Cop Saves Child

  • A quick-acting Chicago police officer revived an unconscious 2-year-old in the Albany Park neighborhood after he spotted the boy's mother calling for help, police said today.

Officer Tom Norberg had just started his shift and was headed east on Montrose Avenue near Kimball Avenue just after 4 p.m. Thursday when a car drove up behind him.

"It was flashing its lights, blowing its horn," he said, "and trying to get my attention in the worst way."

Norberg, a 15-year veteran Chicago officer, slowed his squad car down to allow the other car to pull alongside him. A rear window roll down.

"A woman stuck her head out the window and yelled, 'My baby is not breathing. Help me, Help me,' " he said.
Quick thinking and quick actions prevented a tragedy from occurring, which is half the battle usually. Well done Officer.

Kudos, but how is it that a child is choking to the point of being unconscious, but is saved by cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)?

I don't get it. CPR and choking, one doesn't go with the other, unless they used the Heimlich Maneuver or opened the airway by some other means before doing CPR.

Jeez, when I was in the academy we watched movies during what was supposed to be cpr/first aid. The logic being that we should never put our mouths on anyone. Really ? Not even a kid? My partner? Our my family? Glad I learned it on my own anyhow.

I bet the instruction we were to get from that fat dude JC formerly of SOS, then a merit sgt in 009 and now in some inside cushy spot, probably would not have been that good anyhow. I mean who opts movies as opposed to learning life saving methods? The clouted?

Stories like this one in the papers are what keeps me going daily and makes me beam with pride at being one of Chicago's finest!
I know we haven't had a lot to cheer about here for the past 2+ years, but I really do believe that early next year, positive change is going to come to the CPD.
It won't be quick, but it will be steady. So I ask all of you who feel deflated, hopeless, like one of countless slaves strapped into an oar seat on a slave ship to simply "Strap in and hang on." We eventually WILL MOVE FORWARD. Like any sinking ship, we simply have to toss all the DEAD WEIGHT overboard, and that's going to happen soon enough.

Of course J-Fled will never go on TV praising the officer. He will only go on TV to condem an officer before the investigation begins.

Nice work.So let me get this straight ,the mother looked in your direction and said my baby is not breathing. As u approached she dropped to the ground 1 hispanic baby.PO Norberg then threw his giant piece of gum breaking the babies fall, and eventually revived the lil guy. Probable cause.Transfer to nearest hospital. Just kidding, anyone who knows Tommy knows hes always got like 10 sticks of gum in his mouth, hes a hard worker. like him or not.Good job.

Have had POs push and whine to have themselves put in for life saving awards for some BS incidents, but this one sounds legit. Hopefully he gets one.

and lets give a shout out to another one of our own from 017, Tommy W, who on the day prior to Tommy N saving the child, carried out a wheelchair bound female from a burning building and then proceeded to block traffic...there was no press conference called to commend Tommy W on his heroic actions so I think it is worth mentioning here..good job to both officers

Anyone who saves a child is a hero. For the hero to be a copper on top of that is like icing on the cake. Tom did an awesome job as a human being saving a life and it is just a huge bonus he's a cop.
