Four-and-Two for Everyone

FOP says the City prevailed in their decision to implement the Four & Two schedule across the Department, meaning 005, 008, 013 and 020 will be adjusting before the First Police Period next year. Details forthcoming. Check the FOP link in the right hand side for info in their "Current Updates" section.

It sure seems we lose a lot at arbitration wonder how come? Who is sleeping with who? More and more we wonder why Donahue has that big lobbing job lined up wonder who his clout is? Why is Mike Shields being told not to run for FOP president as Bella gives him the boots? Just wondering!!

Not sure about the ten hour day crew, but for you 6/3 people, you will really enjoy the 4/2 schedule. Working 6 days in a row is messed up. Even if it was 6 on and 4 off, I would rather do the 4/2.

off topic: isn't it interesting that over 30 Chicago Police Officers, including, God Rest Their Souls, the fallen of the current year, along with numerous Cook County Suburban Dept. offiers were honored with the Award of Valor and Merit and there was zero media coverage.(NOT SURPRISING). J-Fled was ther in a suit, short as ever, looking like a middle aged "Beavis" or an alien as my wife put it. It was a pretty funny photo though, seeing him try to peel through the tall bodies in front of him, because no one let him stand in between them. Truly a priceless moment. Even though this was just a ceremonious pat on the ass for most of us, a mere mention in the local media was appropriate because of the our fallen officers honored posthumously. Once again it shows how little local media and media in general thinks of us, the soldiers at home who do battle with evil on a daily basis. GOD BLESS ALL MY BROTHERS......STAY SAFE...........

Off Topic. I went into the Commanders office in 014Th to ask One of the Secretaries about the Watch Selections and Furloughs since I'm going on Furlough soon. Well it was clear to me that the officer sitting directly outside of the Commanders office didn't have a clue, so I went to Secretary #2 who gave me the information I was seeking. So let me get this straight the Commander has a personal assistant to driver her around and gopher things, but doesn't know her job, and a Secretary. This is so sad it's almost funny. "huh"

Get a load of this. POD Missions to be run 24 hours a day in 011. Various Beat Cars are to be held down in two hour increments to monitor the PODS. Best part? POD room is open to the public to come and sit down with officers!! They can "learn" to use and watch the POD. Second best part? They kicked the Review Office & people out of that room to accommodate this latest brainfart. Sounds like another appeasement of the phony-ass reverends on Henny Penny's part. And talk about ANOTHER waste of manpower, especially with how short we are.

P.S. - The fat, greasy bastard from the 5th floor is scheduled to visit 011 sometime today to view this latest "innovation".

I have only been in the 6-3 schedule for just over a year now, and I have to say it was a great schedule. I am able to enjoy 3 days in a row with my wife and my 7 month old daughter. When we want to go away for a few days, I had 3 days to enjoy! Heck, if I burned 1 day of comp-time I had a 4 day weekend!
I have to give the 4-2 a chance before I can say I do or do not like it, but I am extremely unnerved in the way our wonderful union went about handling this issue. I was quite disheartened when I saw union representatives at our roll calls in the 013th district explaining how the 4-2 schedule would work and could be a benefit to us. I would have been ok with this if they would have done this on the day of the arbitrators ruling. But our pitiful and quite useless union (as I have come to realize) visited 013 2 weeks ago to talk about the 4-2 schedule. What was the point of even fighting for these schedules!
Let all remember that the FOP elections are just around the corner!

Thank God this is nothing more than an idiotic "flash in the pan" and won't outlast the month.

"Bring Your Kid To Work Day" doesn't mean you sit him down and let him have a try at running the $650 million rolling mill...

Chicago Public Library once tried this; I simply refused to deal with the 12-year-old behind the counter. "You are not an employee of the library. I am not handing you my confidential information. You are also in violation of federal child labor laws."

I got an adult librarian -- real fast, too.

Never saw that stunt again.

Actually, it's an 8.5 day, (well, all depending on your check off sgt). As for the swiping in and out, yep it's coming! No more early outs. Your pay check will be based on your swipe in and out times. A 15 min leeway will be given on both ends, meaning you will have up to a quarter after and a quarter to the hour to swipe. Anytime after that, you better have a slip in.

You hit the nail right on the head. A few years back the City went through an audit in order to renew it's bond rating. The accountants found that nobody ever counted our time on the books in the red, which they are required to do. Comp time is considered a debit in case employees want to sell back those hours. At the time the City was violating federal labor law by not allowing officers to do so. The bond rating dropped. They even approached some officers with huge comp time and told them to start checking the money box. They soon allowed supervisors to sell back hours.

Who ever came up with the idea of four & two's was a genius. Our over worked troops went for it right away. And the city keeps chipping away at the comp time. Win-Win. Who does the math anyway?

Just remember. If this administration is offering you something, it's not for your benefit.

Yeah we all used to do that. 10 hour days are way better than the 4 and 2. Wish we could all have that schedule. Glad you feel soooo good asshat

To those praising the 4 & 2, I have no doubt that you like it when compared to the 6 & 2, but the 10 hour days are great. You have so much time away from the B.S. at work. It was great being able to go places on the 4 day weekends without the need to burn time (burn 40 hours (or 4 pdays) in the middle of your weekends and you have 12 days off). As far as everyone being on the same schedule, why? What one district does with their schedule has nothing to do with what another one does. It obviously isnt a problem to have units doing different schedules (are the people at 35th st going to the 4 & 2? TRU? MSF?). What was the problem with having options? The city rarely takes a common sense approach to how they treat their employees, and common sense says that with a department as large as ours, one schedule will not fit everyone. Having the options would have been nice. But that actually shows a concern for your employees.... The last 2 years with 10 hour days has been pretty stress free.. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

It makes sense for EVERYONE on the Department to be on the 4 and 2 schedule.. 8 hr. days.
What about the swipe in-swipe out, Department wide, coming Jan. 1st ? Is it true ?

11/10/2010 10:41:00 AM

If you want to "enjoy" those three and four day weekends put in your par form to go to TRU or MSF, otherwise shut your mouth and stop complaining. The biggest problem with this department is everyone is always worried about what everyone else is doing. If you are not in those units how much does there work schedule affect you....ZERO. Start worrying about yourself.

The 4-2 schedule sucks. I have 17yrs on the job and used to keep a lot of hours on the books. Since the switch, I've burned more time this year than I did in 3yrs combined. With the 4-2 schedule you lose the 3 day weekends. Granted, they came around every 6th & 7th week, but they still existed. With the old schedule if you wanted a 4 day weekend you only burned 8hrs. Now you'll burn 17hrs for a four day weekend. It sucks big time. Also, if you use a BFD you'll burn an extra half hour of your time per day. I like long stretches away from the job and the city. I hardly ever left the city this year because of having only 2 days off. This 4-2 WILL eat up your comp-time.

I said this when it started, the reason the city went with it is because it worked for them; they knew we would burn through our comp time to have more time off, and thus, take more time instead of money for overtime. I for one would have loved the the 6 and 3, same schedule three off every week with four on the weekends. 4 and 2 isn't bad but I never take extra time, i'm not gonna blow through time as the city would like..
MSF and TRU will stay on 10 hour days, it's the only reason most stay in those units, if they make them switch they will most surely bail.

You sure can't please everyone. This guy got that heavy gold brick and has trouble lifting it.

The 4 & 2 means 18 extra paid days off a year that weren't there before. Can you count? 18 extra days off. You would rather work 18 more days a year to get those 8 weekends a year? That is insane.

To me the 4 & 2 schedule means work fewer days a year total and fewer days in a row till my days off.

It is the best thing to happen in my 25 years. The best, bar none.

Learn to add.

Again, 18 extra days off a year. How does the city make out? If you get time on the books you will eventually either use them or get paid for them. How is the city "making out like bandits?" By you using your time to take days off that you want and request and ask for?

I feel we picked their pocket cleanly.

11/10/2010 08:21:00 AM

When the city & FOP agreed on alternate work schedules they also agreed to go to arbitration in case an agreeable solution could not be worked out. That was part of the agreement. Possible arbitration.

When the rest of the city all got the 4-2 schedule the city wanted the whole city to go to the 4-2 and quit the 10 hour day and 6-3. FOP argued for those units to keep those schedules since the majority of officers said they wanted to keep those hours.

Ultimately the City (management) said they wanted all districts etc. to be on the same work schedule. They are management after all. If I got the schedule I wanted I would be working 2 days and off 6 and I am pissed at FOP I didn't get it. Elections coming, someone will pay that I didn't get the 2 day work week.

Anyway, in keeping with the agreement the FOP pushed the work schedule to arbitration for those districts etc. not already in the 4-2. It was assumed the City would prevail on this and they did. Not unexpected.

Or did anyone really think management would give up all rights to set schedules for employees?

In my humble and unimportant opinion, the 4-2 schedule is the best thing to happen in my career. The best. The bottom line is fewer total days worked each year. Working fewer days is better. Seems simple to me.

the 4/2 is really no better for people working the 1st watch. You gotta have some time to "charge your batteries", and 2 days just don't cut it. Might be great on 2nd & 3rd watch, but not so much on 1st!

11/10/2010 08:51:00 AM

Simple and obvious solution: Get off 1st Watch.

here is how. you dont work 18 days less, you only work 6hrs less per year(2074hrs to 2080hrs). every bfd u use .5hrs(5 per yer =2.5 hrs u burn per year. say u do this for 10 yrs (thats 25 hrs off the books) now say there is 10,000 coppers, thats 250,000 wiped away.and now with no 3 day weekend, every time u want one u burn more time. been on the 4 and 2 for 2 yrs and my comp time is starting to shrink.

Your wrong software is out dated already. The city never catches up and then its to late

I thought it was 1993 but no matter.

I would take the nonsense and lunacy of then over the insanity and absurdity of today any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I stopped rotating watches when I figured out how to become a 3rd Watch dog. Remember them? You had to produce to rotate. Slow down and they stuck you on straight third watch. That was perfectly OK with me. Different car and partner every day. Expectations were low and they were met. One mover and a couple of parkers a day. Occasional arrest and provide backup. That was it. And then came the scourge of CAPS...

I agree with you, but my original reference about nonsense and lunacy was focused only on the act of rotating backwards. I was not commenting on then versus now in the broader sense.

Had they simply changed to rotating forwards, people would have been happier and the impact to the culture would have been much less detrimental. IMHO, implementing straight shifts ruined the job by creating a totally different culture, which led to the creation and subsequent nurturing of the internal conditions we have suffered since.

I know time marches on, but some things simply tweeked are better for overall conditions than if they are completely eliminated.
