Quinn's Mandate?

At first, we thought he and Huberman were going to make some announcement. Then we realized he actually believes he has carte blanche to really stick it to voters:
  • Gov. Pat Quinn may have won the governor's race by the narrowest margin in nearly three decades, but he's not letting that stop him from claiming he now has a "mandate" from voters to raise the state income tax for schools.

"I think our message of investing in education was supported by the people," Quinn told the Tribune. "I think that is a really strong mandate that I got. I know from the campaign, people made that pretty clear to me, and I think the election returns said the same thing."
Really? You win by the smallest margin in history, under 25,000 votes, and suddenly, you can raise taxes? Has this softball even noticed Illinois' unemployment rate - it's higher than the national average. Businesses continue to flee our state and population can't be far behind. The budget deficit is something like $15 billion dollars and spending is out of control.

Talk about getting exactly the wrong message from voters. Combine this with the property tax bills going out shortly that were purposely held back by the democrats and you can truly marvel at the ignorant voters who put this twit in charge for another 4 years.

Maybe that "governor recall mechanism" just passed on the ballot will be getting a workout shortly. We can only hope.

I still think schenanagins (sp) were played.

"Temporary surcharge" No such thing at temporary with the lefties. Call it what it is,,,,a fucking tax hike and the POSs down in Springfield just can't wait to whip it on us.

I only give Quinn props for his supporting of our home state troops.

Quinn has been a pain in the ass for his entire public career.

Whatever SCC. Looks like Quinn pulled a page from the republican post election playbook. For instance, polls show that Americans are almost perfectly split on healthcare or ''Obamacare'' yet republicans tout the results of the election as a repudiation of all of Obama's policies. Unfortunately Quinn won. He can say whatever the fuck he wants, no matter how insane. Just like the republicans. - Discouraged moderate.

All of you coppers and firemen who voted for Quinn check this out with your pension board.................................................................

If Quinn is elected, he wantes to add a 4% income tax to our pension. Currently Illinois does not tax our pensions,.. we have zero.

They want to reduce cost of living to 1/2 of the CPI and reduce the surviving spouse benefits for all current and all future retirees

Quinn said from day one he would raise taxes. It was the NON-taxpayers whose votes put him over the top... them and all the other idiots who voted for him.

Brady's plan was less government and fewer giveaway programs... we know who didn't want to see that happen.

As a retiree, trust me when I tell you that every dollar of your pension is important to you, and Quinn coming after 4% of it (in addition to all of the other economic problems already out there), could possibly send some retired coppers in search of employment.

These damn pols think their mandate is to just keep spending and spending the publics' money. Just once, I'd like to see a 'forensic audit' of the budgets of the City, County, State, the CTA the CPS, the CPD, the Tollway Authority, the Pier Exposition Authority, the Water Reclamation District, the County Assessors' office and the assessed property taxes of the county etc, etc, etc!

Just like I'm sure the CPD could eliminate MILLION$ in wasted salaries and spending, it can be done throughout government. I am soooo tired of these jags figuring all they have to do is get it from Joe Taxpayer instead of gutting their own bureaucracies! How the f*ck can ANY taxpayer vote to keep these people in office? I just don't understand it!

Pat Quinn Has Scott Lee Cohen To Thank For Survival In Governor's Race

"The clear difference in the race is Scott Lee Cohen, who took 50,000 Cook votes.

"The numbers make good sense in context. Cook is a heavily Democratic area, but the two Democratic candidates were both quite unpopular. Many voters probably wanted to file a protest vote against Quinn and Giannoulias.

"In the Senate race, they may have found the Green and Libertarians too out-there to vote for, and gone with Republican Kirk. But in the governor's race, Cohen had spent millions of his own money -- primarily in Chicago -- portraying himself as a political outsider who was fighting for jobs.

"In so doing, he probably took a good deal of the protest vote from Brady. Those 30,000 votes that Kirk got and Brady didn't would have clearly made the difference in the Governor's race."

How ironic that the uneducated and under-educated masses that voted for him will be the same ones to reap the benefits of new schools, additional educational resources and various other special programs...things 95% of them will never even use.

You know the kind...those that never made it through high school themselves, but go on to have 6 or 7 kids of their own that will rarely set foot in a classroom. These same "people" that get paid to babysit their own kids in addition to living off the taxpayer's teat via subsidized housing, discounted utilities, free health care and a monthly stipend for food will account for the lion's share of those who'll potentially benefit from tax hikes directed towards the school system.

In a nutshell, Quinn is saying he plans on maintaining the current system of rewards for the least deserving non-contributors while the working stiff gets it pounded balls-deep and dry.

And kudos on your sneaky thread title, SCC...your reference to LubeYerMan being Quinn's "Man Date" almost escaped me. However, once discovered, I was inspired to throw in my own carnal reference in the proceeding paragraph.

NO WAY. You really think Brady would have gotten enough of the Cook county vote to win? Not a chance in hell. Anyone who voted for Cohen would have been a vote for Quinn. It was downstate that screwed Illinois again. Cook county can't elect a Governor by itself, it was the unions and liberals that did this again. I knew after Blago got re-elected this state went full libtard. Look, Quinn says blatantly that he is going to raise your income taxes and Brady says he won't. It's plain and simple who put Quinn in the victors column, those who do not pay taxes, those beholden to the Democratic party, and Liberals who only vote one way. Any downstate vote that went for Quinn was a stab in the back. I'm totally surprised that Kirk won though. I don't like Kirk at all but there wasn't much of a choice here. I second the thought that only those who voted for Quinn should have their taxes raised, after all it's the Democrats that put us in this financial hole. Do not be tricked into believing that Quinn will really run things. He can release a few prisoners or hire and fire some underlings but any real legislation has to go through the Illinois House and Senate and that is the province of Madigan and Cullerton.

I'll tell you what was an important key to this race: Bill Brady's honesty, it really screwed him in the end. Bill Brady was for rolling the minimum wage back, that didn't hurt him because no one making minimum wage was going to vote for him anyway. Bill Brady was going to cut spending, that didn't hurt him because those that don't want spending cut aren't paying taxes anyway and wern't going to vote for him. Bill Brady is pro-life and that is why he lost. I am also pro-life but I am not naive enough to think that any elected official will be able to overturn Roe v. Wade no matter how important it is to them. However many voters are naive enough to think that way. The most damage to pro-choicers by Brady would have been some cut funding, which he was going to cut funding across the board anyway to keep the state afloat financially. He didn't get enough votes up in N.E. Illinois to win, I bet he got very few female votes up here. All of us that work for a living are going to get raked over the coals for the next four years. If a Republican can't win next election the state is forever doomed and look for serious talk of the southern part of the state looking to secede.

There has been some rumors that the Cook County tax assessor will propose a new method of calculating property taxes and it will not be totally based on the property values. The political class does not want to reduce property taxes now that our home values are in the tank. This new method of calculating taxes is one reason that the tax bills will be coming late. They are not going down. I just do not buy Quinn and his higher state income tax for education. I think the answer is a new way of doing business for the schools. Way too much of our tax base goes for schools at this point: 2/3 of the property tax, a large portion of the state income tax, the lottery. The schools just do not hold the line on spending and the teachers think the schools are there for their benefit. Quin also wants to tax pensions and reduce the widows benefits in our pension. The fun is just starting.

There is a movement to raise the retirement age to 55 and increase contributions of the working coppers and to reduce widows benefits. However, Daley stated that he will go to Springfield after the election to introduce legislation for a two tier system.

It's the mass media brain washing misuse of the word 'entitlement'.

Some tax financed/subsidized 'benefits' are earned benefits and some tax financed/subsidized 'benefits' are not.

Those benefits that are NOT earned are NOT 'entitlements', they are handouts, charity, mooch swag, beggar booty, etc., compelled working class contributions to the growing mass of freebie addicts.

In a nation once populated by a majority of 'little red hens', working diligently to 'bake the bread', it's ironic that we, the working people, have allowed the 'not I!' sloths of society to determine the outcomes of our representative government elections.

How much longer will the honest, working majority of Americans tolerate this gross misuse/abuse of our inherent sense of Christian charity?

Remember the old saying, if you want good government, you've got
to pay for it. But as we all know
here in Madiganizan (Illinois),
when it comes to honest/decent
government you don't always get
what you pay for.
And the voters saw the dishonesty
and lies but they still went ahead
and returned these bozo to office.
And the main one that has me scratching my head in amazement is
hiw they elected Joe Berrios as
Assessor with all of his conflicts
of interests. When the taxes reach
beyond our ability to pay, maybe
The Madigan/Quinn will distribute
more "kool-aid" and "hopium" to help ease the pain, of course there
will be a small fee.
Stay on the case SCC. You are doing

part 2:
Quinn claims he needs a tax increase for education.
Something is very wrong with that
picture. The Illinois Lottery was
supposed to be for education.
Property taxes were supposed to
fund education. look at your tax
bill breakdown. The Board of
Education is at the very top taking
the biggest bite. The State contributes a little.
Where is the frigging money going ?
Especially with the Mayor closing
schools and firing teachers, and
some of the schools turning out
" defective products . "
And don't count on that so-called
re-call amendment to stop the fun
and games. The Springfield Combine
will find a work-around if and when
necessary to protect them and theirs. This has been going-on since Stratton was Governor and it
won't change soon because it seems
when the opportunity for change
presents itself in any form, the
voters opt for the same players and
the status quo. And then bi*ch about it.

We know you probably wanted to hug him, ruffle his hair and tell him to stop his nonsense, but the fact is, the war was necessary, legal and approved by the elected leaders of the House and Senate.

Second, who has controlled the House and Senate for the past few years? Oh yeah, the dems. And the dems are the ones raising the taxes in the middle of a recession, not the republicans. In fact, the democrats wanted to extend the tax cuts before the election in a cynical ploy to buy more votes, then let them expire anyway. The fact remains that we personally keep more of our paychecks under republicans, not dems. If you're so eager to pay more in taxes, by all means mail in a contribution.

You certainly don't ascribe to any republican ethos we recognize with your nonsense, so your moniker is a blatant falsehood. We read your BS, but it so full of lies and untruths as to be borderline insanity.

Asshat.

I just received an e-mail that allegedly came from Mike Shields of the pension board. He claims that a house bill was put it, but does not appear to be going anywhere, this bill would include the CPD into pension reforms. He states everything is just rumor at this point, including taxing our pensions. There is a movement to raise the retirement age to 55 and increase contributions of the working coppers and to reduce widows benefits. However, Daley stated that he will go to Springfield after the election to introduce legislation for a two tier system.

I've known Pat Quinn for years. He's honest and sincere, a rarity among politicians. He's said all along hat he will raise taxes. If Brady won, he would raise taxes too. You can't just cut 10% out of every line item in the budget. That's not governing, it's just being a bookkeeper. We need money for our pensions. We need to fix our schools, and we're at the bottom rung of states in school funding. Pat will do a good job if Madigan and Cullerton let him.

Huffington, like any of us here/anyone else in the world, can say/imply that Cohen took votes away from Brady. Unless Cohen voters answer honestly in a poll, there's no real way of knowing who Cohen voters would alternately vote for. If Brady felt Cohen and/or Whitney were threats, he could have them removed from the ballot Madigan style.

Dem's across the nation that supported it were swept out of office. That in itself should tell you how the vast majority of Americans feel about Obama care. And I have yet to meet ANYBODY that is in favor of Obama care. Except for liberal weasels that don't know their ass from the hole in the ground.

At least George Bush's TARP program made money for the government. B Rocks stimulus and bailouts have only lost money. I'd also like the same deal GM (government motors) just got, not having to pay taxes on my income. But That's just payback for unions that vote for the Dems. As for the tax issue. The real question is will they raise taxes. Remember it's the extention of the BUSH tax cuts. But somehow the Dems are going to say they cut taxes for the poor and middle class and call them Obama's, When the truth is they just won't raise them. Instead they will punish people for working and being successful by taxing them more but if the same people loose everything well the gov will just say that's to bad. Remember to work extra hard next year and earn more so B Rock and Pat Quinn can get more tax money to buy their constituents votes in the form of rising entitlements that never get cut.
Government does not have to make a profit much less even work efficiently. All it needs to do is spend your hard earned profit from your labor t keep it's power.

Also if you notice to keep everyone from being shocked by the 2nd half installment this year the firsat half was 55% of last years bill instead of the usual 50%

You can call the county assessor to get your amount due or wait till this Wednesday (Nov 10th) when the bills are mailed.

Sorry, but the assessor only places a value on your house. The treasurer's office gets the numbers from the various taxing bodies and produces the bill which uses the assessed valuation given by the assessor. If the tax rate for a taxing body goes up, that portion of your bill increases and vice versa. If the number you got from the aseesor went down then they reassesed your property and valued it lower. That should help your tax bill, all things being equal.

--11/07/2010 12:51:00 PM

The problem is called "pathological altruism." Altruism -- sacrificing to help one's neighbor -- developed as intraracial cooperation to help maintain a strong and self-supporting group. Altruism becomes maladaptive and destructive when applied to interracial relations between groups competing for limited resources.

Look up John Murray Cuddihy and Kevin MacDonald; they lay it down much better than I can in my brief paraphrasis.

I love the "Little Red Hen" analogy; hadn't thought of it in years. I know a Little Red Hen-gone-crazy, who demonstrates pathological altruism in microcosm; she has Borderline Personality Disorder -- neurosis with a psychotic intensity -- wich makes her like Edith Bunker on speeders, running around in circles fretting and shredding her handkerchief and literally working herself into the hospital giving away money and providing food and all sorts of other services to scum who she hardly knows.

We just had to step in and stop a penitentiary inmate from viciously exploiting this old woman, demanding that more and more packages of luxuries be sent to the prison. The lady's phone number is now blocked, electronically cut off, and the inmate is in seg where she belongs.

11/07/2010 06:01:00 PM"

not exactly, as the initial portion of your comments explained.

as you stated, the total requested amount of tax revenues determines, via some mildly complicated calculations, the tax rate multiplier applied to the individual property owner's property's assessed equalized value, the result of which is the actual dollar amount of the tax bill received.

in any given tax year, if the multiplier is to remain the same, the total amount of requested tax revenue must remain the same and the assessed equalized values of all real property must, in total, remain the same.

for a given percentage of property owners to receive a property tax bill significantly less, without the tax multiplier increasing, not only must their property's equalized assessed value have decreased, but, an adequate percentage of other property owner's property's equalized assessed value must have increased, thus increasing those other property owner's tax bill amounts.

this is one of the inherent elements of our property tax system's basis, using the assessed 'fair market value' of real property, which places the burden of taxation in greater proportion upon those whose efforts increase the value of the results of their labors, and reduces the burden of taxation upon those whose efforts, or lack thereof, result in a decrease of the value of their labor, or lack thereof.

the 'little red hen' is rolling over in her grave.

the solution is obvious:

total voucher system of financing the tax subsidization of public education.

for purposes of tuition, each and every school stands alone.

a set amount voucher, initially based on grade level, is applied to the school of each parent's choice, with each individual school's actual cost of operation determining each individual school's actual total tuition amount.

any shortfall difference between the voucher amount and the chosen school's actual tuition amount is the parent's responsibility, not the taxpayer's.

assuming a given school wants full enrollment, that school will have to compete with all other school's, thus allowing the free market forces of competition to determine the price point.

the elimination of government interference in the free market of education will produce the best educational outcomes for the students and, thus, for our society.

Forget throwing any more money at the schools, in fact, I want all my money back from them, they are doing a piss poor job of educating our youth.... another part of the plan by the leftists, because the only way a democracy can succeed is with an EDUCATED POPULACE, and we sure don't have any of that... and aren't gonna get any from our publicly funded schools.

That same rationale could explain Kirk being elected into office as well. There isnt voter fraud in DuPage,Lake, Will & Kendall Counties?
Oh I see if the Republican Candidate is elected it's the mandate of the electorate. If it's the Dem it's fraudulent. That logic is priceless, ignorant @ it's very core but priceless

Sure there probably is some vote fraud everywhere, but nothing like here in Chicago and Crook Country committed by the Democratic machine. You want to know what is going to be priceless, the expression on your face when your million dollar condo is being looted and set on fire by the rioters after this state is bankrupted by the corruption of the Democratic Party and chaos prevails when those welfare checks stop and link cards don’t work.

What will your logic tell you then you stupid bastard.

Who?...

Who is Bill Brady? What do you have against independent candidates (i.e. Whitney and/or Cohen)?

It's about time to dump all Democrats and all Republicans!

PS I read about the so called Cohen "stealing Brady's protest votes". Unless an honest Cohen voters' (and that's a big if) poll occurs, there is NO way of knowing those voters' alternate choices.

On the parts of the northwest side I frequent, I saw very little outward Brady support (i.e. signs, literature). Even some northwest Republican Committeemen were surprised that I contacted them about Brady.
