There is part of us that would love to see the iconic robin-egg blue and white color scheme with the blue CPD star on the door.

Either that or a subdued blue, bluish-gray or perhaps gray that washes out into the urban landscape... From a tactical standpoint we were never fans of overly visible Police vehicles.

And toss those damn roof mounted brake lights on the marked squads! They're fucking asshole magnets & shit-bird alert systems. That's why we kept duct tape to mask the silly things... Police cars should have "vehicle may make sudden stops/change of direction, keep back 100 feet" and any encroachment should be a ticketable offense based on the officer's discretion. (how many times you wanted to bust a U-ey or some other fast & dirty maneuver on a car going the other way that has "Please Stop Me" written all over it?)

Oh yeah, and the "classic" oscillating CPD siren wail from that other place in time. Not some frilly euro-fruity "international" sound but a siren that says "get your stupid ass out of the way."

Yes. The Uniform order desperately needs going over... again!

They are all the same. At 25 yards or even 100 yards it just doesn't matter. You won't be crawling through mud or having the weapon filled with water or sand so just get the best deal you can. Really, it doesn't matter except to have another meaningless thing to argue about.

Leg holsters are not going to fly for patrol (i.e. swat only) because it is very difficult to draw your weapon from a leg holster than from a hip holster while in a vehicle in the event you have to use it.

Cars have never been robin egg blue and white. You are possibly confusing color or riot helmet and shirts with car.

I'm with you on the city going back to the star on the white door with the blue fenders. Caps logo needs to be removed from every vehicle. And then maybe, if it's not asking too much, we can be allowed to go back to being the real police.

Years ago we should have standardized on the same handgun, with the department providing it. Same weapon, everyone familiar with it, all magazines the same etc. This has advantages for obvious reasons.

fedboy brings in striker fired pistols only and then fucks even that up by allowing a basket of different pistols. Still not standardized.

Now pass out some shares of stock or some "contributions" to the police & fire committee and watch the department suddenly go with one pistol only.

I was wondering when all these "wannabe Navy SEALS" would start talking up the thigh holster. As one who has worn one in the sandbox, I can tell you that they are not the best thing to wear for normal patrol duty. They stickout causing you to catch them on things such as door, they tend to flop around a bit when running, they are almost impossible to use when seated inside a vehicle and are not really all that safe from attempted snatches. But hey, they do look cool and in todays world where perception is greater than reality they will probably be approved. The Fed's wear them so I guess that means that we too will be wearing them prior to March 1,2011. And of course they are the current rage in the suburbs and who would know more about gun battles than some suburban copper like those that were seen on Female Forces. But what do I know? I've been on the job for over thirty and have been in a few gunfights all of which have occurred when I was wearing a hip holster which, last time I checked, seems to have worked out fine for me as I'm still here. But then again I never wanted anyone to mistake me for a Special Forces soldier or a Navy SEAL. I was and remain secure and proud knowing that Im a policeman. I never felt the need to either believe or pretend that I'm anything else. We have too many guys playing Army these days. I wish they would grow up.

You people crack me up. Here is something approved - the molle vest - whicg lets you take everything but your gun off your belt and move the weight to your shoulders, and you rip on it. Then someone mentions a drop leg, which moves just the gun down and it's a lower back lifesaver. Obviously you've never worn one of these rigs before. They dont fit in the car because of the box, so you have to spin int around to the top of your thigh when you drive - and hopefully remember to spin it back when you get out in a hurry. You cant draw the thing when seated in the car, because you elbow hits the seatback well before you clear the holster. When you run, it swings all over the place, and if you tighten the straps real tight to stop that bit ove movement, the top strap ends up migrating into your balls.
These holsters are made for guys who wear the heavy body armor to get the gun outta the way. They're not made for patrol use.

For the love of God, please stop wearing the shorts!!!! Even on a good looking, in shape person they look ridiculous on duty, and let's face it: most of the people wearing them have never been good looking or in shape!

I thought I was alone in thinking these shorts look absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional! If you aren't riding a bike put some pants on and get a little respect. When we dress like we are going out to play the savages don't take us serious!

I laugh my ass off when I see some copper, especially one in his 40's or 50's wearing those shorts and "Hey Arnold" baseball cap. The only thing missing is the little propeller on the top.

And if you want a "patch" of your star on your vest, you should give back the metal one that's meant to go there.

Damn right, and I am still waiting for them to restore the white stripe piping that goes down each leg of my wool trousers.

And I can't hardly find a working call box anymore or good yellow paper to do my to-from reports.

This is good, debating which M4 style weapon is best. There are only a few companies that make the parts no matter what brand it says. Other than cosmetics they are all the same.

There are a few piston operated weapons that are slightly different, otherwise all the gas operated rifles are essentially the same. Of course if you want to pay more feel free. They will take your money.

More endless debate on which rifle with which batch of doodads will help propel a .223/5.56 round downrange any better than any other rifle with any other batch of doodads.

Just go to Shore or Ray O'Herron and lay your dough down and say "Gimme' one of those." and you will be fine. Practice using it and carrying it and loading/dropping mags etc. the training is much more important than which black stick you buy. And weapon retention. The best one is no good if you are having it pulled away from you.

There's nothing "UNIFORM" about us anymore. The mix matched bunch of stupid looking uniforms everyone is wearing now makes us look like a bunch of clowns!
The two-year wonders can't wait to go buy the most "SWAT" looking crap there is. Well, I have news for you go-getters. The uniform don't make a good police officer, the person makes the uniform!

What are you asking about? Since when can we wear boat shoes and no socks to work? Way to crack off with them random thoughts.

Tact guys wear all that stupid shit and they are allowed to. You can wear dreads and earrings on tact too. But you can wear that bullshit on the watch stud. Sorry but the rules don't change because you want ropes in your hair.

P. S. All white folk are not Irish.

Seriously, DROP LEG HOLSTER? Now, this idea's gotta be the one who called themselves " Englewood Rangers, Austin Rangers, or wait, BELMONT BERET. You guys gotta grow the fuck up. If you are a Military veteran, then you should know that this Department is not even close to being a para military organization. And for those of you who haven't been in the military and not served the country, respect those who are and were Special Forces and stop being a WANNABE..

Ok let me guess your on the SWAT team or better yet you train them. Please tell what is your real time high speed low drag tails??? Please there are only about 5 guys in that whole unit with real time down range or OJT. So please keep your BS post to yourself. If a drop leg will help officers so be it. We should be allowed one weapon type anyway. Glock, Smith or whatever pick one and one only.

Our uniforms are a joke. We have so many uniforms variations it isn't funny. "You can't wear this unless you wear this." Enough already. Lets keep 1 uniform standard, not 7. No wonder why other departments think we are such a joke.

Here's why this wont work: None of you stubborn, tight walleted people will give up your old shit for new shit. The fleece is s great jacket, and the three season is a good winter jacket. So, you want to get some uniformity back? Call the FOP and tell them to let 35th st know that ALL OTHER jackets can be gotten rid of. Bit that wont happen, because people will bitch that they need to get a new jacket - despite out uni allowance. What makes more sense: bring in new stuff while getting rid of the old stuff, or neve getting new stuff because we have all the old stuff?

There is better shit than what we have now - I see it in stores all the time. But we'll never get it cause we can never get rid of the old stuff that my dad word 15 years ago.
