Get a load of what "Human Resources" thinks we're all about. Evidently, we've been a bunch of in-bred ignorant white cops for years now and no one told us:
- "We're looking to have a diverse police force, and that includes culturally ... racially, ethnically, lifestyle, all of that," said Tracey Ladner, the Chicago police's director of human resources, whose office is tasked with heading up recruiting efforts.
Ladner's team not only wants to change the perception of what a police officer does, they also want to mold the image of what a Chicago cop looks like.
Gone would be the stereotype of the rough-and-tumble white cop with basic education and strained interactions with minorities, replaced with a more tech-savvy, multilingual person of any race, religion or sexual orientation.
"We want people who are able to reach out to the community that they serve and come up with solutions," Ladner said. "And the solution isn't always arresting people."
So all that stuff we've been hearing for twenty years now about how Chicago cops are the best educated police force in city history, that Chicago ethnic and minority groups are well represented in the ranks of the Department, about how computers are changing the way we do police work, and all that "diversity training" we had to sit through....it was all bullshit? We're just a step away from Theophilus Conner, fire hoses and attack dogs?

The pussification of a police department. They have been slowly getting rid of the older generation of police officers in order to stop the 'real' police from teaching a younger generation of how to police. This will and is killing our police department. This also will get a lot of people hurt or killed.
I have had a very fortunate career of working with and learning from old timers that really understood what it was like to be the police. Retirements along with slow hiring will destroy the years of knowledge withing the department. The knowledge that will not get passed down to the younger generation of police. The actions by the city are going to hurt.
This Ladner goof needs to open her eyes and look around. The department has all types of coppers now and has for quite some time. Gay, lesbian, women that became men, black, white, hispanic asian, weak, strong, short, tall, fat, small, we got it all. These bosses think they are so smart, but in the end they aren't coming up with anything new. I just hope the CPD doesn't become any weaker than it already is.

To the guy in the academy who wants to ''give back'' to the community by joining SWAT or becoming a detective. Good luck. Hopefully you have some type of clout, because if you don't the chances of this happening are EXTREMELY slim. My advice would be to start applying to other law enforcement jobs now. Another option is to take the LSAT, let the city pay for a law degree, and then get out. Don't drink too much of the coolaid the clout-heavy (don't doubt it) instructors are passing out. You already made one large mistake. Accepting this bullshit position. Don't make another mistake thinking that education, honesty, and a strong work ethic will get you anywhere on this job. It will not. Get out quickly or get a free education from the city. Once again, if you are one of the clouted ones, welcome aboard sir/maam. Look forward to working underneath you.

Interesting, does Ladner know the city is cashing fat checks from the producers of this new cop show, "The Chicago Code?" This has been approved by the city council and all the way down the chain (Legal) to use our "property." This means the show can simulate the cars we use, our lanquage on the radio, police uniforms, etc. And how do they promote the show on the TV promos? They show us using coarse language, striking non assailants, and high speed; accident causing pursuits. The best footage was an example of all the in-fighting within the department and how corupt things are in city hall. So Tracey wants to recruit the fuzzy police but they have no problems cashing checks and showing the country the REAL police.
Be careful what you wish for Chicago, because the way things are heading The Cop of tomorrow will be a bunch of nerd cops like the ones in Demolition Man. Later they'll take our guns away and supply us with glow rods cause guns will be deamed too scary.

The era of being the real police has come and gone. I'm proud to have been a part of it from the late 70's until just a few years ago. I could have stayed another 10 years before forced retirement, but for what?
When I left, part of the reason was because we were no longer allowed to be the police the way that I had been trained. The politicians, (Daley et al), decided we had to be a bunch of pussies in order for them to keep their jobs and get the votes from the criminal element of the city.

The crime fighting memories I have from Cabrini in it's heyday, Fort Forgotten (015), and from Little Village and it's scarier neighbors north of Cermak Road, (010), are all reminders of why I couldn't possibly lower myself to becoming a simple crime secretary who makes house calls. Chicago needs to hire two depts. Chicago is a rough-and-tumble city with REAL crime occurring everyday. Getting shot at is a grim reality for any police officer (or citizen for that matter) riding in the streets.
This is NOT the time to pussify the CPD. This is the time to recruit Iraq or Afghanistan War veterans who know how to shoot, take orders and kick ass.
I cannot understand any police officer not being able to shoot and more importantly, any commander running the other way from shots fired. Am I supposed to feel safe when first responders are first-to-flee-the-scene?
Now is the time to wholesale cut most of the exempt staff and replace them with (military) officers with real and demonstrated leadership abilities.

Of all the people that she could use as an example of what a police officer should be, one of the many officers who I will bet in the last 72 hours(time frame immaterial), saved a life, stopped a crime in progress, caught a rapist or murderer, found a lost kid, talked a suicide off of a ledge, held someone's hand at an accident scene, respectfully wrote a report regarding the death of a loved one, recovered a gun, stopped a drunk driver or any one of the countless things that good police officers (regardless of skin color, sexual orientation or religious belief)do every day she uses a guy who may be a computer whiz but whose work shows no results at all, at least as far as I can see.
If the Department that I loved so much prior to retirement needs a computer program to tell it that there will be shootings in Englewood, Pullman and Humboldt Park, then we as a city are in much deeper shit than any citizen could believe.

in some cases they are, not just for "diversity" but also for language skills. Polish-American cops are recruited in Ireland and other placed where they have imported a lot of Polish labor. Countries that have had sanctuary policies for immigrants, particularly Islamic immigrants have to get Islamic cops.
Read about what has been going on with foreign immigrants in Germany, France, Italy and elsewhere in Europe. The new immigrants settle, get political power and want their own on the police departments.

Most of us want the same thing, hence some of the postings on this blog. But the powers that be, specifically Judy Weis and Tracy Ladner are standing in our way. If you doubt me, ask Bill Cozzi.
The fact of the matter is that in the black community, the white officer is more often trusted than the black officer, not only by the citizen but by the criminal. I've encountered it. Let's hear from the revolver police and the retired guys on this: how many times did you hear "Oh good I told the operator to send me the real po-leece." Or hear the arrestees say to each other while waiting for transport "man joe, I hope we going with the white po-leece" No offense intended to our black brothers and sisters in blue, it just goes to show you that they don't have it any easier when it comes to dealing with the black community either. As for diversifying the ranks beyond black and white, yes it is important to have people of the same culture and language etc. However, many of these people come from parts of the world where the police are so corrupt and brutal, that they perceive they will get better treatment from a white officer than of one of their own culture. There is a reason why there are alot of white Irish guys on this job, most of us are good at it. Most of us have that "gift of the gab" and can talk to anyone at anytime about anything. Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater. So, lets cut the horseshit and let the police be the police and reduce crime that way, not just continue to use smoke and mirrors to convince people that something else is the white mans fault in this world.
But still a young white copper will chase some little turd with a gun through the ghetto today and risk their life. I wish I could give my experiences to them. I am a former "working" policeman and I'm not gonna get on here and preach about morale and everybody is out to get me, but listen, at some point you need to get your head out of your ass and STOP. I go to work everyday and the lack of respect that the system has handed the public to give us is for real, we are the last line of safety and security from criminals and soon-to-be-criminals and in todays society they seem not to worried! I say let the politicians,reverends,and news media respond to calls and then call us if they can't fix a problem with "THE CRIMINALS OF TODAY". The scary thing is that we have not even reached rock bottom yet!
It's the left's attack on the American male. They have spent years using the education system to change little boys into little girls. Now they want women police officers, even if they look like a man.
If you are a white, fairly well educated, Catholic HS graduate, then you do not want this job for anything more than a way to use it's tuition reimbursement to get another job.
This is a good job, at least today. But, pay, pension, vacation, and overtime are the only factors that make this otherwise unbearable job bearable. There is absolutely nothing else rewarding about this job. Frankly, after many years, I have realized this job is a waste of time, but my financial future locks me in.
This job has gotten progressively worse every year and in the last five years we've been in a free fall. I don't want to even imagine what this job will be like in another 20 years.

I am proud of our police officers and I have found them to be, on the whole, well-trained and responsive. Most of the cops I've encountered are totally invested in this city and ALL of them are willing to put their lives on the line every day. White, black, male, female, whatever.
Her statement is not only insulting to the police, but to the citizens of Chicago--we are apparently too dumb to produce and recruit capable police officers. Yes, there are some people who should not be "on the job"--as in every profession. But I think they are called to account and dealt with quickly.

The best cop I knew was an older black guy who grew up near Bronzeville. The worst cop I knew was an older black guy who grew up nearby; although, in fairness there is plenty of competition for the worst cop category. And please don't tell me about the discrimination of the past. My family, both sides, came here after the turn of the 20th Century. They never owned slaves or discriminated against anybody. My father and his brothers and sister grew up during the Depression. My father spoke no English when he started school but learned how to speak this language without special programs. He spoke two languages fluently his whole life. They didn't teach us their native language because they wanted us to be Americans. My father served in the Navy during World War II, (Seebees)he worked hard his whole life, having to leave school after sophmore year of High School to support his younger siblings. Nobody ever gave him anything. Was he perfect, far from it. He was a tough man who in his youth would fight at the drop of a hat and sometimes drank too much. He would kick our asses when we got out of line, but he never laid a hand on my mother. One of his brothers is buried in a Military Cemetary in Belgum, killed during the Battle of the Bulge. When the old neighborhood changed racially, one of my other uncles, and his family (wife and only child) decided to stay because they truly believed in the goodness of everyone. That ended when my cousin was shot and killed during a robbery after he gave the M/1 offender his money. Offender was never found. My uncle was never the same after that. Was that a hate crime? So don't try to lay that guilt trip on me. Point is not all of us whites are connected or the beneficiaries of supposed "white provlige". Stories like this are more commom than not. So get off your ass, go to school, loose the false sense of entitlement and get to work.

Where do I start? When I got into law enforcement in 1973, I was one of the tech-savvy, college educated geeks. But I also learned from and respected the street-smart guys who knew how to read jewelry to know it was a King. Diversity means a police force of all kinds of backgrounds and talents, not a cookie-cutter rendition of stereotypes. A well-managed department knows where and when to employ the talent available to it. If everyone is the same bland middle-of-the road techie nobody benefits. What qualifications does Tracy Ladner have that makes her able to define what traits and duties a police officer on the Chicago Police Officer needs to possess and perform?

When I call the police I want the "White boys" to respond not some "Merit boy" who is really to stupid to do the job. And if he isn't so stupid how come he has to be a "Merit boy"?
I work for a 'tech company'.
Our department works pretty closely with the guys who develop the algorithmic search infrastructure.
It is pretty fascinating stuff, albeit a bit geeky. The reason search logic works while this "Predictive Analysis" does not (nor will it ever) is because you cannot develop correlatives between random events and anything else.
For example, if you search "Police Blog From Chicago", using the semantic meaning of the data contained in the website text, it's pretty easy to figure out what you're looking for and to deliver an accurate result.
Now, lets say you just randomly banged your fists into different regions of the keyboard- three bangs, top left... two bangs, top right... The resultant mish-mash of letters and numbers have no interrelated meaning, thus, cannot be used to interpret anything as it relates to anything else.
While there can be themes to crime, AI (artificial intelligence) cannot be used to successfully predict a human behavior, since human behavior results from things that cannot be quantified and resolved into numbers, then into an automated logic-sort.
Even if the predictive analysis unit had wholly comprehensive data (every name, every place, every date, every associated party, every little fragment of insignificant data like eye color, average income, shoe size...) they still couldn't predict unrelated random events with any degree of repeatability no more than flipping a coin can accurately predict who will win the Super Bowl.
I don't know how many datapoints their algo addresses, but even if it were 1,000,000 (it's probably more like 10 or 15), it still wouldn't work.
I understand blog comments have to be limited for space, but I could go on forever about this. Predictive Analysis is beyond stupid.

I've been around for over twenty years and spent most of that time in patrol on the South end of the City. In that time, I'd like to think I've learned some things along the way and one of them is this...when almost anyone calls US for help, if you extend yourself in a professional manner and exhaust what resources we have at our disposal, the citizen could care less if your black, white, brown, yellow or blue with orange hair.
And yes Tracey, despite possessing a clear understanding of racial, sexual or any other issues accross most lines, people sometimes still go to jail. It's part of what we do and it is required of US as part of OUR job. Now until you have the authority to throw out or ignore the applicable sections
of the legal process and/or rewrite countless Department directives directing US how we do OUR job, get lost and let US get back to work.

Contrary to what Ladner thinks, crime has not changed much in over 2,000 years. People have been beating other people up, breaking into their houses and stealing their stuff, raping women, selling illegal substances, using a weapon to take other people's stuff, killing them for some trivial reason, etc.
Yeah we have identity theft and some other tech crimes. But most people don't have that problem. They are worried about someone hitting them and taking their stuff.
About 20 years ago, the FBI did a profile of officers that were considered ideally suited to "Community Service." They saw them selves as "problem solvers" "consensus builder" and "community team players" and generally friendly types. Officer say themselves as members of the community, not apart from it. They believed that they could talk out anything.
The bad part of the article was the final conclusion: The officers that fit that easy going profile also matched the profile of officers most likely to be murdered in the line of duty.
We all know that no every person we deal with is POS. But never forget that that person may be just around the corner and if you cannot "shift gears" and deal with him on that level, you are going to get hurt.
As a black (not a po), I have nothing against white cops, but, having to give a "statement" after a crime at my job, the white Officer kept referring to someone as "them" and "they are all alike" and "she might be just like all of the rest of them."
The Officer was obviously stressed out about something so I guessed the "them" he kept referring to was "liberals" what do you think?
Maybe this is why white cops are not trusted in minority neighborhoods.
Finally, Studies show blacks are more often charged with felonies for crimes that whites are charged with as misdemeanors, the study did not list the ethnic identity of the arresting officers.

Where do I start? When I got into law enforcement in 1973, I was one of the tech-savvy, college educated geeks. But I also learned from and respected the street-smart guys who knew how to read jewelry to know it was a King. Diversity means a police force of all kinds of backgrounds and talents, not a cookie-cutter rendition of stereotypes. A well-managed department knows where and when to employ the talent available to it. If everyone is the same bland middle-of-the road techie nobody benefits. I wouldn't want a narc trying to do AI reconstruction or a computer geek as a gang control officer. You need all types of talent, not a neutered ineffective collection of wimps afraid to do what needs to be done.

I'm an African American Police Officer and I actually find her remarks offensive. Black officers such as myself have ,pardon the expression, put a few boots up a few asses when necessary. We're the POLICE , that's what we do.We're also HUMAN BEINGS and when we have to show compassion or lend a helping hand we do that as well. If our Department is further headed in this ultra-liberal direction , God help us.
